I bet some extra shady spy business went down behind the scenes.
Like maybe terrorists have threatened to kill his wife if he doesn't resign, and it's up to a secret unit within the CIA to go undercover and sniff out the baddies.

Coming this fall to NBC!

I am going to hell am I?

Gee wizards. This is confusing.
-Had affair with Paula sometime during the making of this book
-Became director of CIA and she gained high level clearance
-Hanged out with him almost all the time
-gained access to his directors email account and gained classified documents
-Broke up with him three months ago due to him having an affair with another woman (?)
-Apparently the two women fought each other?
-Some one leaked this to the FBI

Did I get this all correct?

What? No.

Stepping down over affairs is a bullshit reason, to me. As long as the affair didn't interfere with missions/national security, it shouldn't matter to anyone besides him, his wife, the woman, and her husband. Same bullshit with Clinton, or Wiener. Fuck it. Does that change how you are doing your job? If not, no problem except in your own house.

Have you ever heard of blackmail?

Have you read this thread or all the news posts? This seems like more than a normal affair, and there is more juicy drama! haha

Why was Jolie up in there!! Page Pitt, page him now.

I don't blame him. He was away from home for years, had a hot very intelligent embedded reporter writing his biography. Would have been really tough not to have an affair in those circumstances.

Have a raging soft-on.

I can't blame him.

Not funny, She spent 37 years of her life with him, had his kids and at one point was beautiful when young. She does not deserve this, no one does. This lady could be your mom, a relative or a good friend of your family, some of you need to show some respect.

The other lady was a married woman too and should be ashamed of herself.

The FBI soon discovered that the emails were coming from Broadwell, which in turn led to the discovery that Broadwell was sending explicit emails to Petraeus, according to the officials.

At first, investigators were concerned that a stranger had somehow hacked into Petraeus’ email account, but then learned that his emailing her was consensual and indicative of an affair, they said.

One senior law enforcement official, who had been aware of the probe for several weeks, said the complaint to the FBI about Broadwell's behavior "raised concerns, and we had to check it out. It wasn't apparent at first what was going on."

So it seems that Broadwell was sending "harassing" emails to some woman anonymously, considering they say "the FBI discovered", as if the woman in question didn't know who the mails were from.

edit: update

http://www.washingtonpost.com/polit...7726e4-2b94-11e2-aaa5-ac786110c486_story.html

A senior U.S. military official says the author who had an affair with David Petraeus sent harassing emails to a woman who was the State Department’s liaison to the military’s Joint Special Operations Command.

The official says 37-year-old Jill Kelley in Tampa, Fla., received the emails from Petraeus biographer Paula Broadwell that triggered an FBI investigation.

Another person who knows Kelley and Petraeus confirmed their friendship and said she saw him often.

Maybe that woman was interfering in the affair, she might even have been the one who asked to contact congressional members about the affair. Maybe Broadwell heard of this and got pissed off at her.

This is exactly the kind of thing you keep locked down intentionally to prevent information leaks.

But that's the whole point of having classification. Presumably, the information exchange would be done with individuals with security clearance, but from different branches.

WASHINGTON — Lawmakers with authority over intelligence and national security expressed consternation on Sunday that the F.B.I. investigation that led to the resignation of David Petraeus as director of central intelligence could have been conducted without the knowledge of officials in the White House or Congress.

There wasn't as much shock this year, but there was definitely some awe. So said the area's best-known military leader.

"Awesome," Gen. David Petraeus said of his first Gasparilla parade.

Petraeus, who runs the U.S. Central Command from MacDill Air Force Base, and his wife, Holly, watched from the comfort of a big tent on Bayshore Boulevard. They were guests of surgeon Scott Kelley and his wife, Jill.

"You have to see it to believe it, even in the rain," said Petraeus, who spent the afternoon chatting candidly with two dozen guests, including state attorney general candidate Pam Bondi and Bern's Steak House owner David Laxer.

Security at Kelley's house was no joke, one paradegoer discovered, running after one zap of electricity from a guard's Taser.

Amazing the amount of information we're getting about this in the media from "anonymous" sources. Whilst I have no reason to doubt this story is true, it makes you wonder how much of the stuff written down in these articles came from the federal government. Journalists have no way to verify these details. Classified information and all that jazz

I still don't understand how this will impede him from testifying before Congress.

Committee says they will have him testify no matter what. Its all games at this point. Funny how the heads of both departments are either out of service now or too busy and soon to be leaving the department

It won't but you typically have the head of a dept. testify. They can subpeona him if they want to keep pushing this phony Benghazi story even after the election.

My guess is they guy just wants to lay low for a while. This is a huge fall and must be humiliating to him and his family.

Did Petraeus mistress reveal secret CIA prison?

During a question-and-answer session, Broadwell was asked about this year’s Sept. 11 attacks against the U.S. mission in Benghazi.

She stated: “Now I don’t know if a lot of you heard this, but the CIA annex had actually had taken a couple of Libya militia members prisoner. And they think that the attack on the consulate was an effort to try to get these prisoners back. So that’s still being vetted.”

The existence of a U.S. prison or CIA detention center in Benghazi would be a new development in the debate surrounding the attacks there. The information does not appear to be publicly known.

An extensive WND search of news media coverage of the Benghazi attacks could find no mention of prisoners being held at the CIA annex.

Ms. Kelley didn't know who sent the emails. Some appeared to be accusing her of an inappropriate relationship but didn't name Mr. Petraeus. Agents determined the emails were sent from an account shared by Ms. Broadwell and her husband, who live in North Carolina, the officials said.
But the agents spent weeks piecing together who may have sent them. They used metadata footprints left by the emails to determine what locations they were sent from. They matched the places, including hotels, where Ms. Broadwell was during the times the emails were sent.
FBI agents and federal prosecutors used the information as probable cause to seek a warrant to monitor Ms. Broadwell's email accounts.
They learned that Ms. Broadwell and Mr. Petraeus had set up private Gmail accounts to use for their communications, which included explicit details of a sexual nature, according to U.S. officials. But because Mr. Petraeus used a pseudonym, agents doing the monitoring didn't immediately uncover that he was the one communicating with Ms. Broadwell.

And in return, she got to marry a fucking five star general and the CIA director. I'd say that's a fair trade, especially looking how she looks.

Watching CNN, apparently Broadwell broke it off with Petraeus. But Petraeus continued to pursue Broadwell, sending up to a thousand emails in a span of 3 months.

That is a vulnerable position to be in, especially for someone with his security clearance.
Wtf is this shit? You're a five star general and the head of the goddamn CIA. GET SOME NEW PUSSY

Omar Bradley was the last 5 star General.

That said the layers to the story are starting to conflict and not make sense. Supposedly they broke up. He's crazy stalker in email harassing her. If they broke up why is skanky chick emailing and harassing a family friend about sleeping with her man

This whole story is insane to me. Someone help me understand:

1.) Why "harassing" emails received by some social planner at a military base warrants FBI investigation. Anything below death threats seems unworthy of their resources (and even then, what is the national security value of this social planner anyway?).
2.) Why, when Broadwell was identified as the source of these emails, it was necessary to learn the identity of her lover. Seems totally orthogonal.

Yeah, it's weird. I'm guessing Petraeus was suspected of having an affair with Broadwell for good while, which is obviously a security concern. But all this other stuff has to be smoke and mirrors; a cover to draw attention away from the real reason why the FBI was investigating the CIA chief (come on, let's think about how fucked up that is.) The current story line is that the FBI kinda just.... through pure happenstance... stumbled into investigating the CIA director. That doesn't really hold water.

I'm guessing the deputy CIA director and other top brass within the agency knew the FBI was investigating him, and the FBI were likely given clearances to do so. I have a hard time believing it was for the affair alone, but I guess it's possible.

I have seen the possibility of blackmail or security breach being concerns over this affair, but does that hold up? What if Petraeus were single and banging people left and right, how would the potential for blackmail/breach be any different? This whole scandal is fishy.

The thing I don't get: If you're going to cheat, why not just get a divorce? Especially in this man's position. A divorce really wouldn't have affected his work life, would it?

Some say he was poised to run for office in 2016.

Divorce would run counter to his straight arrow image.

Never was a fan of Petraeus. I acknowledge his many accomplishments but dislike much of the praise heaped on him. He was his own best spin-doctor.

He wrote the manual and has been called the 'high priest' of COIN. It's a situation where the author of the strategy gets to implement the strategy in the field and then reports to Congress on the success of his strategy. "Everything is going great and my plan is working brilliantly!" It's one-stop shopping. You get to write your own report card. That never sat well with me and COIN has not really proven to do anything it set out to do. He gets much credit for the surge but evidence points to the fact that Iraqis themselves stopped protecting Al Qaeda once they became too barbaric.

I also dislike the growing habit of an Army general to appeal directly to the people, as he did during media tours and interviews. He became a celebrity, raising support for military operations such as the surge. It was never suppost to work that way.

It is not surprising at all that a man like this fell for a groupie who lionized him and even wrote up a tongue-bath of a biography. Having read about him throughout the years you could see that he was vulnerable in this regard.

It's how Washington works, everything is political.

Every legitimate journalist has sources at varying levels of the bureaucratic, political, and military systems. They try not to publish anything without having corroborating stories from sources that would seemingly be independent of each other.

When a story like this breaks everyone is going to have axes to grind as well, whether they are pro Petraeus, anti Petraeus, trying to get better relations with the paper for future endeavors, trying to embarrass someone, etc.

Hell, the only reason Nixon got busted is because Mark Felt didn't become the FBI Director.

Torture, drone strikes, giving the finger to the constitutional, overthrowing governments... but it's the poom poom that'll get you fired lol, gotta love America and its principles.

...because if you're single, nobody can blackmail you by threatening to tell your wife you're sleeping around?

A CIA director committing adultery is a text book example of a security risk.

Here's a few thoughts from Micheal Hastings, the journalist who blew the lid off General McCrystal's leadership style which in turned got him fired.

More so than any other leading military figure, Petraeus’ entire philosophy has been based on hiding the truth, on deception, on building a false image. “Perception” is key, he wrote in his 1987 Princeton dissertation: "What policymakers believe to have taken place in any particular case is what matters — more than what actually occurred."

Yes, it’s not what actually happens that matters — it’s what you can convince the public it thinks happened.

Do you think American Army Generals should be partisan, or should they serve their country honorably and not get involved in politics?

Or that, in 2004, during the middle of a presidential election, Petraeus wrote an op-ed in The Washington Post supporting President Bush and saying that the Iraq policy was working. The policy wasn’t working, but Bush repaid the general’s political advocacy by giving him the top job in the war three years later.

Sometimes results trump methods but what about stealing the credit? Keep in mind the first quote box I put out from the article.

On his final Iraq tour, during the so-called "surge," he pulled off what is perhaps the most impressive con job in recent American history. He convinced the entire Washington establishment that we won the war.

He did it by papering over what the surge actually was: We took the Shiites' side in a civil war, armed them to the teeth, and suckered the Sunnis into thinking we’d help them out too. It was a brutal enterprise — over 800 Americans died during the surge, while hundreds of thousands of Iraqis lost their lives during a sectarian conflict that Petraeus’ policies fueled.

Yeah he could have become (and may yet become) a President... Or maybe America dodged yet another bullet when it comes to questionable leadership.
