Circana (NPD) November 2023: #1 COD MWIII #2 Spider-Man 2 #3 Hogwarts Legacy; PS5 #1 Units + Revenue, XBS #2 Units + Revenue

Honestly wondering how many people bought the Portal without owning a PS5. Which says a lot about how people would take a full Sony handheld now compared to the PSP and PSV.

That said, I know CoD III was going to do good but does that set a bad precedent for CoD? All I hear is how lazy this one was made but it's sold so well it made 2nd best selling game of the year in it's debut month.

Surprising that the ps5 would be down > 20% in units. How is that even possible with the price cuts. I would say that's very bad.
Why do you think XSX is $350 on target today?

They are both scrambling because their expensive fucking consoles are not flying off the shelves like they did last year. They need to get down to $300 asap but they are both releasing $500 slim versions thinking that covid demand is still there. its not.

I was on bestbuy on blackfriday doing some last minute shopping and immediately noticed that while the $399-449 skus were sold out, the $500 cod and spiderman bundles were still available. after the entire day of black friday sales. sony is at 40-45 million already. they are not gonna sell to those casuals at $500 a pop no matter how many games they bundle. I think it will need to be $350 minimum like the xsx today and then $300 by holiday next year.

20% decline in the 3rd official year and 4th holiday is not good. This is the year they peak, not last year. They have at least 4 more holiday seasons to go. a 20% decline each year going forward is going to be a disaster.

Man, its weird seeing the #3 best selling game be blank for November.

/s

But seriously, I know a lot of people who just picked it up cause of the sales. Should have been nominated for something at TGA. I loved the game, but can see why people thought it was a chore.

Revelio!
Quite seriously, I was watching my 11 year old play it in the car on my Switch, and it seemed like revelio was uttered 10 times in six minutes of play. 😆

Hogwarts Legacy ranked 3rd in November full game dollar sales, driven by the launch of the Nintendo Switch version of the game. Hogwarts Legacy ranked as the #2 best-selling title on Nintendo Switch during November. Hogwarts Legacy remains the best-selling game of 2023 YTD.

Next year's CoD has the longest dev cycle in recent CoD history with Treyarch developing it, his year's CoD was hastily put together because Activision originally wanted to take the year off but likely pressured by their investors to have a full priced retail release.

Shit sux, but at least we can safely say next year won't be a repeat of this year.

Call of Duty was always going to top the charts but we don't know if it sold withing expectations or not in the US.

In the UK it declined by 38% which is a sharp decline. That's very bad to have a series decline, regardless of it topping the charts.

Just like how the PS5 sales were down 20% YoY even though it's number 1 in units and dollar sales.

The most important metric is growth or decline, regardless of chart placements. Both of them were always going to be number one in sales.

PS5 is super expensive where I live, close to 700 dollars and that's for a fucking slim edition. Inflation sucks ass but Sony thinking they are a premium brand nickeling and diming at every opportunity is even worse.
I'm not sure I follow. What does this have to with Circana?

It has nothing to do with Circana. I just wanted to point out what a greedy company Sony has become and I hope this decision reflects on their future console sales.
What decision? Your perception of them nickel & diming a region?

Okay.

Yeah, as rough as the console percentages are, that really stands out to me. Starfield should have been an easy holiday win for Xbox as a platform (not necessarily pushing it over PlayStation, but certainly a notable mover). It has essentially flopped in that regard. But, hey, if it made them money, it wasn't a total bomb!

Hardware sales being down double digits means they need a bigger price cut ASAP. The consoles were bundled to hell and back but most people who would spend $500 on a console already have one.

Time for a permanent price cut to $349 or risk a stagnating player base.
This is what price cuts look like. Hardware spending is down, and that's because of all the discounts and price cuts. That doesn't mean they are selling fewer units. Definitely doesn't mean the player base is stagnating.

Seems like console adoption took a hit in November yoy.

We will see how 23’ compares with 22’ overall for each console.

It was always going to be hard to compete with November 2022.

This was the first time a lot of people who wanted a PS5 could get a PS5 for the holidays. This is why the sales stretched out into Q1.

It's always why I warned people that the 25 million was unrealistic.

And it's also why Sony is doing heavy discounting.

Raising prices on hardware, services and accessories but they don't improve on it. Slim edition is a downgrade, you don't even get a stand, you need to shell out another 30 bucks, but yet they felt inclined to raise the price. Sony can suck it.

Starfield being 10th for the year and potentially dropping is a huge warning to GamePass Day 1. It'll have to watch out for EA FC and RE4 lest it drop to 12th in the year.
wow...over 20% less in units sold for all 3?
PS5 isn't hitting those 25M units sold almost for sure then. Unless Sony somehow expected this.
They didn't, that's why we saw the aggressive bundle pricing.

November 2022 was around this:
PS5: 1.33m
NSW: 0.95m
XBS: 0.73m

So best case scenario for all consoles we are looking at this:
PS5: 1.06m
XBS: 0.58m
NSW: 0.57m

Pretty terrible result for November for everyone. I wonder if we will have a stronger than usual December because of this.
People holding off to buy the PS5 Slim probably didn't do them any favors.

It doesn't seem like Alan Wake 2 went very well...

Ouch.

Its basically an adventure game. has practically no shooting. not sure why they made a game like this but it won several awards so i guess it was like one of those oscar bait movies.

They need to go back to Max Payne style games. Mix in story with actual gameplay. I dont like control despite the heavy focus on combat because the story sucks. Max Payne has that heart they need to mix in with tight combat.

LOL Xbox!

Barely outselling the almost 7-year old Switch with TWO DISCOUNTED 3-year old consoles!
Switch should not be used to compare against consoles. its effectively a handheld selling to kids just like the DS did. Every hardcore gamer who owns a switch already has one by now.

Switch was outselling the PS5 just last year. Means nothing. PS5 is a fucking juggernaut. XS sales should be compared only to the PS5 and the previous gen's X1. Switch's hybrid model has completely ruined any kind of fair comparison they might have with traditional consoles.

Do you have the estimates for Nov 2016? Best I could find was 1.1m for PS4 and 1.0m for XBO.

November 2023 for PS5/XBS is equivalent to November 2016 for PS4/XBO

PS5 (Nov 2023) = 1.05m
PS4 (Nov 2016) = 1.10m

XBS (Nov 2023) = 0.58m
XBO (Nov 2016) = 1.00m

Basically PS5 is at least close to what PS4 was doing in the equivalent month but Xbox Series is far behind Xbox One Nov 2016 sales.

Wait. I remember the first one had decent amounts of action. The sequel is basically nothing like the first one?
Have only played for around 5 hours and no. nothing like it. First one was basically a large open world with A LOT of combat like you remember. This one ive had maybe 2-3 combat encounters. The rest has been gathering clues and watching a character talk for 5 hours. Its not bad per se. but its definitely not like the first game which was 70% shooting, 30% exploration.

Anyway, incredible stability for Spider-Man 2, going from #1 to #2 in such a busy month and only on PS5. Miles Morales also showing up like that...and even God of War Ragnarok.
Ragnarok may even increase with the DLC releasing this month, who knows. It'll be interesting to see what happens.

It shows just how many units the PS5 had to of sold in November.

Xbox sales suck compared to both PS5 and Xbox One as well

The fact that they sell the same units of the 7-year old Switch is still laughable as people know that Switch 2 is just around the corner and still, the discounts are not as big as Microsoft's
