The Wii U in a worse or better shape after the PS4 reveal?

Watching the Sony press conference today I was thinking about the Wii U...

There's been a lot of speculation whether the Wii U using not exactly next-gen tech would hurt Nintendo with game support and with consumers in the long run. But to be honest, after seeing the conference, i'm not so sure anymore.

To the average joe, do these games really look that much better? Is the average consumer really going to want to upload his videos to the web and share them with all his friends?... I almost feel the Wii U has become a more attractive system after the press conference, especially if Nintendo is able to drop the price of the U by the launch of the next-gen consoles.

Same.

Nintendo has their own problems to deal with and their own lawn to tend to.

If anything, competition will mean they will have to really bring it at E3 but that was probably their mindset anyway due to disappointing sales.

As far as visuals go, nothing is making Nintendo worry that happened today nor would anything really in that regard due to their philosophy and past success with "limited hardware".

Games will always rule the day and nothing shown makes anything from anyone else obsolete.

No one buys a Nintendo system to be wowed by its graphics or tech, at least not as their main focus.

Nintendo's selling point has always been their quality first party.
That being said, the WiiU need to start releasing more first party games to stay relevant.

2GiB DDR3 to 8GiB GDDR5 is a huge difference, means a lot when it comes to graphics.

To the average joe, do these games really look that much better?
Yes.

It's an amazing feature for community building. Look what similar features have done for the Halo franchise.

Price point will be in the Wii U's favor, I guess it will come down to target audiences again.

What s crucial isnt the graphical capabilities. To me PS4 seems to do more intelligently all Nintendo could have done in terms of social gaming. I see PS4 hurting wii U a lot depending on price. Also the thing showed y Media Molecule could appealto the "casual" more than real games dumbed down.

To enthusiasts like us maybe, but to the casual consumer, they'll look at the pricetags first.

I'd say the same. They're doing their own thing.

Well in real terms worse, but I'd argue in relative terms they're better off. They now know what they're up against and frankly Sony looks to be making the same mistakes as the PS4 in a powerful console with a likely high price tag. Nintendo will be fine in Japan at least.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
As I said in another thread, I actually felt better about Wii U's prospects after watching it.
And the fact that Watch Dogs was confirmed for Wii U is just icing on the cake.

For some reason I felt better about my Wii U after the conference.

Not that I didn't like the show though. There will be awesome games on PS4, just like it happened with PS3.

These two will be a good combo this gen.

The WiiU is in the same shape after this presentation: The toilet.

Not because anything Sony showed, but because of the incredible display of incompetence, complacency and disorganized chaos that Nintendo offered so far.

If the WiiU goes the way of the Dodo, it's entirely on Nintendos cap.

Looking at the graphics of a true next gen machine. It's obvious that there is no way that WiiU will be getting down ports.

I think WiiU fucked.

Wii U should find its own niche as the cheaper and more friendly of the next-gen consoles. If Nintendo successfully position it that way in the coming months then it'll be fine.

Hasn't really changed.

They just need to focus on making the Wii U as appealing as possible. They can't get hung up on what Sony and MS are doing right now.

Same. Sony and Microsoft don't control Nintendo's future. Nintendo controls Nintendo's future, so they should start by announcing huge games at E3 if they want to turn this Wii U situation around.

Nintendo just needs to get the software ball rolling. They will find their place when that happens. They offer development stability to Japanese developers right now and that could be vital to a lot of support from Japan.

I lost a lot of interest in the Wii U myself. One of the cooler features of the Wii U is off-screen play. (And I seem to share this sentiment with a lot of GAFers). However Sony talked about streaming every PS4 game straight to your PSVita. This to me is much more exciting. I can have great visuals and high end games, along with off-screen play. (I may even be able to play my PS4 games outside of the house over Wifi.)

No change. Nintendo's strength will always be their first party games. Don't really have to keep saying it because we already know that.

For myself, it'll be nice to have a Wii U while I wait to get a PS4 later on. There's no rush to get one for me. Will want one but I think I can wait.

Worse. Once the generation really gets going and that 8 gigs really starts getting used, I don't see how multiform titles are going to be able to be scaled to WiiU without stupidly dumbing down the tech. It won't get Final Fantasy, it won't get Star Wars 1313, it won't get Destiny (online infrastructure)....it's gonna need some outstanding first party content, and Galaxy 3 ain't it.

Nintendo is in its own world. I dont know if you are talking about sales wise cause ps4 has not sold nothing yet. I would think microsoft is in more trouble. I know I am now leaning on getting ps4 instead of xbox and I am not alone I promise you that.

I'm sorry but this is really funny to me. Lol

They have their own problems to deal with, so whatever the PS4's up to is none of their concern.

Nintendo gonna Nintendo and do its own thing.

Worked pretty well so far for them in Japan for the 3DS.

Let the Mario and Zelda games flow this coming E3 and the Big N will be back to the top.

1313 and Destiny are both current gen games...

I don't think anything has changed. If the Wii U gets the games everyone expect, then what difference does 8gb of ddr5 ram mean?

Put in another way: If the Wii U continues to struggle in q3/q4 this year and into the next, it is not because of PS4, but because it fails to deliever it's own thing.

Two different approaches.
Sony comes at it with a "We're a technology company!" approach.
Nintendo comes at it with a "Screw technology we're an entertainment company!" approach.

I will say that Sony is totally poised to hold onto existing gamers and it gives them the true next gen. However, I'd say that Nintendo is in a better place to get non-gamers and non-traditional gamers more interested.

Still too early to tell. In the end, the old adage is true, "It's about the games stupid."

Worse when it comes to down ports. 8 GB of GDDR5 is a MASSIVE mountain for the the Wii U to overcome. Hell, even Durango will have some difficulty.

Its a good thing if Wii U is way weaker than the other two. Ive been counting on it, even hoping for it. The more outside the other two Nintendo is, the better.

About the same to worse. More than likely this kills the notion of downports being in the same ballpark. And if all those Japanese developers are really on board with the PS4, then that'll be another thing off the "Save the Wii-U' list from a while back, too.

But the Wii-U was always going to sink or swim based on Nintendo's software output. Regardless of the internet's gnashing of teeth over third parties, that remains what most people want out of it.

Nintendo will do their own thing. They have to figure out how to get the wii u adopted faster into the mass market.

I don't think the ps4 really impacted them in any way. A lot of people on this forum, even though game enthusiasts, understand that it's a niche market who will ultimately really care about graphics etc... to the degree ps4 seems to have over the Wii u

Most people care about the games. Wii u has the big Nintendo franchises. Nintendo needs to put them out.

If ps4 lights up the wii u in the market, it won't be because of 8gb gddr5 as a few people in this thread are mistaking as a major thing in the bigger scope of things....it will be because ps4 would have more games that more people want to play hence more people invest in one.

Honestly, it Mario kart u doesn't move units in a big way, I would be more worried about the mass market reception to the ps4 than the wii u

I want every console to succeed. Them all being healthy is the best for all gamers.

I think off-screen play is an amazing feature. There are three caveats to it with the PS4 though:
1) You need a Vita
2) Wii U has specialist hardware inside GamePad and the console to stream with zero lag, I'm not entirely sure whether Vita/PS4 does.
3) Vita doesn't have enough buttons (though presumably the rear touch pad could emulate triggers?)

Not sure what's with all these port talks. Seriously, what AAA third party games made it from the xbox and ps3 to the wii? I don't mean cod or madden either.

I was thinking that Nintendo could have a great Christmas going up against $400-$500 systems, especial if they have Mario Kart + price drop. Then again it still has to deal with possibly cheaper 360/PS3 with bigger libraries. I'm excited for the numbers either way!

Nintendo does what it always has done. Be different from it's competitors. And in this upcoming generation, be probably about half the price. I mean, anyone expecting the WiiU to still be $349 come November is insane. That baby will be between $200-$300 tops.

I'm also in the camp that those graphics aren't THAT big a leap. Killzone 4 looks like a CoD demo on a high end PC.

And that's a problem to me. Yes, they'll be better lighting and textures, but the experience over PS3 won't be that much different in terms of gameplay it seems.

That said, I'm probably still picking a PS4 over the next X-Box.

Do you not want 3 similar consoles, or do you want Nintendo to fail? Not trying to troll or start some console war though. Just curious.

It doesn't matter if the "average Joe" can't tell the difference between the tech of the consoles. Particularly if hardly anybody except Nintendo ends up putting games with effort on the Wii U.

It's almost never about the tech; it's about the games and it's a two-way street.
