Can we talk about GAF's overreaction to PS Vita TV?

I saw this as the perfect Netflix+Minecraft device for the U.S. I never saw it as some sort of Vita ecosystem savior in Japan.

It's built more for a Western audience where something like the AppleTV can sell. If a Japanese person wants to console game in front of a TV, they're going to console game in front of a TV. Otherwise they'll be gaming on the go.

I still have no idea why any kind of microconsole is appealing, especially since the VitaTV can't actually play most of the quality Vita games.

Wow really? If so, then it makes me question the point of this device.

Is there a list of what it can and can't play?

Hmmmm.......Didn't coldfoot get banned for making posts like this (let alone you making a whole thread like one)?

uh he isn't banned? And I seriously doubt he got banned for that. He probably got banned for one of his PC tirades.

Pretty much. It's a cool idea

I mean of course it might be okay for people who really don't want a handheld...but what about the resolution on a big screen...I can't imagine it would look good on HDTVs...

For a cheap device though, you'd get access to a lot of features, with PS Now too especially...vita tho guys...

I didn't mean it as a thread to call out members or make fun of people's reactions, if it's against the rules I will take it down. I remember just when it was revealed I thought it was cool but almost instantly realized the lack of market appeal for this thing... it was by far one of the biggest overhypes I have seen on GAF and I just didn't understand it. Nothing about this device seems like something that would skyrocket sales. Literally nothing. This thread was more meant to be a platform to understand the future of this thing, and what will happen now that it has tanked.

So you just wanted to point out that you were right and "GAF" was wrong.
Bravo.

I always saw it as something made more for American audiences than Japanese ones. A home console version of a handheld device makes no sense for that market. I figured the only reason it was released in Japan first was because it was a consolation prize for not getting the PS4 right away.

I still think it could do ok here in NA. Get Playstation Now, Vita games, Netflix, etc. on there and price it the same as an Apple TV and they have a product that I could see appealing to a decent amount of people.

i await this thread's sequel when people realise that playing smeary artifact ridden PS2 games with half a second of input lag isn't all that fun.
I didn't say I'd buy it or that I'm excited for it but I think there is a market.

It's a device which suits the west more, which is why the reactions and sales are in such a big disparity.
Streaming services aren't that big in Japan like in te US.

Not saying it will be huge here but its chances are much better. Japan only got it first to bridge the PS4 launch.

I'd still buy one if it was out in the US. It's a cheap, quiet Netflix player that also plays a few games I'd like to play. Seems worth it to me, especially cause I'd probably never buy a normal Vita.

They will need to beef up their media support on Vita in order to have it compete though. Not only Netflix, but Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc. If it's supposed to be like an Apple TV with access to Vita/PS1/PSP games as well as upcoming Playstation Now (Gaikai), then it needs the media apps to compete.

This is a box for your TV, costing $100, that will play PSP, PSV, PS1 digital games. PS1/PS2/PS3 games over PS Now. PS4 games remotely.

It's an Apple TV competitor that also plays Minecraft.

Never expected this to really sell that well. Still interested in getting one if it gets released here in the west.

In my defense, I will say that the game changer I saw is Sony providing a cheap and small set top box which plays Vita software in the living room for the international audience. They haven't really delivered on that! :(

To do ok here, it would have to be placed somewhere noticeable at retailers. Unless someone is specifically looking for it, which I don't see why anyone other than someone who follows the industry would know of its existence in the first place, I doubt it will be a noticeable product for consumers to latch on to.

If the system and games barely get any real estate or notice, why would this?

A LOT of people on GAF are desperate for the Vita to be a success. Sony could release a potato with an overpriced Vita memory card in it and you'd get a ton of posters talking about how much they want one and how it'll save the Vita.

What's the point of this? People were happy about something and they really liked the concept. Are we trying to make them feel or look dumb? Should people hold back enthusiasm and hype from now on because they might be wrong?

I'm sure everybody here has been hyped for something and praised it only for it to be a big fall

Yeah, I'm not getting this thread either. It's okay to be wrong.

I would guess the new TV service Sony presented at CES will also come to it.

They shouldn't market it in the games section. It should be marketed in the Netflix streaming device section. Against Roku, Apple TV, Google TV, etc.

It should get called something different in the US. Like Sony Media System or SonyTV. Something to differentiate itself from a "good as dead as far as mindshare" system like Vita.

I don't care, OP. I still want one. Not sure how they marketed it in Japan or even what the market was for it there, or how they'd market it overseas if/when it arrives, but I think it has some potential if executed properly.

Thank god for this thread! When I saw the thread reading real-lime reactions, I thought I was in a Twilight Zone. "Vita saved!" From what? A complete disregard of brand awareness and hype for games?

While it probably wasn't presented in the best manner, why ask a question that was explained right in the OP
which of course no one reads.

Now that people's emotions have settled and the thing is likely to die off, can anyone explain why people thought this was going to be a "game changer"?

OP, would you mind going through that thread and editing in my post? I still believe in it. Since y'know, Japan isn't everywhere else. I'm sticking to my guns, reskin the UI, bundle Minecraft, get all the video media apps in there, 4 million easy. In its first year =p

Obviously, Sony has a plan for it. I just hope my plans aren't bigger than theirs.

it's a Sony product, on GAF

like Apple in the real world, they could have announced they were selling packaged shit and people would have went nuts and posted banderas gifs and #basedyosp

in my defense i don't even remember writing that post in the OP, so there

To be fair, I don't think what I said about it being a more attractive off-shoot of the Vita than the 2DS was for the 3DS or Sony generally handling themselves far better at the beginning of this gen than '06 is wrong. Just that the VitaTV wound up bombing regardless.

This type of stuff definitely needs to be called out. I know it's console wars time and all but really some people bathe themselves with bias and it really shows at times like that.

I never really got the point of this device.

Yeah, cheaper way to play SOME Vita games on your TV. Why not just... buy a Vita to play all the games? Or just invest on the video out mod, even though it's very pricey ($300?). Or just play on your OLED.

It just doesn't make sense. Handhelds are more popular in Japan. Vita does very poorly outside it.

By the way how much did the PSX (the PS2+DVD player) sell?

Which wouldn't help anything. Most consumers don't look at mindshare in that matter. If it can be presented to them in an attractive fashion, than it will do well. Which Sony will not bother to do outside of tradeshows and press releases that these people are hardly aware or care of.

I don't see how sticking it in the Roku/Apple TV area aka just Best Buy in a cluttered corner, separate from the supportive software and peripheral products, improves its chances.
