I'm actually impressed that Series X/S sold almost 2 thousand units, not in "hundreds" or "dozens" unlike past few weeks.
Wonder what happened there? It's 3x the sales, even though it's just marginal compared to Switch and PS5 there.

Probably just a bit of stock available. Otherwise I don’t think either of them are readily available.

I’ve been thinking of possibly picking up a secondary XSS (already have XSX), but I haven’t seen any stock available here in JP.

I don't follow these threads every week, but what was the last non-Switch game to chart in the Top 10?
Little Nightmares 2 on PS4 charted at 7th place in week 6. The non-Switch lineup hasn't been great in Q1 but it will get better later on in the year.

Will it get better though? What does Sony have coming that will move the needle in Japan? The new Guilty Gear?

NSW - 89.104
PS5 - 34.657
PS4 - 2.578
XSX/S - 1.929

This has me wondering, if they sold 34,657 PS5s, shouldn't at least one PS5 game be in the top 30? No Demon Souls for your brand new PS5? Are all these PS5 sales just going right up on ebay?

Resident Evil in May is the big one but there are also a few Switch/PS4 multiplats. There's not much for PS5 specifically it's true.

I don't follow these threads every week, but what was the last non-Switch game to chart in the Top 10?

PlayStation Top 5 2021
  1. Little Nightmares II (Bandai Namco) - 24.968 NEW
  2. Disgaea 6 (Nippon Ichi) - 18.289 NEW
  3. Call of Duty: Black Ops - Cold War (Sony) - 16.454
  4. Dragon Quest XI S (Square Enix) - 16.352
  5. Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin (Marvelous) - 16.235
There is basically Nier & Resident Evil: Village as the first non-Switch games that could debut with over 10K joining Disgaea 6 & Little Nightmares
This year we should also start getting used to 30 Switch games in the Top 30, as it will happen a lot, as there isn't much announced on the PS4/PS5 that could chart outside its launch week.

Will it get better though? What does Sony have coming that will move the needle in Japan? The new Guilty Gear?

Outside of Nier & Village, they need to date things like Demon Slayer, Bandai Namco's PlayStation exclusives which are possibly dropping this year, those seem like the biggest games but I don't think they are anywhere near enough to move the needle in Japan.
Especially when there is so much competition on from the Switch - after Rise its Snap, than you go into May you've got Rune Factory 5 & Miitopia into the summer there is SMT V, Stories 2, Baseball Spirits, Shin Kun, Mario Golf, Skyward Sword.

The market conditions aren't the same as the PS3 & PS4 launches, so its a bit interesting to look at the hardware sales and think everything might turn out okay. But than you remember during those launches you also had a PlayStation portable market which now doesn't exist.

Having over 90% of the home market and pretty dominant position in rest of Asia - will have consequences and Baseball Spirits being exclusive to the Switch is the first sign of this. Nintendo at some point won't have to pay for exclusivity AA publishers will do it simply because it makes more financial sense if they get 80% of their WW sales in and around Japan.

Overall we won't know what real demand there is for the PS5 in Japan until the World Wide stock problems subside(which won't happen this year) but at the current moment it's more likely being bought by hardcore fans in Japan using it more like a Pro for their PS4 games, or F2P games like PUBG, Fortnite & Genshin Impact. Also I wouldn't discount people reselling the system overseas not making an impact as well, we know that digital sales in Japan have never taken off like in the West due to a very strong second hand market.

Demon's Souls is being #1 in PS Store Japan since launch.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
At this pace PS5 will overcome PS4 launch aligned in 3 weeks.

The gap is around 80k now I believe.
That's good news, but what about the games?

What the hell are these people doing with their PS5s?

Yep, it's already sold out in many places so retail sales will be somewhere between 1.5 and 2 million depending on how many copies Capcom can ship.

Companies gave their Employees a day off to get it at launch. No wonder about that xD

What do you think the digital split was for the copies of Demon's Souls sold last week?

Very likely that this is going to be the biggest launch of the year, exciting times ahead.

It don’t know but the Pandemic changed buying habits.
Sony said that 51% of all PS4 game sales last year were digital.
PS5 probably has a bigger digital sales ratio and that includes Japan that probably increased a lot the digital ratio.

It is not just Sony... Nintendo digital ratio in Japan increased too.

Oh sure digital is definitely increasing, but I don't think the digital ratio has suddenly jumped so much in Japan that it is now above that of Western countries.

Let's be generous and say that last week 60% of Demon's Souls' sales came digitally. Even then the absolute maximum that PS5's top selling game this week could have sold is 3,075, with weekly hardware sales of over 34,000. So the options are either:
  1. Scalpers are grabbing the hardware the shipping them overseas
  2. Most new PS5 owners are just using the console to play game they already have
  3. Most new PS5 owners are just buying second hand games
  4. Most new PS5 owners are only playing free-to-play games or those given away with PS Plus.
One or more of those must be happening for this to make sense.

Scalpers bought most of those systems is the real answer
I mean..... do you think scalpers are just buying systems and stockpiling them for the apocalypse? The whole point of scalping is flipping it for a quick buck. Scalped systems are going to make their way to end users very quickly, and those users are going to need games to play.

I don’t buy “scalpers” as an explanation for the poor game sales. Makes no sense.
