Nintendo Could Eventually Give the Switch 2 Its Most-Wanted Upgrade OLED

It baffles me why on launch we don't get the OLED version. Why do we have to wait for different versions? Give me the flagship first then release whatever other version you want
That worked out so well for the Vita. I loved that little thing, but let's not pretend like Nintendo didn't just carry off the most successful system launch since the $99 Gameboy Advance. And honestly, the gripes about the screen the Switch 2 launched with are laughable.

Obviously there are going to upgrades and a lite version. The Switch 3 is probably at least 6 years away. So Nintendo needs to keep the hardware fresh somehow.

I don't touch my Switch 2 bc of the screen.

"Is the Switch 2 be getting the OLED treatment?"

This being acceptable publishing standards for Dualshockers should, alone, be enough to ban it as a source.

What the fuck happened to grammar in journalism?

Sorry, just venting...kind of a pet peeve of mine. Yes, I hope the Switch 2 is getting an OLED model, as I will most assuredly purchase it at prices that are not anally invasive.

Won't be holding my breath on that last point -_-

The way I see people drag on the screen confuses me. Mine is bright, clear and responsive.

If the OLED screen is only "upgrade" then I dont care, I play the portable that often yo care about having OLED screen.

I don't do the portable aspect so I don't need this but would likely double dip just because the Switch 2 is so cheap right now.

If the price ramps up then probably not.

120hz OLED screen may be expensive.

The current Switch 2 screen has latency when gaming sub 120fps which is why an OLED option would appeal to many.

What has this anything to do with what I said? If there's OLED, give me OLED. Nobody mentioned anything about how successful NS2 launch is ffs. Let's see when the OLED drop if you'll be the first to go get one or no

If that's all that matters to you then good for you. Sorry we're in 2026 and we love new tech after experiencing them

If a Switch 2 gets a pro-style update to go along with an OLED screen, I'd find it hard to resist. But if everything's the exact same with just a new OLED panel, I could definitely hold off. The only thing an OLED would have over this one is blacker blacks.

It might be bullshit but I thought I read speculation of an 120hz OLED with VRR support at that size wasn't currently available.

I am actually considering getting a second switch 2 before the price hikes. The price hike in September this year likely won't be the last.

But, they might release a switch 2 lite next year together with the new pokemon. Although they need a die shrink for that. Can the T239 even be shrunk to a smaller node? I read somewhere Samsung 10/8nm is a dead end node and to do a die shrink, they would have to redesign the floor plan.

Anyways, I also suspect a oled switch 2 won't be coming any time soon.Perhaps 2028 or 2029.

One thing is for sure, Nintendo loves their handheld revisions. Just look at the gameboy, ds and 3ds

Switch 2 screen is terrible for any action base game especially for anything where ghosting is a detriment so shooters, platformers, a lot of retro games and so on.

The latency on this screen is terrible. Color gamut is great though.

This thing doesn't need more RAM, it doesn't even need any real spec changes. All it needs are higher clocks, and those are achievable with an eventual shrink. Do not underestimate what even 4N's Nvidia node can bring to the table there.

Nintendo made the right call here. The goal at launch is market saturation, not selling the most premium model. An OLED screen would have increased the price, and the reality is most consumers either don't notice or don't care enough about OLED to pay extra for it. Getting millions of consoles into homes is the smarter long-term strategy. Besides, those that do care about OLED will double dip and Nintendo knows this.

And possibly as a replacement for the deferred/canceled/turned into S2, Switch Pro
Oh yeah? I have to say I never for one second thought there was going to be a Switch Pro lol despite the whole internet saying that.

It just didn't sound like Nintendo. I never saw the point either when the Switch was selling well. And when people weren't buying 1st party games for the specs.

But maybe it wasn't an urban myth.

The question is is a node shrink even possible?
There was a report Nintendo initially considered 5nm but went with 8nm because it was cheaper...I'm assuming it wouldn't be that difficult to get to 5nm? It would be pretty poor planning by Nintendo if they were stuck on 8nm because then they couldn't really do mid-cycle refreshes with a Switch 2 Lite or even Pro models.

Didn't it turn out that Nintendo went with 8nm for Switch 2 in the end, as opposed to the heavily rumored 5nm?

Seems likely they'll do the exact same thing as with Switch (1) (which went from using 20nm in 2017 to 16nm in 2019) and just silently replace the base SKU with a new one using a smaller chip.

They want people to buy the system twice so you can have the better improved OLED. Nintendo is the greediest company in the videogame industry. Well, at least for now but Sony is sure gaining ground quickly.
