I wonder if its next gen only
Almost no chance. Games released in late 2020/2021 will mostly all be cross-generation. Think about it this way -- Cross Generational release: Audience 150 MILLION (PS4 107M + Xbox One 43 M to date) potential buyers (and that's not including whatever next gen sales are), as opposed to, maybe, 15 million potential buyers (let's say for the sake of this example that PS5 and XSX have each sold 7.5 million by the time Elden Ring releases) if it's "Next-gen only" by the time it releases. Do you see by simple math, why almost no third-party games will be "next-gen" exclusive for awhile?

The only time in the first few years we're going to see next-generation exclusivity will be Sony to promote their walled-garden/gamer mindshare approach, and potentially a few PC outliers. Everything else will be cross-generation. It's financial suicide otherwise.

Same, Sekiro was soooo good for me, it rivals Bloodborne as my favourite FROM game.
I beat and enjoyed Sekiro but I prefer Bloodborne, Ds and DS 1. After I beat Sekiro just didnt feel the urge to replay it as opposed to the hundreds of hours I spent on the before mentioned.

Hope Elden Ring is special, I'm sure it will be.

I've lived in and out of the highlands for some time and I can see how some of the areas would make for great soulsborne locals. Can be very atmospheric around dawn just when the sun begins to set. Lots of old ruins too.

I replayed Sekiro many times and eventually got platinum for it because I was addicted to its combat system.

I'm in a funny situation, I didn't like ANY Fromsoft game before Sekiro and yes, I tried them all starting with Demon's Souls. Now don't get me wrong I acknowledge they're good games they just didn't click with me. Then Sekiro came out. You'd think it was not such a smart decision buying that one on release but I was bored so I gave Fromsoft another shot. And boy was that the right thing to do because Sekiro blew me away so hard I forgot about the concept of time. Now I really hope that Elden Ring is more of a Sekiro situation for me, rather than a Dark Souls situation...

You know, funnily enough, Nioh didn't click with me either but I adore Nioh 2. Weird stuff with my enjoyment lmao.

Elden Ring day 1 in any case. Need to experience it myself.

wow, oddly enough... having beaten all Miyazaki games many times except Demon Souls and with Sekiro being my personal GOTY 2019, I dropped Nioh at the second boss and still never touched Nioh 2.
Can't really put my finger on it why, I think it has something to do with having way too much random loot trash to manage, I just don't like it. I thought I'm just being weird, maybe I am. Dope games and I totally see the appeal, somehow just not for me. Maybe I'll rediscover them one day.

Ok, back to getting hollowed waiting for Elden Ring news then.

Nioh was my most played game in 2019 according to Sony, with over 240 hrs of actual game time. Haven't played NIoh 2, but am looking forward to it.

I also wanted to rebut the commenter above by stating that Nioh's loot was meaningful, and not trash at all, and that was what made Nioh my favorite 2019 game.

If you liked Nioh you'll love Nioh 2. It is basically improving every single aspect of the original. Burst counters are cool and so are most bosses.
What I noticed is if you do all side content and never lose any Amrita because you don't have brain damage you'll certainly be OP by the end of the game.
Also want an easy experience? Just play with an Odachi on your first playthrough. The range and damage is great. And you can unga bunga enemies tbh.

Sorry to disappoint you, but Elden Ring gameplay is expanded DS3 (stats, leveling) . Magic is confirmed, as is Dark Souls style PvP/co-op. Combat might have some Sekiro inspirations but the base is DS3.

Thank god. I'm on the flip side. I greatly prefer the build variety and gameplay of Dark Souls. I liked Sekiro, but the whole feudal japan thing just doesn't work for me. I'm burned out on it (which sucks since we've got GoT coming).

I may have to give Nioh 2 a try though. I'm trying to force my way through the first but not really enjoying it. I assumed 2 was more of the same so I already wrote it off.

I really hope it will be all about the build variety and choice, which then will let you focus on different defence mechanics.
I hope one of them will be an evolution of the parry/deflect, which you can go full dex with and prioritise aggressive dps focused gameplay.
But if you wish to build a Haveltank instead and poise through behind a massive shield with a greatsword that hits like a truck - I'd love to see an evolution of that as well.
Also a deep spell-casting system with different branches you can specialise in, so you can make different kinds of powerful sorcerers that require different strats

I hear that for sure between Nioh last year and Sekiro this year for me. I'm good for a while. Not sure I can do Ghost of Tsushima even if it's amazing and I'm skipping Nioh 2 for even longer.

Sekiro is much more of an action game than the rest of the souls series. It's pretty different from their other games so it's not surprising to like one and not the other.

It is just a different twist of the Soulsborne formula focusing more on action. Core gameplay mechanics and loop are the same.

Core gameplay mechanics

-Death has virtually 0 consequences.
-No stamina
-Exploration is almost irrelevant
-Not an rpg
-Combat is completly different.

It's closer to something like God of War than Dark Souls. It's an action game. The things that differentiate the souls series from other action games aren't present here.

I could still end up loving it, I did play 60% through both DS3 and BB and I did have some fun, everything can happen at this point...
Oh yeah one of the reason I liked Sekiro more is that it has way less jank than the others and is imho more responsive, Elden Ring could be like that too.

It has exactly the same gameplay loop as every other Soulsborne. Try harder.

It doesn't have the same gameplay loop friend, not even particularly close.
Does GoW have the same core gameplay loop? Star wars?
🤣👌
Try harder.
The core gameplay loop is identical in all of Fromsofts Soulsborne games.
Find bonfire, defeat boss/die, rinse & repeat.
The only difference between all is twists to combat, character progression and obviously multiplayer with Sekiro.

The differences in combat and character progression, which you even mentioned, are big enough to radically alter the experience. Exploration is also done differently. From a distance, yeah, the core loop is still the same. But the moment to moment gameplay is a significant departure.

I could boil down several games to "find checkpoints and fight bosses". Do you really think that's what makes Dark Souls, well, Dark souls.

Nioh is closer to Dark Souls than Sekiro is.
