Biggest crow a developer has served this past gen?

Demon's Souls: It looked like standard niche jank initially and then turned out to be among the best games of the generation.

Deus Ex Human Revolution: A lot of the stuff during it's promotion suggested it would be more Invisible War crap, and then it ended up coming much closer to the original game than I could have ever expected.

Arkham Asylum: Licensed game by a pretty inexperienced developer coming out close to the new movies? Yeah. Then it turned out to be the start of one of the best licensed game series ever.

While Bulletstorm was as enjoyable as I expected gameplay wise I ate crow on the writing, which I thought was going to be unbearable based on the promotion yet turned out to be possibly my favourite part of the game.

I have a feeling after Watch Dogs, The Order is next on the list of crow to eat for this gen. Except of course, for the gamers who want certain games to be exactly what they like and any type of genre that is different, will be shitted on over and over again because in their mind, they think that every game developer in the world must appease them, and them only. Good thing has no crazy, entitled gamers like that here.. none. 0. Nada.

Last generation, I would say Demons Souls. To a degree Halo 4, the quality wasn't that big of a drop off considering Bungie left even though the multiplayer unfortunately lacked a decent amount of staying power.

Monolithsoft with Xenoblade. A lot of people shit talked it when it debuted as Monado, especially the graphics. Turned out amazing and does some awesome technical stuff to achieve its look.

That game was supremely shitty though. The combat, writing and quests were F2P korean MMO tier.

Was it though? The multiplayer was fun, yeah, but if they didn't do it would they have been able to allocate those resources to the singleplayer instead?

I don't think that's ever how it actually works. If anything it just would have ended up with the game coming out a little earlier, but I doubt it would have added much to the actual game.

Oh god. You are very much in the minority in that viewpoint.

Hahaha true that.

Would you guys say the PS3 itself was crow? $599USD and nogaems was a thing for a while.

It lost Sony billions, had the inferior multiplats, gave many developers tons of difficulty due to Cell, lost the utter domination the PS1 and PS2 had, and took the entire generation just to reach a respectable number when considering the brand (still came in last for the gen). Not a single crow has been served.

Another vote for ME3 multiplayer from me.

"UGH, I NEED to do multiplayer to max out war assets? This is so stupid, but fine. Hmmm, this isn't terrible I guess. Okay, this is kind of fun. FUCK you phantom...requeueing, not going out like that! Huh? Oh right, there is single player to finish... but, uh, no thanks."

And of course Batman: AA. I wasn't a GAF lurker at the time and for some reason I thought this was a fighting game (not a fan of the genre), so what tiny interest I might have had became zero interest. Even though I love Batman, I had figured it was yet another shitty game trying cashing in on my favorite source material. Paid no attention to when it even released. For some reason I stumbled across a review for it that was glowing and realized it was not a fighting game and to this day it is the only game I have ever platinum-ed.

Rockband. I remember a lot of folks saying that despite Gh's popularity, no one was going to pay $200 to play some plastic instruments.

In the end, it ended up being even a bigger hit then GH was, and they couldn't make the games fast enough.

Lots of good answers in here so far. One I haven't seen is Dark Souls II PC edition. During all the #downgrade fervor, much was said about how DSII looked awful and with the delay of the PC release by a month or so, there was lots of speculation as to how the PC version was merely a port and not the lead version as advertised. It would probably look fairly bad.

Well, I don't know how most people feel about it now, but I think that shit delivered. Its certainly not one of the very best looking games available, but it looks a million times better than consoles, had lots of graphics options and was extremely well optimized. I think its pretty clear that PC was definitely lead platform. Here's a comparison I posted from another thread:

And the comparison is almost somewhat unfair cuz the PS3 version there will likely be blown up to 1920x1080 on many people's displays(making it look even worse) and the PC version here is also running at a rock solid 60fps. It was like having an HD remaster of the game.

Did it? GH3 sold double RB1.

ETS2 may have single-handedly legitimized the niche vehicle simulation genre with the more casual audiences.

Hardcore flight sims have been respected for years, but trains, autos, farming, etc. have been jeered for ages. Because of ETS2's crossover appeal, many are now enjoying a full variety of vehicle simulation titles with no shame and no regret.

Borderlands 2 vita comes to mind, turned out to be a pretty good port considering the hardware.

eh its still kinda shitty in many aspects like required to map stuff on the back touchpads and the framerate is still not that great after the patch... BUT thats because i've played B2 on pc.

splinter cell blacklist for me. There marketing division really done that game a disservice. It ended up being probably my favorite linear 3rd person game with cover and guns.... period. There is a lot to like gameplay wise.

I thought this game only existed so they could sell you a Halo 3 Beta.

Ended up being better than Halo 3 and some of the most pure fun I had all generation.

Ha. I thought InFamous only existed to make me and my friend pay for Uncharted 2 betas. And then I fell in love with the series.

Actually this is a twofer. I thought multiplayer would only sour Uncharted. We played the hell out of that beta and then the actual game.

This. I remember people saying that they were buying a Halo demo with a free game as bonus. Then it turned that game was FUCKAWESOME.

Three games for me.

Demon's Souls.
I remember the first time I saw offscreen footage of the game. I thought to myself that a game that has such framerate issues and boring fantasy setting is a joke. After actually playing it, I regarded it as one of the best arpgs of the generation.

Batman: Arkham Asylum.
I had this pre-ordered long before reviws hit. I never actually thought it looked bad, on the contrary: All footage from the game looked cool. What had me worried was review embargos and that only reviews with great scores could be published before a certain date. It had me worried and I thought it was a scummy move by the publisher. Turns out, the game is my favorite superhero game of all time.

Nier.
The first screens I saw looked like shit, plain and simple. Character and enemy design didn't impress me, swearing in the opening made me raise my eyebrows considering it's supposed to be a fantasy game. Graphics and combat didn't look hot. I still maintain that they are not, but Nier is a game that is better than the sum of its parts. I'm still sad the studio went under.

Wii Sports/Wii Fit seem like the obvious choices on consoles. Nintendogs was the clear winner on traditional handhelds; I distinctly remember the reactions to Famitsu's 40/40 review, and then the game went on to be one of the best selling games of the generation.

I think Angry Birds and Farmville also absolutely qualify.

this is the real answer

Splinter Cell: Blacklist. It's not Chaos Theory, but it was a hell of a lot better than I expected it to be.
I was going to mention this but:

1. Their marketing team needs to eat that crow, not the people who took the game's early marketing as representative. Ubi is fully responsible for people thinking the game had tossed stealth to the wayside to focus on explosions.
2. Not sure if the game even sold well enough for them to afford crow to serve.

It was an awesome Splinter Cell though.

Wonderful 101

We all thought... "What's this low poly casual kiddie shit" when images were first released.

We did? I got the impression that pretty much all of GAF were pretty excited about it.

The same with XCOM:EU. The response to the unveiling of that game was an OMG!!! from most people.

Lou multiplayer isn't that good but keep fighting that good fight.
Are you talking to yourself here? Most people are saying that it took nothing away from the main game, which it didn't. You're the only one bucking the trend right now.

And I would say that UC2 MP definitely delivered in spades, and didn't hold SP back at all. Hell, UC2 in its entirety served up a lot of crow, the visuals and the MP being the biggest slayers of doubt.

Diablo 3 console editions served heaping servings of legendary crow upon the whole "it'd never work on consoles" crowd.

It not only works, but by my experience it works better.

And I fucking called it, years ago :)

I think a good number of people dismissed Sonic and All-Star Racing Transformed before it released. Something something cash-in, sell-out, etc.

Really? I'd say that was more for the first one. The first one looked like yet another poor sonic game and came out of nowhere being an extremely awesome racer.

Also Mass Effect 3 MP is just an amazing example. Saw it, knew it would be bad, played it, didn't like it then played it a little bit more with friends.

I only played ME3 1 time but the only reason I didn't sell it (and bought the trilogy) was because of the MP. Over 400 hours.

OP could have explained what serving crow means. As a filthy foreigner, this was the first time I heard that phrase and it's not intuitive at all.

Anyway, Batman I guess. It was supposed to be just another licensed game and those always suck. It ended up at the top of many GOTY lists and as one of the biggest franchises in gaming.

Guitar Hero consistently outsold Rock Band until Warriors of Rock/Rock Band 3. Still, Rock Band consistently reviewed better.

Still haven't played this on any platform yet...I'm still holding out on D3 for PS4, August 19th can't come soon enough.

I agree with this, Wolfenstein, and Crackdown.
