Demon's Souls screens

I was going to say, Oblivion meets 10 fps...
Game needs a ton of polish, those fighting mechanics aren't looking too hot either.

I love the fight between the girl with the dagger and the guys with swords, where she is engaging them agresively...this shouldnt be done...not in that way, ever

Improve the animation drastically and give some heft to the weapons and impact and its doable. The frame rate was not too bad, just poor animation i think. Take a note from Uncharted into making it smooth, or just make it first person like Oblivion.

The environment and models look good though...

it looks pretty awkward right now - particularly with lining up attacks (...air sword...). i miss the first person view already.

Not sure why people say the combat looks funny...

Yea its early, but I wouldn't expect too much drastic changes here.
It looks almost exactly what King's Field would look like in third person!

If you're expecting Devil May Cry combat speed here best look somewhere else.
Combat is stiff... you get one swinging animation! And you have to wait for your little green fatigue bar to fill up before you can swing again!

Each weapon's weight effects how often that happens though.
Combat is more about strategy than hack n slash here. It's all about angles and positioning and higher ground and speed etc, combined with timing with magic blasts.

I think it looks great, but would be SO MUCH better First Person.

Depends, but yeah, that would have definitely helped in its current state. The game could go either way at this point... Some things looks promising, other things look way early.

sure, except it has standard analog stick third-person controls, which makes lining up a swing far more difficult than it would be in first person (or in third person with tank controls, frankly (and no - i'm not suggesting that would be a good idea)).

adding a lock on would probably remove one of the primary challenges in the combat as things are currently set up.

The fact that they're From. Have you played any of their games? Were you around for other From announcements, like the Armored Core 4 reveal, where people unfamiliar with From got similarly hyped? This is going to be the same deal. The game will come out, get terrible reviews, and no one will buy it but From fans.

I dunno about this third person stuff. Doesn't look nearly as depressing as King's Field!

Usually From Software games have good gameplay with themes that I like. They don't really innovate or blow you off but they have that something special and the right gameplay. I loved Lost Kingdom 1&2, Enchanted Arms, Otogi 1 and 2 and some Tenchu games. I can understand that their games are not for everyone.

Demons Soul's video looks graphically good, but need some more polish. It is still early anyway.

I'm not sure I want one. I know positioning would be more difficult, but I think I want that. Makes attacks more tactical and less button mashy.

But maybe I can't have it all :(

Getting to play Demon’s Souls was a journey. First you have to show your ID with a passport or other valid identification to certify you’re over 18 years old. Then you walk through a small hallway with trailers of Sony’s 18+ PlayStation games like Resistance 2 and Resident Evil 5 to get behind the booth and pick a single 18+ PS3 demo to play. Since I was there during the media days the wait wasn’t that long, but you have to run through the gauntlet for each game. So, while there was a long queue for Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 I was the *only* person waiting to play Demon Soul’s then.

From Software started their Tokyo Game Show demo with a story, complete with English voiceovers, explaining demons are claiming and enslaving the souls of men. You’re the only one who can save them. A generic set up for what ended up being a twelve minute slashfest.

Well, Demon’s Souls could have been different since there are a handful of character classes you can pick from. There was a light armored warrior, a knightly fellow, an archer, but I picked a muscular character with a humongous Zweihänder. You get a chance to customize your character too with a decent character creator. I changed my facial structure, but I didn’t spend too much time with it since the clock was ticking.

OK, into the castle. An onslaught of mind corrupted humans tried to attack me, but they were no match for my giant blade. Nearly every enemy died from one hit. The downside is my barbarian-like character was swung slowly. This wasn’t a problem since the sword was so gigantic I could sweep the screen hit and kill multiple enemies with a single swing. Similar to King’s Field a power meter charged up. If you wait for a few seconds you should be able to deal more damage, but with my mammoth blade this was completely unnecessary. Archers were the only threat, but these were dealt with by simply walking up and stabbing them. I had a few items with me like a firebomb, healing potions, and picked up a few more from glowing bodies, but all I needed in the demo was my sword.

Also like King’s Field you aren’t really given a goal. I spent my time wandering around the castle trying to figure out where to go just killing things as they came to me. This probably wasn’t the best way to show Demon’s Souls. I ended the demo feeling confused since I didn’t have enough time to explore the atmospheric castle.

The other mystery is why Demon’s Souls was thrown into the 18+ section. I see the plot is dark, but Demon’s Souls doesn’t have any gore. No chopped off limbs or anything like that. The only questionable material is rag doll physics for the fallen bodies which is somewhat of an issue in Japan. If Demon’s Souls sees an American release I imagine it will get a T rating, but I’m not convinced Sony will publish Demon’s Souls in other regions. Demon’s Souls’ is an abstract game rooted in slow exploration, totally unlike action RPGs with stories to push players along and exciting quick time events.

I am legitimately as excited for this game as I am for a bunch of triple A shit.

Everyone please post that is a KINGS FIELD fan so I can add you to my PSN list of

I think I love you

Oh yes. It's actually kind of strange that for how much I love King's Field, I've only played US King's Field and maybe half of King's Field II (Jpn's II and III, respectively)...and a bit of Shadow Tower. It's time I bust those out.

I own the PS2 King's Field but have never put it in, is it good?

Last but not least, this game looks wrong in all the right ways. Aside from the slowdowns that I'd like to see cleaned up (yes, I know the old games had them), the video of this looked great to me.

EDIT: You know, I'm surprised and very glad to see so much King's Field love in this thread--I've participated in King's Field love-fest threads before, but they seemed more desolate, and I certainly don't remember seeing people like drohne and Dragona in there.

I got to play it at TGS, and it does have a lock on function. All you have to do is tap R3, and wolla.

My overall impressions of this game are positive. I thought the graphics looked great, except for the occaisonal loading problem or framerate hickup. The game is still very early, so I think it will be ironed out by then. The class I played was the dude with the gigantic sword and sheild. Combat was slow, but I was absolutely destroying foes with a giant sweeping slash. BudokaiMR2 played as the theif/assasin whatever, and was slicing and dicing people up good. It looked more fun, but also more difficult than the class I played. I didn't really notice the music very much because it was loud as fuck at TGS. I'm defintiely putting this on my must-buy list.

This is just what I want to hear. I don't want to read too much into the impressions, but this describes what I like about King's Field.

One of my favorite series of all-time. I've been calling the series underrated since the first one hit our shores.

People comparing this game to non-From games implies they have never played a From Software game before, but are interested in this one. Castigate not those seeing the light for the first time.

:p

I actually didn't mention it because its a From Software series as much as how much King's Field pre-dates Oblivion. Its more of a 'know your roots, bitch' sort of thing ;)

We played this at TGS and it was pretty fun. There really wasn't anything amazing about it but it was definitely fun. I played the assassin class so I just ran around stabbing guys in the back for stealth kills.

As long as the framerate is cleared up and the story/setting look interesting enough I will probably pick it up.

Sorry to go all "fact check" on you, but Elder Scrolls: Arena came out in March of 1994, and "King's Field Japan" (the first King's Field that was never released in the US) came out in December of 1994. I would personally say that both series have their roots in other, earlier games...but since Elder Scrolls didn't come to consoles until the third entry (Morrowind) I could see how others would view it your way.

I'll take the King's Field series over the Elder Scrolls series though. They're not better on technical merits but the style of play is unique and totally great in my opinion.

Is the comparison to Oblivion really valid?
I loved Oblivion (Shivering Isles especially), and it might have just been my favorite game of this gen...Don't hurt me, and yes I've played Morrowind.

Damn, that was quick. Seems like Yoshida's started cracking the whip at SCEJ. Hope they can fix the framerate issues that were present in the TGS demo.

Yep, sure seems that way. About time too! Q1 is shaping up quite nicely.

Indeed. WKC+Demon's Soul+SF4+Resident Evil 5+FFXIII demo all within a period of 3 months should do good things for PS3 in Japan.

this must be the only jrpg which seems almost completely seemless...I know IU was supposed to be to some extent, but this seems even more so in that vid

Wow, that is about half a year earlier than I expected. Hopefully the quality doesn't suffer.

Hopefully he'll quickly realise that's not the way to make a great game.

There's Network tab. What does it say? Online play? ;O

If my Japanese serves me right, it's a new sort of co-op called "Soul network" When you die in the game (offline), you became a soul and can sign to Soul network. As a soul, you are summoned to aid other players on their adventure. The other one being still alive.

Very interesting. I assume once dead they can at least come back alive? ;D

I took another look and just saw there's another page :P

About death, when you become a soul, there will be blood left to the place that you died. I'm not sure what happens with the blood, but it seems to make you stronger if you find your blood. There's also many blood scattered that have no use, so it's not going to be an easy job. I didn't see anything mentioned about being revived again.

*Take this reply with a grain of salt, because I'm really not sure*

Ps. and it's Soul sign and not network, sorry about that.

this look to old school or too hardcore for me. I think I'll try to rent it. I may have some fun but I usually never play game without story long enough to beat them.

about the new youtube video, I have a feeling I'm going to hate the camera, or maybe that's just the person playing it sucks managing the camera that give the impression.

is there any co-op here? I think this slow paced, sparse story, no cutscene kind of game will really benefit from having co-op to break the tedious nature of the game.

well still, the idea of it is interesting. but is the game really coming out in Feb. 2009? Man that's way quick! But at least we know there's going to be more information coming in for the next 2 or so months!

Yes, the site has the date on 5th February too. It sounds way too early, but don't forget that they have been working on it for more than 3 years. It's just us know about it close to release.

And I took another look at the site, and tried to look at the text even harder :lol It seems the other player can find your blood, and you will be revived again that way. Together the players will be stronger and defeat harder enemies.

God, I need to get a pair of glasses sometime :( (It's a pun, I don't wear glasses)

So this post is what we know so far from Demon's Souls online co-op and is corrected (in order not to confuse others even more):

it's a new sort of co-op called "Soul sign" When you die in the game (offline), you became a soul and can sign online. As a soul, you are summoned to aid other players on their adventure. The other one being still alive.

About death, when you become a soul, there will be blood left to the place that you died.

The game will be released on 5 February next year in Japan.

There's no mention of voice chat? Japan devs surely don't like putting those features in the game.

Does it mention if I'm relocated to random players or allow me to find my friends off PSN list?

what if say i died, go visit a friend, they die, do i leave or do i hang out with him even after death? ;o

no mention of what skills/power/attack the souls have [or is it basically the same as if i was alive?]

LOL. you don't have to answer these. ;P
