Far Cry 5 keyart revealed

I am loving this, and hope it will be the Cover Art as well.

If it strikes a nerve with anyone, think about how other cultures must feel when they're portrayed as the villains and baddies you pump hundreds of thousands of rounds into.

America already fought an actual Civil War once with regards to the divide in mentality between its people, and anyone who for a moment thinks it magically disappeared is insane. We'll end up seeing how they pull this off, as we don't really have any other details, but I for one am interested in having the hornet's nest stirred with regards to this.

It looks like the people in the image might be a combination of:
The Montana Freemen -
The Montana Freemen were an anti-government Christian Patriot movement group based outside the town of Jordan, Montana. The members of the group referred to their land as "Justus Township" and had declared themselves no longer under the authority of any outside government. They became the center of public attention in 1996 when they engaged in a prolonged armed standoff with agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Church Universal and Triumphant -
Church Universal and Triumphant (CUT) is an international New Age religious organization ... The church's headquarters is located near Gardiner, Montana, and the .... A number of church members were kidnapped and subjected to coercive deprogramming attempts by individuals connected with the anti-cult movement.

The cult symbol on the church and on the tablecloth is a play on the Montana State Flag. Putting this above the American Flag would lend credence to the idea they are similar to the Montana Freemen.

There is a tattoo I can't make out beneath the rope on the "sinner"'s right wrist/forearm. The wording on the tattoo on the left arm is cut off "Forever--- Ghost---".

Could have meant taking place after a modern-day civil war between left/right, but I'm not sure.

I would have expected "second Civil War" or "new" or "modern" since post-Civil War America is an actual era, but that is possible.

Do people here the word Montana and think flat corn field landscape?

I also don't get the open world complaint. Do they want Far Cry to be a linear shooter? Is that even a Far Cry game at that point?

Yeah, west Montana is truly one of the most beautiful places in the country.

A religious cult is interesting, but I just hope it doesn't inappropriately associate it's fantasy with a more complex and messy reality and just feed our culture's religious ignorance and illiteracy.

As a Christian myself. This is what I fear.

I sincerely have no problem with a game that focuses on a cult that takes whatever religion it's based off of and twists it to fit it's immoral desires. In fact, as a Christian I wish there was more of this not only in other religions but in my own as well. I am really rough on my "fellow Christians" when it comes to crap like this and I personally judge them harsher than anyone. Stuff like what is portrayed in the artwork here makes my blood boil because I know these people exist. Scum of the earth in my eyes.

However the most important thing is that a clear line of distinction is drawn between the two separating the norm from the extreme in a tactful manner. I believe that people who think like this will use whatever they can, religion or not, to get and do what they desire. People need to see that this part of Christianity is not normal.

Otherwise it just fuels hate in my opinion. I can already kind of see it in this thread.

Think of it this way. Say they where to make a game about extreme Islamists where it brings a lot of the things that happen in the dark to light and encourages you to slaughter them, it would provide more fuel for the far right (or anyone who has an irrational hate for all Arabs, etc) to point their fingers and say see!? If these lines of distinction are left out. My father is the type of person who tends to lump all Arabs in with terrorists. It's disgusting. But at the same time I see more and more lump all Christians, heck republicans even, with people like these extreme cultists(aka terrorists). It's sad because doing this doesn't solve anything. It only pushes backs up against the wall and causes unnecessary drama.

I think a way to draw a line of distinction would be to make the main protag a level headed Christian that would constantly be pointing out the discrepancies in their twisted views compared to what it should be... but then that would be something that I would personally not condone because... mass murder and all... and that's not helping anything to change the views of Christian Crusaders. Perhaps a supporting character then?

So I don't know man. I guess I'll just have to have faith that people won't take it as a blanket statement for all Christians or let it fuel their hate or dislike of them even more. Some of the sentiment in this thread isn't giving me much hope though.

Looks interesting. I'm a sucker for Far Cry gameplay anyway. The combat is just pure fun.

Let's guess the collectables:

-Meth stash
-Dream catchers
-Licence plates
-Bible verses

I'm sure this game wont overstep its boundaries. If this is the first piece of art you release for Far Cry, a franchise formally know for its pour handling of character archetypes, and story telling, you've got a lot to prove. And hopefully they do

Well Damn, I'm game.

Looks like its gonna piss of certain folk, which is a bonus.

I'm assuming they're gonna make the villains colombia-esq. Basically the worst of rural America.

Shooting white supremacists and militant racists seems to be the direction they take I assume.

Kinda sad when people say this looks like Far Cry when Far Cry used to be something different...

It's about exotic/expansive beautiful locations and open ended gameplay approaches. The name originally meant "far cry" from civilization; this seems to be a small country-focused county, so it still meets that definition.

Unless you mean the mutants, if you want to go to its roots- you know, the absolute worst part of the first game.

This is very much Far Cry.

Any good books on this, if you know any?

One of my favorite books for describing the political leanings of rural/white America is "What's the Matter With Kansas?"

I'm on the policy side of the equation and not as much on the national security aspect so I can't recommend a book from that realm.

Good in concept but way too loud. The trailers had a level of subtlety and the charismatic villain would fit so well with this setting, but this gives the feeling of just another Far Cry of the 3/4 variety. Hoping there's a gameplay trailer soon that looks fresh.

Also i have a feeling christianity will be in this game on a much smaller capacity than what it might appear, Ubi dont want to stir the pot THAT much. My guess is that the bad guy considers himself the harbinger of a new religion, so he yanked the pastor out of his church, removed the christian symbols and put his own ones in, which is what that church in the picture suggests (no typical christian cross on the top)

Careful. You stand a good chance of being banned if you go against the grain.

People will care more that it has a bad christian in it then you murdering thousands of people in it.

You murder thousands of people in almost every video game. I'm not sure what argument this could possibly make. The "It's Just a Video Game" argument is silly too in the same way that "It's Just a Movie" arguments are. Media can give us the ability to live experiences and see viewpoints outside our own. It is important that those viewpoints and experiences are accurate so as not to give people poor stereotypes of people and events. That goes for every person, culture, race, and religion. The issue is that many stereotypes ARE accurate, just from a narrow and constricting viewpoint. That's the secret sauce that lets bias flourish - there is just barely enough evidence to form a poor argument for it.

Persecution complex much?

You guys are welcome to discuss what's on your mind instead of those drive-by posts.

Are they though? Despite generally being on the majority of GAF as a far as viewpoint, even I'm aware that this place is a fairly decent echo chamber at times. Edit: Not that I think drive-by posts are the way to go.

Any good books on this, if you know any?

Not the person you were asking, but Terrorism and Homeland Security by Jonathan White was a pretty comprehensive look at terrorism throughout history both internationally and domestically (as a far as America goes). One of the sections specifically covers far right and white supremacy. Be warned though, it is comprehensive and not a particularly "fun" read.

Any good books on this, if you know any?

I don't know of any books, though I'm sure there are more than a few, but PBS's American Experience has pretty great episodes on Ruby Ridge, Waco and the Oklahoma City Bombings that all have pretty good backgrounds and explorations on the Sovereign Citizen movements, White Nationalists and other such movements of the late 80s and 90s.

We need to bring this back.

Hey modern Far cry may be pretty weak and boring but the first game wasn't very good either!

They just went from sniper AI who could smell your sweat in a bush a mile away to braindead AI that let you build a burial mound in a flower patch

Oddly enough I saw the most promise in Far cry 2 which was highly ambitious but straight up annoying to play because of the enemy AI and the systems

Is this a 2017 game?

Don't think they would've riffed on the Last Supper unless they were setting up the bad guy to be a David Koresh-like figure. He's going to be claiming he's the new Yeshua, or I'll eat my hat. Those other changes point toward him being a hyper-fundamentalist ethno-protestant.

I would love to see an American Indian protagonist. It could add a unique perspective, if done well, which is a big if considering the flaming disaster that was the FC3 protagonist and friends.

Indian as in from India or a Native American?

Now I know Ubisoft has a good track record for multicultural protagonists, but regarding this setting and based on leaks them being non-white is unlikely

I fucking love the audacity they have for making a game about right wing radicals of the Waco/Ruby Ridge variety. If done right, this is a great moment in modern politics to tackle this topic.

Please font fuck this up Ubisoft. The idea of treating middle America religious whackos as exotic villains the same way the antagonists of Far Cry 3+4 were is AMAZING.

I don't see why the religious aspect is such a shock or surprise. This is the same company that had you fist fight the damn Pope.

This is a damn cool direction for the series to take, but my view is as a fan of shows like Justified and Longmire, or southern gothic like Frailty. There's a lot of potential here.

....I don't think that's what you want if you are concerned about modern politics. The villains in Far Cry 3 & 4 were fairly charismatic and likeable at times.

I also think he's just scamming people big time, a bit like Hans Gruber

This is most likely the case. His fancy aviators and well done dress-shirt seem to suggest this. I do like the idea of him legitimately believing he is the Messiah come again or something though. Actual insanity is something you don't see much of in games.

The fact that all it took was a single piece of cover art to trigger every single Trump supporter on this board has guaranteed I'll be buying the game.

Well played, Ubisoft.

Marketing doing their job right. They saw that popular vote and knew where they were going to cash in.

I hate this viewpoint from both sides. The Alt-right idiots compound their idiocy by popping a hard-on at every issue that the left dislikes and a larger percentage than I would like of the left returns fire by being just as dumb.

Perhaps he considers christianity too tolerant and liberal and made his new ultra fundamentalist version up. Like, not even Mel Gibson would be allowed in because he spent time with those damn australians. But i dont think we'll see more than just a few hints

Turns out that America was the wildest setting of them all.

Well, Trump's america is quite different than the one you could find 10-15 years ago.

It is right that videogames set in the US reflect this state of things, in some ways.

Videogames have always been a mirror of the times and in this case the game is produced by an European publisher, with an unbiased position.

I don't see why the religious aspect is such a shock or surprise. This is the same company that had you fist fight the damn Pope.

I think it's less the religious and more the ethnic aspect. This year's best selling game had you taking on a South-American based criminal organization that used a perversion of Christianity to validate it's horrible actions, and no one gave a shit about that.

I can't think of any game that tackles Islam in the way this game appears to take on Christianity. Way too much of a controversial topic.

Warning: white-suprematists and alt-right people are NOT christians.

It is not just a naming issue, you can't say "I am chrristian" and then do not follow christian beliefs.

So, why take Christianity into account in this?
