COMICS! |OT| March 2015. Warning: can be hazardous to your financial health.

Fuck, I'm gonna miss out on Howard the Duck.

Watched Big Hero 6, mostly good movie but
killing people's family members for drama is getting excessive, first you start him with his parents already having died while he was 3 and then you kill his brother in the first fifteen minutes. Also, baymax staying behind in the portal was a given, and a lot of the drama felt very overbearing and forced
I will give it a generous random 7/10 mostly for Baymax cuteness.

Yeah, I gotta give it that rating, too. Baymax was great, and the Disney animation was great as always, but everything else was just good enough. Not great, just good enough for me to not take issue with anything except the ending.

I'm the best character in this thread. I'm better than the Monkey and the Birdie.

Seriously, first time making the top ten in any OT.

Damn have you guys seen how much a first print copy of Edge of Spider Verse is going for? :O

Bahaha I can finally retire!

yeah you should sell that shit

meanwhile, I've had a long hard chat with myself and I think I'm probably not going to buy a ~£200 tablet just for the sake of reading comic books

feels good to be sensible

I just wanted to thank the tumblr minions for inflating the price of a comic book. Please continue to obsess over weird shit so I can continue to make money.

Kipp

but I am taking tiny steps forward
Wait, what!? But that comic just came out! And it's not like it was some super obscure, low-print comic or something. It was a big Spider-Man event.
That's just nuts.

Also, Miami Vice Remix looks kind of awesome. If the interiors look anything like that cover, I want to read that badly.

Are people actually buying it at those prices? That's crazy. I've got all the 1st print runs of Edge of Spider-Verse. It was the only book I was still buying in print. I'm guessing I should sell this off now, yeah?

Speaking of Spider-Gwen, I really liked the first issue! I've never really gotten into the Ultimate Universe, or really any other "alternate universe" for Marvel so seeing all those characters with a different spin was really fun for me.

I also just read Ant-Man issue 2, and man that comic is just really good. I bought Superior Foes on CMX during that Marvel sale and I'm pretty excited to get in there and read that series. I read the first 7 or 8 issues on MU and really liked it. I'm glad to see Ant-Man is following in its footsteps.

Green Lantern Alexandra DeWitt could be the next big dead person as the hero they were attached to.

Mark my words.

Edit: Shit. Already happened.

Just read Nemesis from start to finish in about 30 minutes or so. Fun book with beautiful art from Steve McNivens. I forgot who recommended it but thanks for the suggestion! Now let's see what they do with the movie. I wonder if they'll stick with the
Pregnant By Gay Brother
plot or change it entirely? I'm assuming they'll make some big changes to that.

This book was basically Saw/Hostel + Batman, and I suggest that those of you who may enjoy weird shit like that to give it a go.

Edit:

Mark Millar is definitely an interesting case, because he's the living version of Radiohead's "Anyone Can Play Guitar" but in this case, the guitar is writing comics. His writing is fairly weak, but he generally has a compelling hook and understanding of the summer blockbuster set piece, and he ties it together with awesome artists who tell the real story. Just get out there and write, people. Anyone can be Millar with the right idea.

Silk comes across as perhaps a little too Mary Sue and attached to Peter at the hip whereas Gwen is basically her own thing independent of that. Really though, Silks outfit is some animu ninja shit and Gwen's is actually neat. Also, let's be honest, the tumblr crowds behind this stuff care 95% about looks and cosplay potential versus actual content.

Uncanny Avengers does a pretty good job of showing that Remender fares far better as a dialogue writer than as a narrator.

"The undulating buzz in his ears drops off, revealing screams and explosions. His eyes open by sheer will... ... the image of his mother replaced by a similarly petrifying scenario."

Dude.

Silk comes across as perhaps a little too Mary Sue
Understatement of the year.

Speaking of, man, I just reread Red Son. That book is dumb as hell, and there's no real characterization going on via the writing--it's all pretty standard and...just there--but there's some solid integration of a ton of DCU elements and the ending is clever, despite being super negative, as with much of Millar's work. It's really odd that he was kind of/sort of Morrison's protege when he started out considering his comics are on the complete opposite side of the comics spectrum, being big, dumb, mean-spirited, and generally awful.

What's funny is that this isn't you or anyone being insensitive or a dick. It's true. Cosplay potential, sex shit, body image shit, "hip" songs, corny ass one liners, and colorful pictures are all that they're looking for.

Imagine if Kamala Khan said "The difference between guys and girls? Girls kick butt!" And her leg stretches out and physically kicks a bad guy in the butt...it would blow up tumblr. They are the corniest fuckers on the internet.

I wonder if he's actually being mean spirited, or if he believes that he's just pushing the envelope but the reality of it is that his writing is so average he can't get the true message across.

I "get" what he was trying to say about Christianity and politics in Nemesis, but he just lacks the nuance of better writers that could paint a better picture of whatever the moral of their story is.

Why isn't that a print yet?

Ed, get on this.

I don't even care about Ms. Marvel and I'd buy this. I'm a sucker for one liners.

If you ever get famous I'm taking all this shit to TMZ. I'm riding your coattails to financial security one way or another.

Everybody needs an entourage.

I'm going to power through Superior next. This one looks like it could go either way. It's either going to be a sweet book with some sort of moral about responsibility, or it's going to get weird and this Little-Boy-Turned-Hero is going to be like Shazam who uses his powers to get boned by women. I think this book is gonna get weird real fast.

Appropriate for Sundays:

I'm going through Year One again, and this is still one of my favorite moments. Gordon, just after being jumped by a group of GCPD co-workers/goons, confronting their leader, and his "partner", Flass. There's nothing faux-badass about the scene--it's simple and shiver-inducing and Flass will end up fucked up and naked.

Nope, Superior is actually very touching and sweet as of issue 3. Millar can be great as long as he works within the confines of whatever demo his book is aimed at. He only starts getting vile when he's writing his "Mature Readers" books.

Is the absolute edition a good place to start?

Johns' Omnibus, if that's what you are referring to, is a great place to start. There are also Absolute editions but they cost more and collect less.

I picked up X-Men: Supernovas because I had seen someone mention that Mike Carey was great at writing X-men. I stopped reading the books regularly except for Peter David's X-Factor in the mid 2000s after losing interest after Chuck Austen/Greg Land took over. I saw from a couple websites that Carey wrote the X-men for quite a long time. Is it worth getting the rest of the run if I enjoyed Supernovas? Are there any other authors/runs from around 2007 til present that I really need to check out? I've heard Matt Fraction's run was pretty fun but others said to skip it.

I've read Jason Aaron's Wolverine stuff in the Wolverine Omnibus and the Wolverine and the X-Men omnibus and like both of those. I don't remember enjoying the Brubaker stuff with Emperor Vulcan a ton. And I've caught up with the current series from the Gillen X-Men books forward to current issues. Honestly, I haven't been a huge fan of the current stuff and just burned though it to catch up to where things are now. The Bendis books in particular haven't really clicked overall which has disappointed me because I generally like his Ultimate Spiderman and Powers. There are a few moments in there that I really enjoyed though.

The Geoff Johns Omnibus is probably better than the Absolutes since you are starting out. The omnibus will have more stuff in it. I have found absolute collections are better for stories you have already read and particularly resonated with you. The format is great but the premium price isn't worth it when you are just looking to explore.

You know, there are enough of us here to artificially inflate the price of books we all enjoy.

Which book should we make a "thing?"

It lost Doctor Who to my surprise.

The Titan license is better because I can actually buy the physical trades in a shop now as opposed to having to go to an online comic store every time. Doctor Who Magazine has had the comics license in the UK for years so they blocked sales of the IDW stuff. I eventually had to wait for the Humble Bundle, and I had to import the Star Trek TNG crossover.

Also, they're doing UK reprints like the Marvel and DC reprints (Titan has the DC license here). Picked up #1 earlier this week which had the first issues of the Ten, Eleven and Twelve series. I hope they reprint Nine, really looking forward to that mini.
