Elden Rings UK Sales Were 70~85% Digital. PS5 ~50% Digital - Xbox ~85% Digital - Breakdown By Platform Inside

So it's either a difference of 12% if you count PS5 only sales, or 41% if you count PS5+PS4 sales. Not bad, not even a 1.5x difference, let alone the 2-3x difference some people were thinking of.

Too bad that last Uk physical sales topic got nuked, would have been interesting to pick out posts from it.
Wut?

Percentage doesn’t works like normal Add and Minus.

Nice cherry-picking of games that were long time playstation exclusive franchises lol.

Third party game sales generally always sell proportionally to install base of the consoles. There will be exceptions obviously, like the cherry-picked ones you chose, but even those will eventually even out as the franchises release more on both consoles.
Those are just some examples I used. Mass Effect was a long time XBOX exclusive and yet, didn’t the Mass Effect Collection sell much better on PS4 well before it hit Gamepass? Didn’t Hitman 3 also sell much better on PlayStation as well? Dark Alliance sold much better also and I know that’s on Gamepass, but still.

All I was really saying was Elden Ring sales ratio is very good on XBOX considering Japanese games basically always sell significantly better on PlayStation. Can you honestly think of any times when an XBOX third party game sold comparable to the PlayStation version or had a close or better sales percentage ratio, especially a Japanese game?

But we don’t have global copies data.
Ok let’s say it sold 100k unis in UK.

PS: 41k units
Xbox: 29k units

PS sold 12k more units than Xbox… no percentage here.
PS sold 41.3% more units than Xbox… when using percentage.

You can get units and put a % in from and call a day.

Right.

In the event of 100k total sales for everything, each % point is equal to 1k sales. From that total the PS sold 12 points more consoles, or 12k more. It's splitting hairs over the same numbers.

Anything less than a 100% (2:1) difference in favor of PS = Xbox over performing given its install base.

Slightly beat FW on PS consoles and then obviously much better overall. This is just UK numbers. Think it did much better in Japan, 275k vs 91k just on ps consoles.
I see. That’s still very impressive. Obviously Horizon is one of Sony’s biggest franchises , so yeah I’m quite surprised.

12% if you count PS5 only sales vs Xbox sales, not including PS4 sales. I-e 32% vs 29% of total sales.

You add the 9% reported PS4 sales, then you get the 41% which you're using to calculate.

Not too much I didn't want to get too into it because I'm playing HFW at the moment and I didn't want to be jumping between the two or putting one aside midway through to play the other.
But from what I played it just felt like what you expect from a souls game.
Graphically...I can see the improvements but I don't know.
I'm not too impressed by it, rather more disappointed.
The art direction does the heavy lifting here as always.
The exploration is the big game changer, you just pick a spot and go there and there is always a surprise. Play with the time of day too, sometimes events only happen at certain times. I understand the HFW thing, i was going real slow through HFW then the second half i had to spped through to finish in order to play ER. I wish there was like a month between them honestly.

If you took the numbers provided by almost everyone here and applied them in the context given to any potential total sales number, we all would have the same splits. LOL

I believe the generally accepted presentation would be that PS sold 41% more. But that doesn't make the other numbers any less accurate in practice.

Absolutely incorrect.

Even as far back as 2016 digital sales made up almost 80% of video game sales.

That figure includes ALL revenue from digital downloads. Including mobile apps, microtransactions, DLC etc.

I believe the conversation was about digital splits for retail games.

World wide would go for Sony, since they have 10m Playstation console on Japan, and MS has 300k Xbox on japan. And the game is a Japanese game.
Its useless comparison to have. Sony always wins Japanese games comfortably, because of that.

Yeah that’s what I’m saying. Globally the sales split would not be the same as U.K.

I find it strange people here and on trashera are using this 29% as something Japanese developers would use as proof their games will sell on Xbox. their global data would be much more comprehensive than one country.

Globally the split is 2:1. Its not going to have the same numbers. Then you have to account the type of games.
  1. [PS4] Elden Ring (FromSoftware, 02/25/22) – 188,490 (New)
  2. [PS5] Elden Ring (FromSoftware, 02/25/22) – 90,017 (New)
That is more than Xbox series consoles on japan. and this is just week 1. Japanese games would always have numbers like these, which xbox wouldnt be able to get.

Lmao I can just imagine you with your room filled with SNES cartridges and PS 1 -5 discs.

Can’t be me.

I have nearly 500 blurays. If I was to sell each at $5 I would get $2500.

Can’t do that with digital. You can’t do much of anything with digital.

People excited at the increase in digital sales and physical media getting less and less sales is confusing to me. Choice and ownership is always better than a single option. Especially when that single option is more at the mercy of the company.

Not everyone is like you. People dont have big spaces to store these things. Digital is easier. Plus current discs have no value, if the game has digital sales. Ps4/xbox one games are now on ps5/xsx/s. Only games that doesnt have digital, or games from previous console worth the money.

While x360 cost this much

Yeah I wasn’t trying to say the percentage difference would stay the same with PS and Xbox. That’s practically impossible. lol.

Of course physical disc have value. You resell them for money. You own the physical copy. Sell, Borrow, trade. None of this is possible with digital.

You’re examples of value of physical games is not a very good one. Forza is no longer being manufactured for Xbox360. Of course the cost is high compared to Forza Horizon 3 on XB1 which IS still being manufactured. You can still find copies in stores. New and used. That’s how physical copies work. Supply and demand.

Same thing apples to TLOU on PS3. It’s no longer being made. So price goes up.

All you did was show physical media does actually have value.

Thanks!!!!!

It is not he same… 12k more is 41.3% more.

The install base in UK is around 1.4:1 (40% more for PS).
The sales split and userbase split in UK is basically the same.

You guys are spinning numbers that doesn’t exists lol

Lol no, I just think it's very likely they will be all-digital.

Hell by the end generation (2027ish), sales will probably be 95% digital.

It was the so called pandemic that accelerated digital sales increase in the first place.

Who knows once things fully go back to normal if that digital share will slow down.

What I showed you, is that previous gen had value, because you cant get those games easily.
Last gen games are very cheap on current digital market, that physical copy resale value isnt not worth it.
You have resale value for day1 physical games, but you are losing access to those games. You do this, if you dont want to keep those games.
For the people who hoard those physical games, the resale value isnt worth it, as those games are available for cheap in digital format.

It makes sense, to go with digital at this age, since you arent losing your games, and your games is being supported for the next gen. Plus you save space on your home.

The surprising data point for me is that Xbox is apparently eclipsing PC's digital ratio. My latest PC build doesn't even have an optical drive at all, but I always go physical were possible for console games. I guess this really does mean the next Xbox won't ship with a disc drive as standard.

Although most people already knew this, its nice to get some hard data to show Xbox users buy digital way more than PS users (90% for Vanguard too). The 'UK boxed physical sales' threads were beyond cringe and frustrating when people already knew this but pretended they didnt so they could console war.

Most people in the UK Boxed physical sales threads are just happy to have any data. Only you guys want those threads locked and stopped.

I doubt it. Music and movies have gone virtually all digital, and ultimately digital is more convenient (plus people are lazy).

Physical media is dying, soon it'll be dead.

Its because tons of pc users are blocked from owning this game.
The minimum requirement this game on pc, kills alot of users. I cant buy it for my pc, since my gpu doesnt meet the requirements.

Given this number, I'd say the game did better than expected on Playstation considering it came out one week after Horizon FW and one week before GT7. Those two first party games are MONSTERS!

I don't know, did the Mass Effect Collection sell better than the install base ratio says it should? What were the install bases and what was the sales split? Also a collection of old games would need to likely take into account some sort of factor of how the originals sold on each console. For example if the original Mass Effect games sold 30% better on Xbox 360 than on PS3, will the fact that more Xbox owners likely have the games already mean that less will buy the collection? I'm not pretending to know if it would make any difference, but it is another variable that would need to be taken into account.

As for your last sentence - can you name times when it wasn't a split comparable to the console install base?

I have nearly 500 blurays. If I was to sell each at $5 I would get $2500.

On the bolded - is there actually anyone that's cheering going "yewwww I can't wait til physical sales are gone!"? I'm 100% digital, have been since like 2010, yet I wouldn't for one second want physical games to go away. I don't think I've seen anyone wishing they would either?

On your whole blu-ray physical vs digital thing - with digital you have access to your entire library at the touch of a button. Can't do that with physical. I have a 40TB NAS filled to the brim with digital media, all available on Plex anywhere I am in the world, and shared with my friends and family. Can't do that with physical. Both physical and digital have their benefits and their drawbacks, it's just that in this day and age the benefits of digital are starting to far outweigh the drawbacks. I have like 4000 movies (all legit, of course) taking up a 20cm x 20cm x 25cm place on my desk. I can pick my entire collection up and take them with me in one hand if I wanted to go to a friends house. You can't do that with physical, even with 1/8th of the amount of movies that I have.

Doubtful. System requirements in isolation aren't really enough to push the Xbox's digital ratio from PlayStation's digital ratio of 50% to over the PC's digital ratio, all the way up to 85%. More likely, Xbox owners on average prefer digital downloads. I'm in the minority, preferring physical games, but it's hard to deny what we're seeing.

Its system requirements. No way both systems can beat pc on digital format, if they are selling physical copies. PC is all digital. Only other explanation would be, low pc users in UK.

Repeating empty statements doesn't make them any less likely to be wrong. I've explained my position. You'll need to explain your fairly ludicrous position if you plan on repeating yourself for a third time.

I think kingfey kingfey is saying that the Xbox having a supposedly higher percentage of digital sales than the PC did can't be right purely because there is apparently no way to buy Elden Ring for PC physically. This was the line in the OP I believe that is the culprit:

Almost 85% of Elden Ring sales on Xbox were downloaded, and on PC it was 73%
How can only 73% of PC Elden Ring sales be digital when it supposedly only released digitally?

If however it did get a PC physical release then yeh you're right.
