Would China taking control of Taiwan be seen as a direct conflict with the United States. What kind of military action would be expected?

The defense agreement is worded in such a way that it doesn't outright call for military action. More likely China cripples Taiwan economically, and then moves in after their situation gets dire. If it does get hot and US does not commit the military to intervene, the entire idea of US protection gets called into doubt.

Bigger issue is China letting Un off his leash and let's him be more provocative towards SK. The idea of Trump handling NK tantrums is...terrifying to say the least.

I doubt that's going to happen. China has more to lose from an unstable North Korea than anyone other than South Korea.

I agree. Dealing with North Korea takes an adult with patience who can rise about the provocations and nonsense. Trump certainly doesn't fit that profile.
