It seems Nagoshi has gotten quite a promotion.

Yakuza and Super Monkey Ball creator Toshihiro Nagoshi has been promoted to chief creative officer at Sega. Nagoshi, 46, was previously senior creative officer and general manager of Sega's R&D Division 3. Well maybe his expertise in making good games will trickle down into the type of projects sega takes on in the future. Personaly, I think this has been has an excellent gen for them, with quite a few flashes of brilliance. Someone like that on the board, long as he has the business acumen to match, should ensure this only continues at a faster pace

he created truly big brands for sega in the past - it should be a good thing and he may be able to give sega some vision for the future.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Pretty much the only person left at Sega worth a damn.

On the one hand, i want him with his new powers, to initiate a new Daytona and F-Zero.
On the other, i want him to actually make them himself.
And in reality, none of the above will happen :(

I don't think SEGA gets enough credit these days. People keep treating them like they're some terrible company, when I find they are one of the only big studios that creates surprise hits anymore. They take risks and make concepts that shouldn't work actually work. I don't even know what most people have against them besides that they made some pretty awful games 6 or so years ago.

But congrats, hope this goes over well for him and the company.

Hey, hey, Virtua Fighter subteam.

They're on new projects these days.

Surprisingly, Future Stars does have some connections to those AM2 titles of old. Osaki says that the technology used for Mirai, and for the special Miku videos they make for live concerts, all comes from Virtua Fighter. Things like the creation of the PVs, the simulation for Miku's hair -- the basics, and the staff making them, are from Virtua Fighter.

Good news,
Now he needs to pressure Nintendo into a new F-Zero partnership!
Something something Nagoshiation.
Now that he's on the board he'll be summoned to the emergency meeting when terrorists threaten the release of the next Mario and Sonic at the Olympics game, and he can say, "Gentlemen, we do not Nagoshiate with terrorists."

It's the opposite I think. The tanning makes him look old and somewhat withered.

But good for him. He and the Valkyria team are the only good thing about SEGAs internal studios.

Congrats to Nagoshi. Yakuza is one of my favourite series ever and hopefully this will open up more funds for the Yakuza team.

Only people who should think Sega sucks would be sonic fans. When Sega was still into hardware I didn't care much for them (young enough to have console loyalty) but they consistently create innovative games. Wish I had realized this sooner.

I wonder what Nagoshi's promotion will mean for Sega though. I enjoy his Yakuza/black panther stuff but can't say the series has taken much risk.

Binary Domain was their big risk, and I feel like the, probably not great sales of that will ruin any chances they're allowed to take from here on out.

Hopefully, he brings back a sense of identity to the various teams at SEGA. They really seemed to be in a creative renaissance when the divisions all had their own unique branding that was on display front and center in their games (Hitmaker, WOW, Smilebit, UGA, Overworks, Sega Rosso, etc.), I definitely get the feeling that that structure gave the devs a much stronger sense of ownership of their games.

Once they were all folded back into a bunch of faceless AM teams, that individuality and air of friendly competition really feels like it took a big punch to the gut.

I see what you mean but for me, aping western trends with a zombie game and then a shooter isn't really the kind of risk I was thinking of.

Pretty much the only person left at Sega worth a damn.

only if Ryutaro Nonaka really has left, oh wait, no Satoshi Sakai is a super awesome guy too

typical of sega though, Nagoshi has been behind so much awesome stuff and they kinda ignored him, he makes Bomba Domain and gets promotions, maybe they're pre-emptively expecting huge sales for Yakuza 5, I am.

Maybe this puts him in the position of approving great concepts or halting projects going down the wrong path. But I always hate to see great designers behind a desk. Hopefully he'll be able to work close with designers/producers.

Love SEGA these days, they have also silently built a smart western portfolio with their aquisitions (Creative Assembly, Sports Interactive).

he's on a roll, yakuza seies has been consistently great to me, and his recent new ip is looking stellar, good on the tanned man.
