Elon’s Twitter Carnival of Stupidity (No Politics)

The entire thing is inherently biased, but its still noteworthy and worth reading. The only way it would be non-biased is if all Twitter files were released to multiple newspapers and non-opinion journalists. Instead we have a billionaire and owner of the site personally selecting what he wants to reveal and what he doesn't want to reveal, and it reflects his own self interests. He even required that it be released on Twitter, literally making it a publicity stunt to benefit his site. Its also entirely focused on exposing negative liberal elements, but doesn't reveal any of the Trump requests to Twitter while they were in the white house. It also doesn't reveal anything since Elon has been in charge.

The only way you'll get a full picture is to read through articles explaining what is noteworthy about it. Then read through the stuff criticizing it and pointing out all the huge issues with how its been curated and released and what elements they decided to focus on. Then think about it on your own and decide which parts you find convincing from the two viewpoints.

See the key thing is not to treat any such revelations as fact on their face, but to treat them as allegations. You want to disprove or confirm, have at it. But to just handwave this off as a "nothingburger" is insane.

The canary in the coalmine is that the rest of the media isn't demanding a public investigation into the *alleged* misconduct exposed. That's where you see undeniable proof of how deep the rot has set in. Because that shows obvious partisan hackery as they'd evidently prefer to not upset their friends in the Capitol than demand clarification on matters central to the preservation of democracy.

I see all of this and no one even points back to this:

Because no one was expecting him to simply throw every shit that he finds interesting to see what sticks

It's usually what happens in startups: brainstormings everyday, throwing away projects every 2 days, no sense of direction and etc.

But this is Twitter. It's huge. Every little thing that you are gonna implement has to go through tons of testing before pressing the green button, otherwise it'll be noted by billions of people and shitstorm will ensue, like its happening right now.

The Elon Jet scandal is as corrupt as it gets compared to old twitter.
As I said before, I support Musk in not allowing real time location information on twitter. I'm fine with that. That's not limiting speech in terms of thoughts, beliefs, ideas, values, worldview, options, etc. It's why I'm also fine with not allowing slurs on twitter. But according to Musk's own values, it does make him a hypocrite, and I'm fine with admitting that.

However, "limiting speech in terms of thoughts, beliefs, ideas, values, worldview, options, etc." is MUCH worse than not allowing real time location information. There's no comparison. We can see that Musk uses a private jet too much or criticize his travel plans a day later. There's no value in that being real time, even if I would agree that it was a highly specific personal issue that influenced policy, and it's absolutely right to point out that sort of conflict of interest.

I’m not talking about allowing or not allowing information. That whole chain of events proves that he’s just self serving above anything else. It’s not about free speech. It’s about Elon musk.

The "Twitter Files" thing is an obvious attempt at disinformation. Just read it yourself guys, it's uncomplicated and brief, almost insultingly lazy attempts at deception. This is why no credible news source has even bothered to cover it. I mean, the main proponents literally - literally - suggested that the removal of revenge porn was some kind of assault on the first amendment. It's borderline Qanon level nonsense.

As far as content moderation is concerned prior to the purchase compared to now, Musk is comically censoring people for ideological reasons or personal slights. It's a gigantic running joke in the zeitgeist. Beyond obvious. Old Twitter only banned people if they broke specific rules.

Anyways, I guess Musk is really stepping away, at least superficially. Because he really hasn't put out any considerable info in several days. Which, compared to the prior month, feels like an eternity.

If this graph doesn’t scream scam worth investigating I don’t know what would. Something here seems fucked beyond Elon having a manic episode over assassins being able to magically teleport to his location in real time.

I'm not into Tesla, Space X or any of his stuff. Just kind of passively observed it from a distance. Really only been hearing more details in the last few months so take this all with a grain of salt or whatever.

From what I understand though, they don't have any real proprietary technology that other auto companies can't make better at this point, for cheaper. All the stuff about full self-driving is likely not even close to being done despite multiple claims that it's done. The semi is based on a ton of lies as well about it's ability to haul, it's ability to recharge and the cost of this compared to fuel. I think it was literally hyper-inflated based on nothing but hype and exaggerated promises. It was detached from reality a while ago, and valued something crazy like 10x the value of other car companies that all made way more cars than Tesla ever did. There's a reason that several famous investors were publicly shorting the company for years, including the main guy from The Big Short movie.

The bubble was literally his reputation and his customer allegiance, which was somewhat bipartisan, but mostly left leaning consumers in California and big cities. He fully burst the bubble on his myth of genius-level competence, and shit all over his customer base by being overtly political. His last refuge was fundraising, but he's kind of blown that up as well by lying to investors repeatedly about selling Tesla stock and other things, and blowing up his political connections to public funding.

He still has a last card to play though. Saudi, CCP funding instead, but the Chinese consumer auto market is tanking as well currently. It's just kind of a perfect storm, but I wouldn't be shocked at all to find out there's some kind of fraud as well. So many obvious lies have been called out already.

Tesla and SpaceX basically exist thanks to government endowments and subsidies. Many companies persevere much in the same way, sure, but they tend to operate in good faith. Meanwhile, Musk has been placing his companies in immediate risk to losing those government benefits and/or giveaways, which has to trouble some shareholders.

On a side note, no company has been able to figure out self-driving cars. There's many parties that have been trying for over a decade, using different types of technologies, and none of them have been near successful. So I don't hold it against Tesla that their self-driving tech is just as bad as everyone else's.

True. But I think they've been pretty public in saying it's done, more than once, and then had to walk it back. But like I said, I'm truly not that informed about all this so I'll default to what you guys say on it.

Level 5 autonomy is still decades away, and certainly won’t come with anything like current computing technology.

Feels like there’s a real ‘emperors new clothes’ vibe going on with Musk and Tesla.

I'm not an expert either, but I witnessed the engagements of engineers who do work on it, and read a few articles (🤷‍♂️). What I gathered was that basically no visual (like camera-based tech) or software solution combination has ever been acceptable enough in preventing things like self-driving cars running over child-sized objects, or becoming unacceptably erratic in dim lighting. There's also been some famous examples of the tech causing bad accidents.

This seemed pretty impressive to me.

I have to think that the largest barrier to widespread acceptance of self-driving cars will be anecdotal examples of horrible accidents. Even if the technology reaches a point where it's statistically much safer than human drivers (and it might already be there), the loss of control will be too much for many people. I'd compare it to plane travel in that respect.

Agreed, that's a legitimate take.

The "nothingburger" comment was directed towards elements within the mainstream media who seem completely unfazed by some of the revelations, which is nuts imho regardless of their political affiliation.

My position is simply that I'd like to know more, because in many ways this is an unique opportunity to lift the curtain.

Yeah, agreed. It's not nothing. Still illustrates a bit more detail on how government and tech work together on these things. It's still worth reading, but some of the criticisms of the rollout are also valid.

The average price for a used Tesla in November was $55,754, down 17% from a July peak of $67,297. The overall used car market posted a 4% drop during that period, according to Edmunds data. The used Teslas were in dealer inventory for 50 days on average in November, compared with 38 days for all used cars.

When I get into the market for an EV I highly doubt I’d look at Teslas. I’ve seen too many anecdotes about their build quality, even if I appreciate the strides they’ve made in pushing the EV and self-driving markets forward. I’d much rather stick to Toyota, which isn’t at the bleeding edge of tech ever but basically revolutionized manufacturing quality control and culture and sticks to tried and true tech until the new stuff meets their standards.

The “we’re gonna do a lot of dumb shit and see what sticks” philosophy can work for Twitter but doesn’t really sell me on a $60k vehicle capable of 0-60 in 3s which I’m putting my family in.

Or He knows how stock market basically changes on a whim. He knows that as he soon as he announces he's going back to Tesla, all the investors will go back and stupidly invest in it again. Tesla stock was never worth $700 let alone the $1000 it hit last year. Investors are stupid.

Possibly, and he’s really invested in this “look how many fucks I don’t give” routine. But that’s just so pathetic. Bill Gates is out there dedicating his time to philanthropy these days and banging his secretaries or whatever while Elon is dedicating his time to being an edge lord.

He's clearly shown himself out to be a moron. We have a no politics rule here on gaf, and him politicizing his views is a great reason why that rule is so valuable. His tesla base is mostly environmentalists rich liberal crowd and hes alienating a good portion of them with his ridiculous tweets. The bigger more richer investors have already come out and said that they dont like his online persona so he's losing them too.

This is why CEOs should always keep their mouths shut. No one wants to hear what these people really believe.

Tesla is a little behind Mercedes who is thoroughly testing level 3. I'm not even looking forward to self-driving cars anymore, we'll probably be nicked and dimed on it to the max thus making it not worth it.

Correct, but Elon apparently just can't fake it anymore.

I think ultimately, Elon wants to use Twitter as a socio-political tool for particular political interests. Twitter won't be transforming into the everything APP Elon favored at first, so what's left to do but that. But at least he is being is true 4chan self.

I was shocked to find out that after paying almost $60k on a tesla, my brother was asked to pay a $2k subscription to enable auto driving. I was like wtf is the point of dropping so much money on this thing if it cant do one of the two things you are buying it for.

If BMW is putting heated seats behind a subscription, imagine what they will charge for auto driving.

So the Twitter Files are misinformation, Teslas suck, and Twitter was way better when blue haired college students and the FBI were running it. Got it.

A lot to unpack here.

To start, the "FBI was running Twitter" part is directly stemming from the disinformation that was the "Twitter Files". So, you're perfectly demonstrating how disinfo works: they spread disinfo, you bought into it, and now you're signal boosting the conspiracy theories they are spinning.

Second, Twitter and other large tech companies were not built by, and certainly not run by, "blue haired college students" but rather highly educated engineers and other professionals of all kinds, all ages, from all prior experiences. This is obvious to anyone who gives the matter thought, or bothered to look into it. You can't just boil down tens of thousands of people from all walks of life and nations into some kind of "blue hairs" meme from 2004.

And on that "blue haired college student" thing, that is such a lazy old boomer meme to try to malign anyone who is intellectual or compassionate in any way. Such vast prejudices and mean-spirited attacks on entire "others" needs to die, or at least be regulated to 13 year old edgelord outlets like 4chan.

You really think Elon Musk's twitter won't take advantage of the government program to re-imburse companies for dealing with FBI requests? It's not some secret program.. it's got like, a website and everything lol

We can discuss dismantling the program if it provides no real value, but this weird theory that the FBI of all things is part of some liberal conspiracy is so fucking stupid.

It's true though, there's very little difference between using "blue hair[ed people]" and "boomer" as insults; they're both sweeping generalizations on perceived "others." It's just the same tired generational war stuff that suddenly got big over the past couple years.

Yea, that was inelegant of me. When I used the term "boomer" I wasn't referring to some kind of ageist insult, but rather how the term is often used to refer to dated thinking. But good point, I should stop using it. I just wish there was some better term or phrase that conveys the same.

He's using hyperbole, which you're taking at face value rather than debating the actual merits of the government paying millions of dollars to a company that is actively deciding what truth is, and silencing those who disagree according to the government's wishes. And none of that is a conspiracy. Have you read the twitter files, or are you going with what you read about them?

but rather highly educated engineers and other professionals of all kinds, all ages, from all prior experiences.
Over 99 percent of donations to one political party does not equal a platform created and maintained by "professionals of all kinds, all ages, from all prior experiences." At that point, it's very specific and very intentional.

And on that "blue haired college student" thing, that is such a lazy old boomer meme to try to malign
Agreed. I don't like when people paint those opposed to their worldview as caricatures. Even when there are people like that, you should debate the strongest version of your "opponent," not the weakest and easiest to mock. Always better to steelman than strawman.

I'm gonna need some citations on this "99%" of donations thing before I can respond to it. It's a vast, huge figure and apparently being applied broadly without specifics. I'll just mention that time and time again I see articles detailing how tech execs and CEO types basically donate to anyone and everyone they think can possibly aid them in the future. Which is kind of how things have always been.

And thank you, caricatures was the word I was searching for earlier. I really don't like how our various societies, especially online, boil down each other to them so frequently.

Here is the citation. It's the power aspect that I criticize.

Theres so little specifics provided in these blurbs that they are almost scrutiny proof which I imagine is by design.

Sure it SAYS "98% went to dems on 3 specific years" but we don't know the pool of users, how often donations were made, if these were several of the same people, what dems got votes, what happened other relevant years etc. Theres nothing to extrapolate from this because its as ideologically slanted as they are claiming twitter was, and incredibly vague.

Besides, dem voters dont necessarily equate to "blue hairs" anyway, so that anecdote STILL doesn't apply. Its a generalization designed to paint entire swaths of people under one trendy, clickbaity label and the fact its working on some says it all.

He's citing employee donations here in aggregate. The thing is, most rank and file in almost every field donate to the same group because the majority lean that way. For example: 90% of the donations by employees of Tesla went the same way. Why aren't you raising a fuss about that? And furthermore, why does it even matter?

Unfortunately you're adding to the choir of people boosting misinfo and disinfo that literally stemmed from the topic we're discussing.

Because Tesla isn't taking it upon themselves to decide what truth is, and censoring anyone who disagrees. I don't care who believes what if they're not trying to censor people because of it.

The fact that TSLA stock have dropped so much and they are seemingly having trouble selling Teslas, makes you wonder, were all these people buying Teslas buying it just because they were a fan of Musk's "progressive" values and a form of virtue signaling, rather than due to them being good cars?

It's more that those buyers in the general population who Musk has been railing against in his hero fantasy to save the world from committing suicide due to bad entertainment that don't want to financially support him when there are other options for electric cars as the tech develops. There was branding and prestige which any public figure for a company can tank when they go crazy like Ye and Musk.

These "Twitter Files" show that they removed content by requests from all kinds of parties - government and private. Again, just read them. It's only like 20 - 30 minutes worth of reading material.

Because Tesla isn't taking it upon themselves to decide what truth is, and censoring anyone who disagrees. I don't care who believes what if they're not trying to censor people because of it.

Well, and I am not trying to be flippant, but they certainly are now, via the man that owns them and Twitter. Just keep up with the deluge of embarrassing news and tweets.

Also, do you have an example of how they were attempting to bend the truth before? Blocking things like bigotry or revenge porn or calls to / advocation of violence isn't trying to "change truth" or whatever. It was an attempt to be responsible as a social media platform. Look at them now. The new owner is literally tweeting conspiracy theory stuff and bigotry.

Ya im pretty sure teslas name and reputation was always far more valuable than the actual car specs because a lot of people actually thought this guy was some futurist who would innovate the future far more than he actually can or will do.

Couples this with teslas already high prices, an economy in tatters right now meaning less spending money for everyone, and Elon destroying his own public image makes it easy to see why this is happening.

I dont see teslas going anywhere but the veneer of pristine top of the line leadership at the helm is gone for good.

It was prestige... And one of the first line of premier EV mass produced in America. Had nothing to do with ideology.

According to The New York Times, janitorial and security services at Twitter’s Seattle office have now been cut, and in some cases the remaining employees have resorted to bringing their own toilet paper.

The NYT piece is wild.

That has left the office in disarray. With people packed into more confined spaces, the smell of leftover takeout food and body odor has lingered on the floors, according to four current and former employees. Bathrooms have grown dirty, these people said. And because janitorial services have largely been ended, some workers have resorted to bringing their own rolls of toilet paper from home.
