The PCH-1000 isn't setting the world on fire or anything. Is this replacing the OLED model? Would be a bad move on Sony's part.

I wouldnt say that LCD is rubbish. I also prefered my LCD TV for PS3 compared to my sister's plasma TV (it was an older model though, so maybe things have improved. She now has a LED TV instead). Maybe OLED and plasma is better though, but i have no complains about my LCD TV and i use it 99% for gaming.
Pretty much. OLED trumps LCD in exactly those metrics most relevant for gaming.

Not for handheld gaming though. Gaming in sunshine is still a problem for OLEDs. One that not many seem to care about here, but for the average handheld consumer, I suspect the backlight will be more welcome than black levels.
In the real world, a lot of people are just going to see the brighter screen and prefer it and not really care about the contrast levels.
I use an iPhone 5 and really wish Apple would scrap the LCD in favor of oled. Will never happen, though. :-/If it is an iPhone 5 or iPad quality IPS-LCD, I would much rather have that over OLED. I would imagine, at this price, it is a lower quality LCD though.
See but here's where things get downright weird. Everyone talks about how bad OLED is in direct sunlight, but they say it as if LCD is "good" in the sunlight, which it isn't. You go from bad to less bad. Your going to struggle to play games in sunlight due to reflections on your panel, plus diminishing brightness. LCD isn't good in the sunlight, just brighter and whiter lol.

We need color e-ink screens with sub-millisecond response times and no input lag![]()

if this means I can get an original vita for dirt cheap soon then hell yes!
Plasma tech has indeed come a long way. But I warn you now, if you look at a modern plasma then try to go back to an LCD, it's pretty rough. The motion blur of an LCD paired with all these shaky cam movies makes the screen literally un-watchable to me. It's a blurry awful mess. Plus unless your willing to spend $1500+ on an LCD, your black levels are probably actually grey levels. Movies and games like Pirates of the Caribbean or Batman are comically worse. Once you get used to the advantages of better screen tech, it's really quite jarring to go back.
I had to finish watching Breaking Bad on my Vita because of how many dark scenes there were lol.
I've lived 2 years with a phone with an OLED screen, LCD is more than good enough. I don't get the hype over it, especially if Sony puts in a good quality LCD which they likely will.
Damn dude, sorry to hear that.I was tempted to go buy the walking dead bundle today on a whim (because hey, my wife asked to separate for a couple of months and left today!, yay me) but i can't decide if it's a stupid irresponsible decision and then this resigned news hit, so now i really don't know.
Dark scenes on my Vita are ruined by the black splotches and patchy streaks which Sony considers acceptable and won't replace. It's hugely distracting and frankly ruins the screen for me.
Anyway, only CRTs beat lightboost monitors for motion clarity so I respectively disagree that that LCD's are "rubbish for gaming." The smoothness is a night and day difference compared to my 9g Kuro e-lite.
Also, as long as OLED's continue to use sample-and-hold displays, they will continue to have motion blur no better than the best (TN) LCDs and Plasmas despite their near instant pixel response times.
Light boost requires work on the input side. It's not something the LCDs will handle on their own.Dark scenes on my Vita are ruined by the black splotches and patchy streaks which Sony considers acceptable and won't replace. It's hugely distracting and frankly ruins the screen for me.

No OLED? So that means this version will allow you to use the browser?
The old one burned in the scroll bar I believe
But now your talking more specialized equipment. Obviously some of the best LCD displays on top end monitors are going to be great. But generally (as in most LCD tv's), the display is junk for gaming. OLED and Plasma are just better for your standard purposes, and those "black splotches" on the vita still leaves the screen darker than your typical LCD panel.
"Smoothness" on a Plasma's 600hz refresh is not something to scoff at. I agree, it's night and day.
This is the right move by Sony. They are addressing everything that is wrong with the Vita, including the price. Until a month ago, you couldn't make me buy one, but now after all these changes I'll buy one by Christmas this year.
The big differences are
1.) Contrast Ratios. OLED gets vastly superior color spectrum compared to regular LCD's.
2.) Refresh rates, again, because of LCD's poor ability to jump between colors, you'll get this really awful blur anytime the color shifts (which is frequently in video games especially). OLED and Plasma don't have this issue.
3.) Black levels. LCD's are typically crap in this area due to the constant need of a backlight. Again something plasmas and OLED's don't have.
LCD is rubbish for gaming.
The specialized equipment is a simple offshoot of one of LCD's primary strengths though, it's present day LED brightness. The technology is here TODAY and has been mass produced for nearly two years. It isn't widespread in large part because the CE industry and customers don't care about display response times. Why else would we have so many junk LCDs as you mentioned. As John Carmack said, something is wrong when you can send a packet around the world faster than the typical lag on a TV.
We've hyped OLED's for over a decade now and are still waiting for all the promised benefits. Why can't we acknowledge what the mature LCD tech can still achieve?
The night and day difference was between my lightboost lcd or FW900 crt compared to my Kuro. I admit it's unfair comparing 120 and 140hz to 60hz though.
This is simply not true. I've used the browser a lot and I have no burn in. I bought my vita on day 1 and there are no issues with the screen. Maybe people don't have it auto turn off after use?
Exactly how much of a problem is that on the OG Vita?
Is it really a noticeable thing?
No OLED, no buy. Might as well buy a used one.
Why did they have to downgrade it to LCD exactly?
It looks like splattered bodily fluids under a blacklight.
Sorry for the grossness, but that's the best description I can give it.
Good thing is that it only shows up when the screen goes black in games. So it doesn't really happen during the game.
...and that's why Lightboost is not an acceptable solution. It requires a lot of muscle on the hardware side and leaves out a LOT of content. The night and day difference was between my lightboost lcd or FW900 crt compared to my Kuro. I admit it's unfair comparing 120 and 140hz to 60hz though.
Sony cuts the weight of the Vita, and OLED, and iy´s still selling it at $200? I thought they would lower the price further with this new model.
