Biggest crow a developer has served this past gen?

I thought this game only existed so they could sell you a Halo 3 Beta.

Ended up being better than Halo 3 and some of the most pure fun I had all generation.

yup

DmC is a good game but it didn't serve out crow.

That is to say the fans expected inferior combat, no lock on, 30 FPS and dumbed down mechanics which NT provided along with the game selling worse. Most people actually expected a better presentation/story than previous DMC games so even if you think DmC excelled in those areas that doesn't really count as crow eating.

I ate crow on Godhand. I thought it looked mediocre from the trailers but after playing it I ate crow.

Driver San Francisco made a good comeback.

Batman AA was so under the radar, I never knew it existed till way after launch and my initial thought was comic book character, no chance.

For me personally it's all the folks that doubted Mistwalker and Hironobu Sakaguchi. Many felt Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey wouldn't be anywhere close to as good as Final Fantasy 13. It was thought by many that Final Fantasy 13 would mop the floor with both.

I think in the end the total opposite turned out to be true. There was lots of doubt about Mistwalker and what they'd be able to accomplish with such ambitious projects, especially with Artoon doing the development heavy lifting on Blue Dragon, or even whether they would have all kinds of trouble with Unreal Engine 3. We heard there were issues with the engine, issues that apparently delayed many other games, and yet they still manage to ship such a fantastic looking game as a Japanese dev before many others could. Then also toss in their work on the Last Story on the Wii. They, to me, overachieved in the previous gen.

So, Mistwalker and Hironobu Sakaguchi, and their overall competence and ability as a dev to put out big and ambitious projects that are just overall great games, was the biggest crow served up this past gen, because there were many doubters.

Mass Effect 3

I bought it for the story, hated it so much I didn't finish it, and spent countless hours having a blast in MP.

I think the Tomb Raider reboot surprised a lot of people. Course, it didn't help that the dev was out there talking the whole 'you'll want to protect her' deal.

I'm kinda getting that vibe with The Order and RAD saying all the wrong things.

huh? Tomb Raider ended up being just as shitty as we expected if not a little worse. None of the concerns people had going into it were proven wrong in any way. It selling well and appealing to game reviewers was never in doubt.

I think Splinter Cell: blacklist deserves a mention. Coming off Conviction, the godawful shoot bang reveal, and the horrible spin in regards to Ironside's departure the game actually turned out really well aside from the story. Too bad it tanked.

Deadly Premonition? People wrote it off based on its archaic control scheme and PS2-era graphics. It and Nier now usually come up when you hear about underrated gems of the past gen.

Add Binary Domain to that as well. It ended up being a lot better than a suspected Gears of War ripoff.

I was hesitant about putting God Hand, but you and me both ate crow on that.

Holy shit I had a feast of crows.

I don't know if Arkham Asylum was ever really a crow serving. That game looked good from the moment it was revealed, had a big hype train going on with it, had a marketing hype train for it, and pretty much had its own demo/kiosk at a lot of gamestops.

I don't think anybody expected it to be a bad game.

Being inferior to its predecessors and selling worse than all of them qualifies as serving crow now?

well it was supposed to revitalize the brand and be ninja theory's breakout title. So I'd imagine a portion of the press and NT fan base got a huge helping of crow. So large that cvg couldn't choke it down.

Viva Piñata maybe? People were basically like, "wtf is this baby shit. Put Rare on something good" but it turns out the game was really deep and interesting.

As for the game that served crow to me, maybe The Walking Dead? I didn't even care enough to look at screenshots cause I just assumed it would be garbage, but after some really positive impressions from the first episode I decided to check it out, and that was some delicious crow.

Eh, it's ultimately subjective but I still legitimately think DmC was the worst game I personally played in 2013. The gameplay stripped a ton of things from the DMC formula, contributed nothing new in place of any of that, and the story/writing was stunningly awful.

I can see that if you didn't play a lot of games in 2013.

The story is fucking garbage, won't argue about it.

Uncharted 2 multiplayer.
Assassins Creed Brotherhood multiplayer.
Mass Effect 3 multiplayer.
The Last of Us multiplayer.

I'm seeing a trend.

Just started playing this game and goddamn is it good. I remember when people were talking so much shit about it.

I never gave it a glance until after it was out. Just thought "nother dumb sooter, no thanks". The praises it got made me look at it a little more closley, so glad I did

Admittedly 2013 was a bit of a down year for games for me. But I also actively don't pursue games that I know look bad / wont mesh with my tastes. Colonial Marines being the exception.

Shadowrun 360

Don't know how well this qualifies since it didn't sell well and was definitely content light for the price but plenty of people (including me) loved it. Before release, people were calling this game the devil the same way and for the same reasons people do Nosgoth now.

I'm gonna go with Human Revolution. The final product seemed to silence most of the haters. The crow would have been even bigger and tastier had they done a better job with the boss fights and ending.

I ate crow on Bulletstorm. I thought it would be a juvenile, unfunny, derivative FPS. I was terribly, terribly wrong and I was glad to be.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a pretty big one. The original game is held to an impossibly high standard by the PC elite, and HR is the sequel to the almost universally reviled Invisible War. But it turned out pretty great in the end.
Agreed... I was tentatively excited for the game considering I never though it could live up the original. I was extremely pleased when it came close.

Uncharted 2 multiplayer.
Assassins Creed Brotherhood multiplayer.
Mass Effect 3 multiplayer.
The Last of Us multiplayer.

I'm seeing a trend.
Uc2 multiplayer was ruined in patches.
brotherhood apes the ship. Once people knew this you knew it would be at least decent.
Lou multiplayer isn't that good but keep fighting that good fight.

It surprised me because of how bad it ended up being.

Yeah I remember playing this, it was great, but come on dude, that was a lightning strike that has yet to strike again.
There was also Batman on NES which is regarded as a classic. And Marvel vs Capcom I suppose, though it's not strictly a "superhero" game I guess.

Isn't there a sizable potion of Zelda fans who don't like Wind Waker?
True, but they don't seem to have any complaints about the graphics. The sailing, triforce hunting, easy dungeons, and small size of the islands are their targets of ire. Nowadays WW's graphics are universally praised as far as I can tell.

I ate crow for this one. As a Team Silent fan, I approved of this reimagining and looked forward to a reboot of the series in this light.

Was not expecting this game to be good after getting through Homecoming.

You're lucky, I always get negatively surprised. This last month I played Far Cry 3, it went like:

MAN THIS GAME LOOKS AWESOME, WHY IS IT THAT SO MANY PEOPLE HATE ON IT??

*30 hours later*

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

When Demon Souls came out, I did not have a PS3. My friend, however, did, and he was mad hyping it up, so I looked it up on Youtube, and saw janky. I dismissed his opinion, and that's was that.

Flash foward to me getting a PS3, then first thing I do is borrow some games, including Demon Souls. I didn't want to play it. It looked super garbage, and janky. No way the game was good.

Boy, that was the best tasting crow in my life.

not exactly a game, but i never thought id purchase an xbox console (xbox 360) before a playstation (PS3) last gen, but i did. 360 was one of the best consoles ive ever owned despitee the fucked up hardware problems.

This guy right here is Super Mario 3D World on release.

"I know we've had our differences, GAF. But just one time, before you die, you really ought to try... crow."

I'm not that sure if Uncharted 2's multiplayer itself counts, but the Uncharted 2 campaign would. Personally, most people I've seen talking shit about the multiplayer prior to the release were worried that it would negatively impact the single player's quality, they weren't really concerned about the multiplayer, and probably still don't care about it.

Probably this one http://hellqvistper.com/images/articles/cut-scenes_powerful_yet_often_missused_examples_from_dark_souls/travel.png[IMG]
I know you're joking but it is both figuratively and literally correct. I don't think anyone could have predicted the three soul games to continue hovering in the 89-92 range on metacritic.

Yep, good one.

Most recent one for me is Wolfenstein. I went from zero interest to loving this game.

I vote for Deus Ex Human Revolution.

Mass Effect 3s multiplayer is definitely a good choice.

Was it though? The multiplayer was fun, yeah, but if they didn't do it would they have been able to allocate those resources to the singleplayer instead?

Oh I'd say Killzone 2

after that trailer debacle they really did get awfully close, all things considered

imo they surpassed it.
some aspects of the trailer are still better then the final result, but overall the game looks better then the render.

There were a lot of "Don't you dare make another game in this series!" hysterics about games that ended up good to fantastic. Tomb Raider, Castlevania (although this one probably to a lesser degree) Deus Ex, Xcom.

Maybe Asscreed with Black Flag, I know I personally did it for this game, I was really jaded by Asscreed 3. Similarly Splinter Cell Conviction. Maybe Just Cause 2, don't think anyone was excited for that after the first game. Call of Juarez Gunslinger. Ubisoft and Square seem to do pretty okay in this regard.

Sonic Colors.

Before release, all we had to go on was that it was Wii exclusive, aimed specifically at younger children (even moreso than before), and was being developed by the team responsible for the last two Wii exclusive trainwrecks. For all intents and purposes, it had Sonic Cycle written all over it. In the end, we not only got a quality game, but we got the game that finally shattered the cycle.

Bulletstorm.

This is one of the ones I was going to mention. Bulletstorm got so much shit prior to its release because the advertisements for that game made it seem like nothing but grade-school humor and insults. They did a terrible job at actually showing off the gameplay, which ended up being a ton of fun. I really don't think most people would have expected to see that game sitting at about an 80% at Metacritic today.

Crackdown is another big one. Most people dismissed it as a way to get to the Halo demo. Then they had some time to kill prior to the demo and holy cow, Crackdown was actually really good! I wanted the game half because of the Halo demo and half because it actually looked fun. It ended up being one of the best games released on the Xbox 360 and remains one of my favorite titles to this day.

More recently, Wolfenstein takes the cake. It didn't get much in the way of good promo prior to release. I wasn't much looking forward to it simply because I didn't much care for the previous entries in the franchise that I had played. Then I received my review copy and wow, I was insanely impressed by what I was playing. I never would have expected a Wolfenstein game to play as well as that nor have a story that I actually gave a damn about.
