GOG News and Updates 2011

I just realized Shogo has native 16:9 support. Sooooo tempted to get that now. I played that a loooong time ago and my computer wasn't really good enough.

I have a problem loading gog.com. This only happens with their site, no others. The page starts loading, but stalls on any of the static#.gog.com. it eventually times out, and I get an unformatted page with no css. If I disable my router firewall, it loads fine. No matter what device I use; windows, android, ios, etc.

Any ideas? I can't figure a way to exclude a specific from the firewall. Very frustrating.

Tempted to get Tropico Reloaded but I don't know how it plays. If it has short term objectives like Ceasar III that would be great. Speaking of which, they really need to get Pharaoh/Cleopatra and Zeus/Poseidon. They were such cool spins on the C3 concept.

For those who can't stand Ultima VII (eye-stabbing) font, I found a couple of alternatives here.

The first one is similar to the original one and changes capital letters only.

The second one is a full set (numbers, lower&upper case).

To install the fonts, open the folder where you installed the game (not Exult).
If the patch folder already exists, open it and create a copy of the file fonts.vga that may be present within it.
If the patch folder does not exist, create it.
Copy the downloaded fonts.vga in the patch folder.

And they also did an unboxing video for Serpent Isle, similar to the one they did for Darklands.

Nice summary. The unfortunate thing is that likely means we're down to the final week now, with just 1 or 2 releases left for the year.

Woohoo, I can't wait for the sale to start. may drop more money there than at the inevitable Steam sale. A sjort look at my wishlist shows that I will hardly be able to spend less than 40$.
The thought of playing Ultima 7 over the holidays sounds better every minute...

Nice!
I'll get The Witcher 2 and some other games depending on which games are on sale.

Going to wait until Witcher 2 is way, way lower from them... because I'd just be buying it for a digital backup and the artbook PDF. Plus I already got Witcher 1 for the exact same reasons.

Yeah, I think GOG will get more money from me then Steam during their sales. There's a lot I've been holding off on.

My EA wishlist:
Crusader: No Remorse
Crusader: No Regret
Dungeon Keeper 2
Nox
Lands of Lore 1+2
Starflight 1+2
Ultima 1+2+3
Ultima 4+5+6
Ultima 7
Wing Commander Privateer
Wing Commander 1+2
Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger
Populous 2: Trials of the Olympian Gods
SimCity 2000 Special Edition

Not to mention...

Gabriel Knight
Gabriel Knight 2
The Last Express
Might and Magic 7: For Blood and Honor
Might and Magic 8: Day of the Destroyer
Panzer General 2
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six
Star Control 1+2
Swat 3: Tactical GOTY Edition
Settlers 2: The Gold Edition
Caesar 3
Jagged Alliance 2
Little Big Adventure (Relentless: Twinsen's Adventure)
Little Big Adventure 2 (Twinsen's Odyssey)

So many fantastic titles to choose from. Wish the GOG Holiday sales got more respect and hype compared to the Steam Holiday sales.

Definitely getting the Wing Commander games during the half off sale.

Is Broken Sword 4 worth getting? I have it in my wishlist only because I have the first 3.

Fortunately, that sale hits early enough that I can take advantage of it for Christmas shopping, too. Trying to gently nudge my Dad towards GoG, and since he asked for Myst this Christmas I thought I'd take advantage of that.

I wonder if I can create a gift version of that Empire Earth during the free period...

Gothic 3 released today, not sure where I stand on this one. You don't have the Forsaken Gods "expansion," but there is still the community patch to patch stuff up. I know it's no Gothic 2, but if people want to recommend it, go ahead.

Mind if I put up a thread for GoG's Holiday Sale? I can't do photoshop, but I'll list everything out

Feel free, it's not like this thread is loaded up with banners and artwork. I'd say start it on the 8th when The Witcher 2 goes on sale, and let people know what's planned. Dunno if you need to list out everything if the whole catalog is just 50% though :p

The original news post suggests it's not *quite* everything:

Also, starting on Monday at 11.00 GMT, GOG.com is adding virtually every single game in our catalog for 50% off from now until 2 January 2012.

Presumably The Witcher 2 is exempt (from *that* deal, at least; there's the earlier one, of course!), but there may be more. I wonder if it's just worth listing those that aren't? :-)

Wow, amazing. I was waiting with buying The Witcher 1&2, but now i dont have an excuse.
I'll pay 107 PLN for both [i could get it cheaper in Polish retail, but w/e ;p], and i'll get 16$ for other games on GoG? I'm all for it :)

What a pity that gog doesnt have expansion pack for Alpha Centauri ;\, but i'll find ways to spend those 16$ :)

For some, yes. For me the worst part is M&M7. Best one is, as always, World of Xeen and Mandate of Heaven on 2nd place.

M&M9 is better than M&M7. It's pretty good to be honest.

M&M is so good and forgotten series. I loved 6 and 7, exploration aspect was close to elder scrolls series and making notes of the map about locations You have visited was awesome [thanks god, they added that in 7 xD, in 6 i had to use pen and paper all the time ;]

M&M series are timeless classics. On par with Wizardry and Ultima for me.

I finished them all and if I were to rate them:

M&M4+5 (World of Xeen) > M&M6: Mandate of Heaven > M&M3: Isles of Terra > M&M8 = M&M9 > M&M7 > M&M2 > M&M1

It seems those games were immensively more popular in Europe than in the US.

Long live New World Computing and Jon Van Caneghem!

Gothic 3 released today, not sure where I stand on this one.
I recommend it! It's still kind of janky in true Piranha Bytes style (mostly down to performance weirdness) but with the latest community fixes it's pretty great. It's way more ambitious than Risen. Still not as good as Gothic 2 Gold but it looks much better for what it's worth. Forsaken Gods is standalone, it wasn't developed by Piranha Bytes and it's full of recycled content, so it's not a huge omission.

Well, Forsaken Gods was reworked in the Forsaken Gods Enhanced Edition, and some of the people who made the community patch for Gothic 3 formed a company (Mad Vulture Games) and were hired and fixed up Forsaken Gods... so in a kinda twisted, indirect way, getting the Forsaken Gods EE + Gothic 3 which isn't part of this release is supporting the efforts of the people who worked on the community patch. Even if they're not seeing any money per sale of Forsaken Gods EE, perhaps JoWood is getting the message their talents and changes/fixes they made are appreciated.

How often does Good Old Games give away free titles? I only have like... Ultima and the other free games and seemed to have missed out on that one limited time one earlier this year (forgetting the name). They don't really e-mail about their free giveaways. :/

Jowood closed up shop.

Crap, forgot about that, the 2011 date of the EE threw me off. Well, never give up hope! Maybe Nordic Games cares, a tiny, tiny bit.

Not too often, just a couple times a year. Broken Sword was made temporarily free in celebration of getting 6 million downloaded games, and they had another one last holiday season too I think. They don't release permanently free games too often either, but paid games going free is even rarer than that.

I think there've been three this year; two limited (Broken Sword and the upcoming Empire Earth) and one new game added to the catalogue that was free (Dragonsphere). There's generally one around Christmas, but the other decisions seem to be somewhat sporadic, except possibly for being around when they want to celebrate something.

I know. It's like they expect you to do something for it.

If they were going to go ahead and email everyone about the free game they're giving away, they might as well just automatically add it to the account at that point. But it's not about making sure you get a free game. They don't advertise so much because they want you to get into the habit of checking in on the site occasionally and noticing there is a new, old game you've been dying to play.

Having said that, I don't follow the site as closely as some here, yet I believe I've managed to get every free game they've offered.

What's the best first-person, turn-based RPG on GOG? I want something like Wizardry 7, but W7 isn't on GOG. I've been playing Land of Lore 1, but it's not quite turning my crank. I need more stats.

If you are looking for stats, Realms of Arkania games have lots of them (and some weird ones, like Superstition or Necrophobia).

Explains it. Never know what is going on since they never give a heads up and there is no "for free!" thread like there generally is for stuff like Steam sales.

Betrayal at Krondor (the original) is very awesome too, if you get in to it. Not really in the same style as W7, since the battles are done on a separate screen setup on grid like a sRPG (but much smaller scale), but still a first-person, turn-based RPG. I find the graphics kinda charming, despite the archaic 3D used to display the world and live-action captured video/animation. There's also a pretty big emphasis on the story too, with pages of text between chapters, like a book.

GOG does post them as news items, so if you have GOG in your RSS reader, you'd see it. We also try to make new threads for bigger news now, like Broken Sword going free had its own thread, and the free give away coming up will be mentioned in the title of the GOG holiday sale thread while it is free, at the very least.

Well I think the point is they want you to keep checking their website. I subscribe to gog's RSS feed on Google Reader and am always informed of everything that's happening on gog.

I just follow this thread, haven't missed a free game or sale yet.
