Howdy sailors!
I sat my fat ass down last night and listed out all the games releasing between now (end of July) and Dec 31st and did a pondering on which ones I was going to get/how many I could reasonably have time for/actually afford
Obviously, no one has to go into detail like I am below, but it would be cool to see what everyone's kind of choosing to play and choosing to wait on as there are so many potentially high-quality games coming around.
To clarify, I probably will end up getting every game on this list, but I am more asking what everyone is gonna get day one.
Here's my top 5 -
Control Resonant
The first one delved into a favorite subgenre of mine head first - New Weird - and gave me a world, level design and combat system I mostly loved with lore I devoured like delicious slice of chocolate cake.
I think all the changes they've shown - melee combat, the variety in building Dylan out in an ARPG manner, the examples world and scope but keeping that wonderful New Weird genre tone…it's definitely my most wanted game.
Mortal Shell 2
Despite its issues, I quite enjoyed the first game. It definitely felt like the studio had a lot of potential to build on ideas and mechanics if they made a sequel. Lo and behold a year ago, they announced one was coming, and it looked great, but kind of went under the radar until a few weeks ago for me. The open beta/demo came out and a bunch of Youtubers. I trust regarding souls like games have done nothing but raved about it and how it's a massive step up. After watching a fair amount of hands-on with the demo, it quickly shot up my list as it looks like a massive improvement in every possible vector.
Wolverine
I'm cautiously optimistic about this one. I think insomniac, without a doubt, knows how to make fun games. I truly believe they're going to have an interesting story to tell with the character and a good base for the gameplay. But, and this isn't implying it needs to be open world or bigger than it should be, I almost get the feeling like the game is going to feel Short changed or not have enough meat on its bones? I don't have anything to verify that Theory, except the gameplay we have seen, which is very little feels like something is missing, and I can't quite put my finger on it, but, insomniac has created fun to play Spider-Man games, even if their social and political statements are too blatant and obnoxious for me sometimes
.
Castlevania Belmonts Curse
Evil twin and Castlevania. Enough said.
The previews from couple weeks ago looked stellar. Metroidvania's are my top genre and this looks like a wonderful and modern return to its Metroidvania roots with plenty to bring it into the Hollow Knight-ification of the genre. And only 30 bucks at launch!
Silver Pines.
Metroidvania meets Survival Horror. Two genres that have always flirt in certain ways, but this game is mashing them together blatantly and I'm super excited for it! There was a demo back in June on PC, which I don't play PC but I watched enough hands-on to know that this game has a lot of potential to be something really special for stalwarts of that genre.
Honorable mentions/Maybes
Phantom Blade Zero
There is almost 100% chance this one ends up getting purchased. Everything I've seen about it looks incredible, the things I have read about it in regards to its world, design and exploration and variety of weapons and combat options has me pretty excited. I just look at the other games releasing that I put in my top five and had to make a decision so this one was dropped to six place, but I'll probably scrounge in my couch cushions for a way to pick it up even though I won't have time to play it
Silent Hill Townfall
I would've actually put this one above Wolverine, but I feel like I don't have a sense of it enough beyond it feeling like a generic first person horror game right now. I feel there's a personality missing from what I've seen…I think the team doing it has a lot of love and reverence for creating a silent Hill game based on the interviews, and their Untold Stories title was great. I feel like personally I need to see a little more to know if it's something I wanna get day one, or wait for a sale.
Beast of Reincarnation
The previews they've been doing the last couple of months have really ticked my interest up. I am curious to see how it reviews and how much meat is on the game's bones; how it keeps its whole loop going and is it fun for, I think I read the game is around 40 hours? The combat, the world and the fact that it's not an overly massive open open world have me very interested.
Sinking City 2
The first game, despite its mini shortcomings, was a really wonderful diamond in the rough. The sequel strips away the open world, detective focus and rows it into a more semi world/Metroid Vania like survival horror game with a lot more optional detective work that is supposed to be rewarding, but not mandatory. The previews that hit a few months back seemed promising, but not glowing. I want to support the developers because I truly loved the first one and a few of their Sherlock titles. It'll be interesting to see how this one reviews.
Onimusha
I was really excited about this one as it was one of my favorites growing up in and the PS2 era. But, after seeing some more gameplay reveals the last couple of weeks and playing the demo… I actually felt less interested after doing so. I want to see the consensus on this one and how it all shakes out with level design and the full depth of gameplay.
