Steam's Big Picture Mode beta starts Monday Sep 10th [out now]

Definitely should get Joy2Key/Xpadder-esque thing built in.

Also, how do you think the splitscreen would work? Maybe it is able to divvy up the screen automatically between two players, and just renders the game twice? I doubt that would work though so it's probably a much more simple solution.

Dota 2 controller method could be feasible. Left stick directly steers your hero, right stick toggles between targets. Face buttons automatically assigned to spells, triggers are items. Maybe it would work out because although controller players could move more efficiently, they couldn't target as quickly as a mouse player (pretty much the same as in shooters, actually), but it would probably require separate matchmaking to be really fair, and since that never materialized in CS:GO I doubt they'd even bother implementing controller support.

God damn you Totaka

I'm going to add XBMC to the app list on Steam. I'll be able to play games. Browse and watch movies all from my gamepad. It's going to awesome.

i think what valve/someone needs to do now is to make like a Cat5 orlan box for streaming hdmi/usb over your electric sockets. would be waay cheaper and hassle-free than making another htpc or whatever.

Oh darn it's coming to Windows first and OS X later. Oh well I guess I'll fire up Boot Camp and catch up on some Witchering.

Since we're talking about steam, does anyone know if you can do steam voice chat the official xbox microphone plugged into a wired xbox controller? Does the computer recognize there is a microphone?

You can use your xbox mic with your PC, yeah.

(you absolutely should not do this though, out of respect for your ears, and the ears of those whom you play with)

I -think- the official headset (it has a weird small plug, not a normal headphone jack) works with Windows by default. Haha at TouchMyBox, already beaten.

I use a wireless controller but I assume it's the same, yes you can. It recognizes it.

Fuck.

That daisywheel keyboard is pretty cool, can't belive MS havn't done somthing like that.

Infact they have recently made it worse to type stuff with controllers in their apps.

I don't know...maybe got a screwed up one? I couldn't go more than like 10ft from the dongle before the signal dropped =\

Well, I always use it right in front of my laptop, so I guess I can't speak from the experience of trying to get further away. All this Big Picture talk has made me realize i have an HDMI output on this Asus gaming laptop, though, and I don't see any reason why I shouldn't hook this thing up in my living room and start playing the superior PC versions of these games in my living room.

It works, a friend of mine uses it because his other headset broke.
It sounds horrible, but he doesn't want to buy a new headset.

Fuck.

Ha, thanks guys. I ask because when I play with some friends they use headsets that pick up too much volume coming out of the speakers. When I play xbox I rarely hear the sound coming out of the tv.

What is this blasphemy about using a standalone mic with TV speakers. Are these the people where you can hear the echo delay of your own voice played out of their speakers and then fed back through their mic? Gahhh...

Is there a better sounding headset that would work both with Steam and with the 360 then that isn't the default headset? Preferably something that doesn't break the bank?

I'm still debating if I should link XBMC in Steam or link Steam or just the games in XBMC... I can't tell which is the better way to go.

I'm going to have Steam at the core, then launch XBMC and HyperSpin (it's better for emulators) though Steam.

does this mean i will be able to play MW3 with a pad now?
If the game supported game pads in the first place, then yes. This won't magically add gamepad support to games which don't support it, however.

Yup I use the Xbox one for pc and have my 5.1 surround going as well and no complaints from people about sound.

I know this has been answered, but to expand on it. My friends and I all use our normal 360 headsets and they work great. We all use Mumble though, because in Steam there is no way to tell it to send only voices to the headset and sound to the speakers like on the 360. You can do this with Mumble so people don't hear themselves coming out of your speakers. After big picture mode, this is pretty much the only thing left I wish they would add to Steam.

One thing they need is to somehow recognize keyboard typing in game or add the lotus typing to steamworks so I don't have to switch to keyboard when something needs to be typed in game. In some games when you make your profile you add a name and it needs typed in for example.

Steam needs a native xpadder type thing built in...that would be cool.

I think the worries about killing proper split screen are completely valid. When it's built into the platform it's going to push devs away from having a proper splitscreen that you can play with one copy. Even games now like Orcs Must Die 2 which trumpet their co-op aspect fails to mention that there is no actual offline multiplayer (Which is why i'll be picking it up when it gets dirt cheap instead of buying it when it launched). The only splitscreen I've been able to use in the last long while is Dungeon defenders. Even the split screen in Valve titles that is readily available on the console ports is hid behind the developer console which for the vast majority of gamers makes it impossible to get to. If Valve isn't supporting offline multiplayer how can we expect anyone else to?

If I can get it so that the windows media button on my XBMC control opens XBMC while my paired six-axis to my HTPC pulls up the steam client that would be the most beautiful thing in the world.

Will this fix the tiny text problem that some games have?

I don't believe this is going to fix anything in game.

With that said, I've always had a problem with games that require me to enter a serial code on my first play. The Steam overlay with the code is tiny on my 47". I assume that will be fixed.

yes.
What it does, is completely dedicate one of your bluetooth emitters to the controller, so it's best to go buy a separate dongle for the ps3 controller.

Also, you've got to make sure it's on and connected before starting games, or a lot of times the game wont recognise it until you restart said game.

Works flawlessly when I use it, but now I usually use a 360 controller because it's a bit less hassle.
To further clarify: you DO NOT need to enable the 360 pad emulation in motiinjoy prior to starting the game. You can do this even after you start a game. I've helped sevral gaffers set theirs up. I use mine with bluetooth and it works flawlessly.

At this point I'm more pissed at Sony and Microsoft for not being proactive enough to preserve splitscreen on consoles, to the point where they had no problem releasing several games that didn't support local multiplayer at all. Consoles are where local multiplayer is most famous for, I think they're the ones to blame for the general industry not caring about local multiplayer at all.

At least with Valve they've always been PC developers, and the PC was never famous for splitscreen multiplayer.

Er.... Have you not be following the thread?
You're missing his point.

Xpadder allows you to work all kinds of magic in getting games with zero gamepad support to work with them seamlessly.

A built-in feature for this that let you navigate menus with a controller as normal, then automatically loaded the appropriate gamepad profile when you launched a game (and reset on exiting the game) would be... well. I'd pay for it.

Steam needs integrated ability for online streaming of games [twitch style]. Pres a button, and everyone can spectate your game session.

This drives me nuts, along with people who don't use push to talk, and you constantly hear speaker feedback/weird vibrating noises/dogs barking/cars driving past/heavy machinery in the background. =P

So I hear that Big Picture Mode won't work on XP. I'm glad i'm on W7.

I'd totally recommend the wired PC 360 controller. It's only like $30-$40 depending where you go. The wireless one is terrible from my experience. I constantly lost signals and it has some issues with certain games.

I have had a completely different experience. Nothing but great connectivity (even with 3+ controllers connected at the same time). Just as a counter point to your post.

I hear there are a lot of fake wireless adapters that exhibit these issues.

Why is that? I know the UI is built for controllers...I'm talking about games that do not support gamepads. Instead of using some 3rd party application...have something built right in.

Oh I see. Yes. I agree. That would be awesome of that level of functionality was included.

Yeah, it's possible I got a screwed up one but I'm sure it wasn't fake unless bestbuy sells knock offs. It had all the MS certified stuff on it.
