Looking at the past year, GOTY had 6 nominees while other categories had 5. This year is so big for games that I wouldn't be surprised if each category would have 6 games this time

So if we would go with 6 nominees, I think these may be the ones:
  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
  • Resident Evil 4 Remake
  • Alan Wake II
  • Baldur's Gate III
  • Spider-Man 2
  • Starfield
I personally wouldn't list Starfield on my own list, but I feel they may add it so each of the platform holders would have their own nominee

As for other predictions, I'm really curious if Hogwarts Legacy will be on some categories. Hoping that it will be nominated at least in art direction, soundtrack or rpg categories. Based on how Golden Joysticks already went, I wouldn't be surprised if Larian will take home a lot of awards on TGA as well

Too bad Avatar wont make it. Do games released in December make it to next year's awards ?

Yeah, each of the games that were released after the cutoff date (second half of November and December) are eligible for next year

It's quite possible that last year's Pentiment may receive some nominations because of this

Baldur's Gate 3, Zelda TotK, Mario Wonder, Spiderman 2. These seem pretty locked.

For the other 2 spots: Alan Wake 2, Resident Evil 4, Street Fighter 6. RE4 is a remake so it lowers its chances and it will be between it and AW2 to take a spot. SF6 has a higher chance to be in than these two but it's also a fighting game so that lowers its appeal sadly.

Honorable mentions Final Fantasy 16 and Hi-Fi-Rush, if the jury feels extra spicy.

Alan Wake 2
Spider-Man 2
Resident Evil 4
Baldur's Gate 3
Super Mario Bros. Wonder
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

If RE4 Remake isn't in then Hogwarts Legacy or FFXVI.
I really can't see something like Starfield to be nominated. The game has like an 83 on Metacritic. Woudn't that be a first? (or at least rare?)

Finally, we will see if its just a popularity/fanboy contest once and for all if Jedi Survivor, RE4 and Starfield are nominated over Lies of P, Alan Wake 2 and Hi-fi Rush.

RE4 is better than Hi-fi fecking rush. Mad to sneak that one in there lol.

But also who gives a shit about awards. When will people realise these are utterly pointless?

Hard disagree. (plus it was in 3rd place, in place of Starfield)

I was just poking fun at the fact that it is just a popularity contest with some marketing and nothing more. Though it came across obvious enough from the tone.

In a year such as this, I don’t see why even consider nominating Spider-Man 2.
In an otherwise starved year it could make sense, but in 2023?

SM Wonder is not getting a nomination IMO. Alan Wake is a bit late, but I don’t know if TGA has a deadline for games to be released to get a nomination.

It’s been a strong year, so whichever game wins GOTY will have deserved it, fanboy tears notwithstanding. Except SM2, but that one really has no chance.

I hope Hi-Fi Rush wins something and Sea of Stars wins nothing, but who am I kidding.

Weird that they announcing nominees today when according to their FAQ, the cutoff date is in 4 days. Right?

WHAT IS THE CUTOFF DATE FOR ELIGIBILITY?
Games eligible for The Game Awards this year must be available for public consumption on or before Friday, November 17, 2023 at 9pm PT. Titles that are released after this date will be eligible for The Game Awards ceremony in 2024. (Similarly, games that were released on or after November 18, 2022 are first eligible for this year’s awards).

Zelda TotK, Spiderman 2, Starfield, RER4, Alan Wake 2 and Baldurs Gate 3.

BG3 will most likely win the goty and the best rpg awards, so I am more interested to see which games will win the best action and the best new IP awards.

For the new IP I hope it's Lies of P.

Also, in the most anticipated game award, I think that FFVII Rebirth might win.

I know people on GAF like to lunge at the 83 console MC, because it's the lowest score. But pc version got a 86 and it's 85 on OC. Death Stranding even won most GOTY awards (118) with a 82 MC (Pc 86, OC 85). Of course 2019 was super weak that such a game could win. Not gonna happen this year, but i don't see why it can't at least get a nomination.

Because there's a lot of others games not so controversial like Starfield. lol

Diablo IV, Street Fighter 6, Final Fantasy XVI, Hifi Rush, etc. All those games deserve more a spot than Starfield.

That's your opinion, i think it's absolutely possible that it gets a nomination. And it will 100% even win some of the other ~600 GOTY awards. People are overestimating the Game Awards anyways. It's just one of many.

This year's GOTY nominee list is so interesting because of how stacked the year is. If you can only put six games on there, a game that would have made the list easily in any other year is going to have to get snubbed.

This is what I would like to see:

Hi-Fi Rush
Cocoon
Armored Core 6
Final Fantasy XVI
Humanity
Alan Wake 2

This is what we're getting:

Starfield
Baldur's Gate 3
Zelda: TotK
Spider-man 2
Resident Evil 4
Alan Wake 2

My predictions, not my personal picks:

BG3
Spider-Man 2
Zelda
Alan Wake 2
FFXVI
Starfield (mercy votes)

Ultimately I think BG3 will win come December.

Edit: don't know if remakes are eligible but if so RE4R should replace Starfield 👌

2023 was amazing. Personally I wouldn’t put Starfield or Spider-Man 2 anywhere near the list, but I bet both make it on there anyway. Will be interesting to see if Mario makes it.

It’s all a formality anyway, BG3 will win.
