GOG News and Updates 2011

I think there've been three this year; two limited (Broken Sword and the upcoming Empire Earth) and one new game added to the catalogue that was free (Dragonsphere). There's generally one around Christmas, but the other decisions seem to be somewhat sporadic, except possibly for being around when they want to celebrate something.

December 2009 it was Tex Murphy 1+2 (or alternate title if you already owned it) for free as their Christmas gift to the unwashed Dickensian masses. I kind of wish they would just auto-add it to accounts or send email codes that last longer than the two days they have usually had the gifts available.

I was gone and missed the gift of Tex. :(

Gothic 3 released today, not sure where I stand on this one.

Without the Community Patch, Gothic 3 is a disappointment, mainly due to the design being unable to match Piranha Bytes' ambition.

With the patch, however, the game is enjoyable, even if it isn't as great as Gothic 2. Certainly recommended if one is a fan of open-world RPG games. In fact, the world feels more alive and reactive (your actions can have an actual effect on a settlement's future) compared to the worlds in recent Bethesda games. And since it is a Piranha Bytes game, the exploration can feel dangerous, especially when you run into beasts.

Besides, the game can be a real looker on cranking up the settings/sgssaa, thanks to some gorgeous lighting.

What's the best first-person, turn-based RPG on GOG? I want something like Wizardry 7, but W7 isn't on GOG. I've been playing Land of Lore 1, but it's not quite turning my crank. I need more stats.

My automatic answer to that question is Lands of Lore, but you've gone and put a kibosh on that one!

Probably Might and Magic (at least, the best ones of the series; the ranking a few posts up would be a reasonable benchmark). That said I'd also throw in a small mention for Realms of Arkania, since if you're explicitly after *complexity*, those might be a better bet.

Small further suggestion: The Ultima titles prior to 6 have first-person dungeons, although the overworld is top-down. Possibly close enough to what you're after (and you can at least try 4 for free)

Is Broken Sword 4 worth getting? I have it in my wishlist only because I have the first 3.
I can't really recommend it. It wasn't a bad adventure game per se but it didn't feel like a Broken Sword game at all, story didn't make much sense / was sloppy, and graphics look awful. Buy it to support Revolution but don't play it! :jnc

Today's Gem promo is Slipstream 5000, and they make a point of indicating that it's 60% off, so cheaper than the upcoming holiday discount.

I recall playing a demo of the game and vaguely liking it, but I'm not sure how it holds up. It's at least somewhat original - race game where you fly down a tube.

The Witcher 2 sale has begun - $23.99 with free The Witcher 1.

Nice, shintoki should hopefully start the holiday sale thread soon, but in the meantime I've updated the title.

Looks like if you already own TW1, you can get a gift code for it (either by contacting support, or simply by adding TW2 + TW1 to your cart both as gifts, and redeeming TW2 for yourself).

No mention of europeans getting any gog credit?
I know that europeans got 16$ back when buying The Witcher 2 at full price on gog.

Can't you also just change your region in your account (like they introduced to bypass TW2's slight censorship / uneven pricing) or is it not that simple? This post seems to make it sound it's ~£15.

Normally they charge europeans in dollars but The Witcher 2 was in € for some reason and they gave everyone who bought it 16$ in gog credits to make up for the difference. The Witcher 2 seems to be in dollars now so I'm guessing that europeans don't get any credit.

In my mind the GOG versions of The Witcher games are the definitive versions. You'd be a fool to pass up on these two amazing games for whatever reason.

I'd disagree if the Steam version of The Witcher 2 actually supported cloud saves like CDPR said it would before launch.

(but I guess I disagree anyway since I like stupid achievements and stuff!)

When something is called a "definitive version" it generally implies that it has the most complete package of content available. DRM doesn't usually factor into that.

That's not to discount the value of the GOG version being DRM-free, because it is fantastic and they need to get more credit for doing it, but it just doesn't typically factor into someone's analysis of what makes a "definitive" version.

Is there something inherently different compared to the Steam version or even the retail version?

- You're providing all the money directly to the people who made it for one.
- No DRM at all (though that was patched out of retail) and no need to have any external clients running (Steam etc...)

Is there any difference content-wise between the GOG Witcher 2 and the Steam Premium Edition Witcher 2?

Not that I can think of...

TW2 from GOG has a lot of amazing goodies. Plus you support them directly as mentioned. Free copy of TW1 as well, what a damn deal if you ask me.

-EDIT: Nevermind.

I don't believe so. I think the GOG version had some extra art or soundtrack type stuff but I'm probably wrong on that.

Just bought The Witcher 2 and I can confirm that you don't get any gog credit.
I already own The Witcher on steam and I tried to gift them to myself and only redeem the second game so I could gift the first game to a friend but it seems like you have to redeem both of them.

Well there is no DRM so you could just "gift" it anyway. If you have it on Steam and don't install the GOG version, I don't see any problem.

Hey, what are the chances that GoG gets the Discworld games someday? I saw a review the other day for Discworld 2 at adventuregamers and it made me want to play it but I looked around and none of the digital services sell the old games. Seems like it'd be great for the service.

Licensed things are always going to be a little bit tricky, it depends on exactly how the license was negotiated. I do recall hearing that the folks from Perfect 10 have given the source code to the first two titles to the SCUMMVM people to hack around with, so it's not impossible that *some* solution be put together in the future.

Been playing Ultima 7 and man it was better then I remembered. Didn't remember the game was this hard tho. I hope we will see Ultima 8 and 9 too, not good as rest of the games but I'm in mood for Ultima.

Okay, I think I have a good strategy to get a code in the rush... Which I will reveal if it works for me... -_^

The post was 22 hours ago saying there would be more in 4 hours.
This is so confusing.
They got it ready then before they revealed it. They will post more at 15 GMT, and presumably continue this practice through the weekend.

Hmmmm... They also say that it will be for a variety of games, so I guess I missed Master of Orion?

Edit: I do like how they are doing all these giveaways before the big sale, so you have a chance to win stuff you'd like as it comes up before deliberating on which to buy.

I like reading the angry comments from people who didn't get a code for a free $6 game. If they really wanted to play these old games isn't that probably a price point they'd be willing to accept?

Seriously, I'm the poorest mofo and I'll at least be grabbing one game off GOG, or two if the ones I want are included in the 50% off sale. If they have no money at all, maybe they shouldn't be spending their time playing games, lol. Yet even if they were pricey, it's silly to get upset over missing a crapshoot chance for a gift. Entitlement mindset... tisk tisk...

Are they even still handing out codes?

This is so confusing.

The blog post is taken directly from the forum OT, which has been created 22hours ago, and been edited about an hour ago :)

Wow, I actually managed to redeem one of those Realms of Arkania codes before their servers went tits up. Don't know much about this one (was hoping for Master of Orion), but beggars can't be choosers, eh?

Managed to get Arkania. Since they repeated it, maybe they have more of MoO, which I would like even more. Their servers can't take the pressure of the frothing masses (this is the problem with quickdraw giveaways) and that server load probably isn't helped by the fact that redeeming it sends you through multiple pages.

This current contest (posting on twitter, Facebook, their forum) for a game is a MUCH better system than the "click here before a thousand other people do" form of internet contest. Good luck to all the gaffers that enter!

It's a game based on the (well, here, at least) famous 'Das Schwarze Auge' Pen and Paper series. Part 2 and 3 are freaking amazing, both feature great storylines and hard puzzles and fights (Also, the music in 2 is phenomenal). Both combine the best of Pseudo-3D (or 3D, for part 3) RPG, long, epic travels with a great travel/resting system, and very tactical isometric fights. You have almost unlimited possibilities in terms of skilling, almost every skill from the PnP is of use here, even the non-combat ones (And we're talking about much more talents than other systems like D&D would offer). The first one is very good, too. Part 2 is in my Lifetime-PC Top Ten list easily.

That said, you probably need a bit of Fanboyism or be a Oldschool Tactics/RPG fan to like them nowadays. Try them out, if they click with you, you're in for a lot of fun :)

I just wanted to say, I fucking won.
'Congrats on winning a copy of Realms of Arkania I + II. Happy Holidays! '

Yeah, take that all those who stood in my way, I'm a fucking winner!
