Screen Digest: "Nintendo behind the next gen curve; isolated from market"

I don't see anything wrong with nintendo network

just lack of content ...

You don't see any problems with the account system used to interface with Nintendo Network? If you lose your 3DS, you literally need a police report in order to recover your digital purchases. Content is obviously an issue, as is pricing, but first you have to make people want to use your store.

As nice as this gif is, and as nice as it is to see it repeatedly linked in thread after thread, it does absolutely nothing to disprove the point in the OP about being behind next gen standards.

There is nothing to disprove as nothing has been announced.

What exactly did the Nintendo Direct do to cause all of this????

It was hugely successful, which the gaming press is afraid will show other publishers that they do not need ign/kotaku/etc. to market their games.

Which they don't.

The gaming press has become de factor PR firms for the publishers, reducing themselves to nothing more than an expendable commodity. Now that publishers will realize that they can go directly to the fans, there will be no reason for the gaming sites anymore.

And this scares the hell out of them.

Incredible. My favorite part:

What's missing from that list? Game Boy DS for one. Do you think Ubisoft is going to crank out the latest Ghost Recon for the DS? If they do, do you think they'll put a lot of work into giving the second screen an interesting use, maybe find some
innovative ways to exploit the touch screen for playing Tom Clancy shooters?

No. No way. There's a bigger chance of EA adapting NFL 2006 to use Nintendo's digital bongos.

...

That's why the Sony PSP is going to win. Publishers understand it: powerful 3D, familiar controls, absolutely zero innovation.

Gameboy DS is doomed.

Who got to decide what the "standard" for a generation is? Why do we need three machines that are the same? Who got to decide the rules for what video games are? I'd like to meet that guy, Video Game Joe, Mr. Joseph Video Game, boss of games.

I thought that was established this gen. Sony and MS are pretty much just competing against themselves now while Nintendo is in its own independent market. Valve/Steambox will be stepping in next-gen to fill that 3rd competitor hole left by Nintendo.
There isn't any "independent market".
Nintendo just do whatever they want regarding their videogame business.

Is this the answer to anything WiiU related now?

You guys really love the word "Doomed", don't you?

What does the Nintendo Direct have to do with this article?

I know and it's not really adding anything to the conversation. It kinda just sounds bitter and defensive. *shrugs shoulders*

I think it's more of a case of some people enjoying playing the victim. It's easier than actually confronting a problem. All these articles didn't spring up because of some massive media conspiracy to go after poor little old Nintendo. 24 hour news cycles etc.

Stop posting that fucking .gif everywhere, Jesus. The article is not about games.

"We would like to see Nintendo be more aggressive in 'hinging' off its devices using its online platform - Nintendo Network - onto third-party devices as Microsoft is starting to do with Xbox Smartglass and Sony is doing with PlayStation Mobile."

Smartglass doesn't have anything to do with XBL, does it? I thought that was just a local connection thing. Not sure why that's such a thing to live up to (also the only people I've ever seen give a fuck about SmartGlass are Microsoft PR, so yeah).

Playstation Mobile isn't amazing anyone either. I know they say as much in the article ("Neither of these solutions is significant at present") but at that point all you're saying is "Nintendo should also go in these unproven directions, even in the face of mass indifference".

I do find it somewhat odd that after a video where actually showed off multiple new games targeted at the core market we are getting sort of a deluge of negative Nintendo articles. Timing seems off and these should have been written after a Nintendo Direct where Nintendo did not deliver.

Nintendo has actually done something tangentially related to gaming and interesting with Miiverse and TVii. I don't really care for Twitter but Miiverse is definitely tapping into that market. Though the highly moderated nature of it is kinda off putting.

Can anyone disagree with this part?

"Nintendo ... is behind the curve in its online ... strategy."

Neither the 3DS nor the WiiU matches even circa 2005 functionality of Xbox Live. No unified ID; the continued usage of friend codes; not being able to log into other systems and redownload things you've already bought; having to pay extra to redownload Virtual Console games onto the WiiU... It's a mess.

But they kind of do need them... unless you can market a game with no review scores.

I for one don't care about scores but witness the utter meltdowns on game forums like this if a game doesn't score well. Especially exclusive games.

So that proves scores do matter which means game websites and magazines still matter to a lot of people. Heck taking Gaf as an example again we have separate threads just for game scores.

How to make an article criticizing Nintendo MAD LIB'S edition.

'Nintendo is behind the times because the ____ (game system) is not doing better than _____ (older game system), their legacy of IPs including ____ (current IP) are not doing better than game series like _____ (3rd Party IP) and _____ (another 3rd party IP).

Analyst say that Nintendo should _______ (something Nintendo will never do) in order to be relevant in the market again."

Right. But it's a given that the new systems will look better than the PS3 and 360, and we already have indicators of what better than PS3 and 360 looks like thanks to PC. And I don't think that gif is any sort of huge leap beyond PS3 and 360, never mind the upper limit of current PC games.

Who got to decide what the "standard" for a generation is? Why do we need three machines that are the same? Who got to decide the rules for what video games are? I'd like to meet that guy, Video Game Joe, Mr. Joseph Video Game, boss of games.

If people are fine with Nintendo doing their own thing, then fine. But given how defensive Nintendo fans tend to get when this subject comes up, I was under the impression it was pretty important to them for the Wii U to be competitive with the other consoles.

bwahahahahahahaha

Thank you for contributing to the conservation with well thought out and reasoned thoughts on the subject matter.

His point stands. Nintendo's strongest asset is its library of exclusive IP's that continue to sell.

Are you honestly telling me that Nintendo won't sell a boatload of Wii U's and 3DS's after a 3d Mario, Zelda, Smash Bros, and Animal Crossing are released?

Nintendo has actually done something tangentially related to gaming and interesting with Miiverse and TVii. I don't really care for Twitter but Miiverse is definitely tapping into that market. Though the highly moderated nature of it is kinda off putting.

See, this is actually why I'm sort of opposed to them saying Nintendo is behind the online curve too. Their approach to accounts remains terrible, of course- god knows if that'll ever change- and in terms of ecosystems, 3DS and Wii U need to be brought together ASAP. But Miiverse? Swathes of games launching on the eShop alongside retail? Those are the next-gen trends. "Behind the curve" is too simple an analysis of their online positioning. They're far from perfect- actually, that's too polite, they fucking suck at online for the most part- but you can't deny they have a decent grip on the future developments.

I think it's because of the note of desperation that the entire affair gave off. Nintendo fans will deny that that's what's going on obviously, but it sure felt like Nintendo was essentially screaming for attention after releasing their brand new console that the world all but ignored during the busiest shopping time of the year. It's a good move on their part to show their cards, but it doesn't do anything to lessen the impact of a lackluster launch or the fact that for months their release list is incredibly barren. Not to mention that on the horizon there are two brand new consoles that Nintendo is scared to death of since MSFT/Sony currently own the hearts/minds of two groups Nintendo desperately covet - core gamers and third parties. Also the message in the article that Nintendo is far behind the curve is accurate. They're still behind where Microsoft and Sony were 8 years ago. That's awful.

back on topic: Nintendo is extending the MiiVerse to ios/android, and have released a pokedex app as well. Not sure what else Screen Digest could want them to do.

Yeah this is kind of the thing I'm starting to fight against. It is time to live in reality, where Nintendo will never do what the other machines do, and you can be miserable about it forever, or just come to terms with the fact that a Nintendo machine is its own kind of thing, and you either accept it for that or you don't buy it. Wishing it would turn into one of its competitors is like wishing a grizzly bear was a tractor.

Nintendo won´t get any good press with the current dudebro journos and pachters out there.. so they cut them out. Not only that, they are actually doing a better job with the Iwata asks. Obviously the last ND remindet some people about this..

So basically anything Nintendo does right now is going to get criticized, right? Well, other than announcing Super Super Mario Universe for release next month?

The Wii U has unified IDs and no friend codes, and the downloads are only paid for Wii U VC versions with enhanced functionality. I agree that 3DS needs to catch up and that NNID being tied to a single system is bogus.

I do, waiting for the $200.00 bomba...which is not too far in the future.

Being only slightly behind the Wii while the console market is experiencing a downturn is not the harbinger of a price drop, barring sales taking a huge tumble like they did on 3DS.
