I would like a female doctor, but more than anything I would like a male companion.
Yeah, I loved that Rory was so influential in his being along for the ride. It'd be nice to have the Doctor take a male companion around one of these times.
I would like a female doctor, but more than anything I would like a male companion.
Is that a problem with the Doctor or the Companion, though? Rose & Donna admittedly both had the "empty lives" thing going on, but those two were at least believable, real-feeling woman who I think were actually both fantastic role models for young girls. The thing about Rose is while she might have had that boring no-life council estate and chips life, that life has more in common with the average British young woman than not, really.
And Martha's fantastic for that - there's the icky unrequited love thing, but she's a go-getter, a career woman, and the glue that holds her family together. Amy and Clara have been a bt more blank, but that's been bloody discussed to death.
No doubt the companion relationship needs to change, but I think that's entirely unrelated to the Doctor gender/sexism debate other than the fact that if we actually had stronger and more outstanding female lead characters in Doctor Who there'd probably be a lot less clamouring for a female to be cast as the Doctor. I think a lot of the noise around the latter is a response at least to a certain degree for the former.
Apropos of nothing, I'm so glad Matt's going at a different time than Moffat so that Moffat doesn't feel the need to taint his Doctor's leaving with his own emotions about it.
You just know that when Moffat leaves he's taking Capaldi with him
To be fair it's probably nicer to give whoever takes over a clean slate like RTD did.

Capaldi should be the Doctor until he dies.

It's an upgrade though.
Nah, I think an overlap is better. Much as having a companion along for the regeneration ride is better. And I think there's a very conscious attempt to avoid doing the same Showrunner+Doctor+Companion switch all at once thing that happened at the end of RTD/Tennant's end of tenure. My money's on Moffat leaving at the end of the next season, personally.
Isn't Capaldi only signed on for one year?
That would actually be a pretty good Doctor.. lol.I have nothing to add except that I hope Mos Def becomes the next Doctor. Dude killed it in Hitchhikers.

I don't see why young boys can't look up to a female Doctor. The Doctor being male hasn't stopped young girls from admiring him.All this talk about a female Doctor... I don't know.
I think the Doctor is fairly unique among fictional role models for young boys. Batman or Superman claim to hate violence, and try and shore that claim up by making a half assed attempt to only brutally maim and not kill their enemies. The Doctor does use violence when he has to, but he hates it. He's all about being angry and scared but desperately trying to overcome that and do the right thing.
The only other character I can think of with a similar mindset for young boys to look up to is Aang from The Last Airbender. Who incidentally, now I think of it, has actually regenerated (or reencarnated) into a girl.
Maybe that didn't make much sense. But I think having that character to look up to means a lot to young boys. I think it helped me when I was a gangly nerdy pre teen. I think creating a new female role model character would be better than going FemDoc.
As for a black Doctor, if I could pick anyone to play him it'd be that guy who played the Operative from Serenity. He would be perfect. I guess after 12 Years a Slave he'll be way too famous for it though.
If they fail to renew Capaldi there will be rage, I can tell you that.
I really think that the Daleks will become inadequate as an enemy with Capaldi's Doctor. Capaldi is about ten times as intimidating as that race can ever be. They need to bring in the Master. Can you imagine Capaldi's fiery Doctor playing off of Cumberbatch's cool Master? Unf.
It is unfortunate for Matt, because no other Doctor has ever had this problem, but the fact is that he's standing in the way of Capaldi so he's gotta go and I'll be glad when he does.shut up shut up shut up

Its the best part about the show, I'll miss Matt for sure, but I'll enjoy the new one, there hasn't ever been a Doctor I've outright disliked (I can never choose a least favourite tbh). I just want Doctor Who to continue and I'll watch it forever.Matt is awesome, but at the same time I've never been more excited about a new Doctor. With Tennant and Smith I was nervous.

If I was forced to choose a least favourite it would be him, for a long time it was Hartnell, but going back now as an adult I can say I enjoy him a fair bit. Just something about Davison I don't like, I dunno he feels useless at times.Matt will always be remembered for being the Doctor that broke Who in the States.
And while I don't dislike any of the doctors either, I can definitely name my least favorite.it's Davison, btw

That said I look at all the Doctors as I look at Zelda games, all amazing but any other game series standards, but some just are a step above the rest.

Oh god really? Fuck that's .... well not exactly not good but it could end very badly. Only signing Eccleston to one was a terrible mistake. Much as I love him as the Doctor (he's my favourite of the new lot) I wish they'd taken on someone more committed instead.
Calling me stupid, I actually prefer Colins costume to Peters. And yeah I think thats it, he wants to be serious, but you just can't take him serious, seems like a huge pushover. Would have loved to have seen him as a more darker manipulative Doctor I think. He was just miscast. He's almost as serious as Pertwee, but without any of the badass and swagger. And I loathe his costume. It's like he's dressed in an early 90's PC case. So beige.
Colin was a good Doctor, just saddled with some of the worst stories ever. Had the writing been up there during his run I think he would have lasted longer. That said I'm glad he ended/forced out when he did because we got McCoy and McCoy was awesome.I don't think Davison is bad - I think all the Doctor actors were at least decent, regardless of the material they were given - but his Doctor just isn't terribly interesting. There was nothing particularly unusual or unexpected about him, while even Colin Baker had a certain imperiousness and the comparative novelty of being quite unlikeable and inept in many ways. Davison was just, sort of, there.
Nah. He's straight-up got a different costume for most of this episode. It's very similar to the one he wore in The Snowmen, just slight differences. His 'current' costume seems to appear briefly too, based on episode shots that have been released.
