Ontario wildfires surround a train

Good idea to get a dedicated HEPA air purifier. They're not expensive.
You reminded about this, thanks. I kept one constantly during wildfire seasons in California but I haven't had too since I moved back - but it wouldn't kill me to have one at the ready to avoid the mad rush.

The reality is that there's not that many people living in Canada, and especially there are very few people living in the north. I don't think we have enough resources to be able to totally control all these fires on our own, and we definitely can't address the root causes on our own. The rate at which these fires are happening is being accelerated by the world heating up. Whether or not we agree on the reasons why the world is heating up doesn't really matter. The numbers show that it's happening. Our politicians in North America need to start seriously addressing this instead of being cowards like they've been so far. Because it's going to take both of our countries to address the problem.

I don't usually agree with the American ambassador, but I agree with him on this:
July 15, 2026

Over 800 wildfires are burning across Canada, with the largest alone rivaling the size of Washington, D.C., sending heavy smoke across the country and into communities on both sides of the border. Canadians living near these fires are already facing hazardous air quality, and that same smoke is now settling over the United States, including my home state of Michigan. This is a shared challenge, and it demands a shared response.

I commend the outstanding cooperation between the United States and Canada as we confront these fires together. Our two governments are monitoring and sharing information in real time – coordination that reflects our partnership at its best.

I am also deeply grateful for the brave people on the front lines – the firefighting crews, law enforcement, and other public safety personnel battling these blazes, and the teams monitoring conditions around the clock to keep the public safe and informed. Their dedication and professionalism are protecting lives and communities. Our thoughts are also with those who have lost loved ones, been displaced, or evacuated due to these devastating fires.

This challenge knows no borders. The United States will continue to coordinate closely with Canada, just as we have for more than four decades of shared wildfire emergencies.

Who do you think is being dumb?

You serious ?

Smoke or fire does not follow frontier delimitations. Acting like Canada is deliberately causing fires to fuck with Americans is fucking dumb. As if we control the weather and wind

Let's crawl to daddy Trump to slap tariffs on smoke while we're at it 🤡

No, this is not "raking leaves" when most of northern Canada are Conifers and in the middle of fucking nowhere with barely any peoples living there.

Thank you. At least I know where you're coming from.

I'll second that guy's sentiment if not his method to say if there is anything you guys can do to avoid this from happening in the future, it'd be much appreciated.

Nobody is saying that, friend. The claim is that Canada is neglegting the things it can and should control - thinning, fuel reduction, prescribed burns, etc.

We've offered repeatedly to take the land off your hands if you can't manage it...

Every damn year. When will this end? Guess we need to wear masks for the rest of eternity. I had to dig mine out today.
I guess I should probably buy one, too, if Toronto's gonna become another Hong Kong in July. I think I only have leftover surgical masks, which are apparently useless against smoke :pie_thinking:.

We need to start having more fun with masks in this part of the world. They can be a fashion accessory while being practical imo.

And they say education in the US is in bad shape...

"The claim is that Canada is neglegting the things it can and should control - thinning, fuel reduction, prescribed burns, etc."

And that is done of course every fucking years, but do you have any concept of the scale?

And what is Canada's mere 41M peoples population map?

Oh so the complete opposite of the boreal forest. To the surprise of no one.

Canada's boreal forest is the largest remaining intact forest ecosystem on Earth. Thinning that? There's no fucking road infrastructures. It's some of the most remote places on the planet. Even with the resources, how much thinning? It's the fucking lungs of the earth, It's the largest terrestrial carbon sink, it stores twice as much carbon per acre as tropical rainforests. You're incommoded with a slight orange tint in the sky and you want to put the axe in the lungs?

Fucking hell I guess UK has figured it all out uh? Chop everything down in the past hundreds years and have shrubs.

Canada does thinning yearly near populated areas and strategic areas. The conspirationists even took a photo of such thinning and thought that Canada was setting fire to the forests uncontrollably

You can't realistically do much to thin the boreal forest, not at that kind of scale. USA cannot even do it with 300M+ more population and smaller forest areas. The entire population of Canada is roughly California's.

There will always be wildfires, lightning strikes (not PG&E power lines). Now the arctic is warming up faster than anywhere else on the planet.

Maybe we should remove as many cubic tons of potash exports to US farmers as the orange man wants to add to coal burning yearly. Get your shit together after all, you're top 3 responsible for this shift in temperatures, and in your own state up North too.

Threatening indexation because you'll have a temporary inconvenience while the USA has never demonstrated you can manage your own fucking shit? lol. Unhinged.
