What's your backup for electricity, Internet.

Major thunderstorms these days, Generac I'd need a new gas line. Internet I am lucky to have a 5G phone with Wi-Fi hotspot. Help?
 
I could easily go a couple of days without electricity and I'd be fine. I bought a few ips battery backup power strips when they were cheap and hooked one up to the refrigerator, the modem, and the router. The fridge lasts about 24 hours while the modem and the router each go for a couple of days. Other than that, I have one of those little power bricks for my phone and I'm good. If all else fails, it's nice to take some time and read using a battery powered LED lantern.
 
Mobile with 5G, when it can be bothered to connect
Rechargeable lamp, Torch and speakers
and the good old candles, which were used a lot when i was a kid.
 
Generator which I can hook up to my propane tank and is hooked to my main breaker with an interlock.
For internet - 5G hotspot if cable is out. If cell is also out then tin cans and string.
Edit: Of course ever since the generator was all set-up the power hasn't gone out for more than a couple of minutes - not even long enough for me to get it hooked up and started.

I've got some hiking equipment. I've been thinking about having a Sawyer Mini water filter in case there's ever major issues with the water system. But that would be more like during war so I don't worry.

For entertainment I'd probably read books, take walks and nap.
 
A flashlight and a book to read.

Why have a backup interwebs when the thunderstorm just gave you a miracle by getting rid of it?

I live in a climate where it doesn't get too extreme one way or the other with weather year round, so I don't really have much of a plan. I do have an emergency kit in my Jeep though, with flashlights, candles, flint kit, batteries, a first aid kit, water filtration device, crank radio, etc. in case some serious shit hits the fan someday.

We try to keep our fridge lean and with stuff we're going to eat within the next few days, but the freezer is pretty packed, I'd probably lose that if it was a multi-day event. I have plenty of stuff in the pantry though, food-wise. So many beans.
 
Living in south africa im somewhat of an expert.

Almost entirely off grid, mostly solar and inverters, big ol rain collection tanks in the garden. The only issue is internet and these fucks are so corrupt and wont let starlink in... when they do though, that will be my backup.

Nothing beats a petty genny though.

Hahaha I am, but im dual nationality british so I think that either puts me out the race or causes some complications.

But honestly im chilled here, good sun, good food, hot women, I live in a good town where theres not so much problems or crimes as well.

Its just the government that sucks so if I can just bypass their shit then im good.
 
I've got a solar array that I just dump into a bunch of old car batteries in the crawl space. Had some time off a couple years ago and a buddy had a slew of tractor batteries he didn't want that still held a really good charge. I've ran my fridge off them in power outages a few times. It only cost a few hundred bucks for some panels and a good solar controller. You'll want to go Victron there. Panels don't matter much unless space is a big concern. I buy what's cheap on amazon. Lithium or LifePO4 are great for batteries, but you probably have access to nearly free car batteries that can technically do the job. A lot better than nothing. All I'm trying to say is, don't put it off due to cost.

One day I'll put some actual money into it. This was all free and it's done the job well enough.

I've got a copy of the New Testament and the Constitution if the internet ever goes out.

I have solar and a home battery so every time the power goes out for the area, I'm still up and running.

When the Internet goes down, I'm reading. I'm mostly reading even when the Internet is up anyways.

I've never had a recent blackout, but rarely had some internet downtime. I just wait for it to back online.

I only remember two times in history I had a big blackout. That time in 2002 or 2003 when east coast USA and parts of Canada had the power grid failure. It took me 3 hours to get home instead of 1 hr.

And somewhere in the early 1990s our home had a big blackout that last a whole day. I remember because we were all just chilling in the kitchen, talk, eating and I was reading game mags in the limited light we had from the windows and sliding door! I dont think it was even raining that day. But it just zapped out.

Lucky you, here it's really often, it's tornado country in Eastern Ontario so 2 blackouts just this week. The longest one was in early April 2023 for 4 days (my heating is natural gas nut you sell need a generator for the fan). I remember the blackout, the old show Being Erica even had an episode with that in it.

Power blackouts aren't a thing for me. I keep a few foldable water storage bags and some purification tablets in the closet to hedge against the extremely low odds of a water shortage.

And after having the generator hooked up for over a year - one day after making this post we lose power during a thunderstorm. Was only out an hour, so we would have been fine, but it was nice to just hook up the generator and have power and AC again. When you need power for your water a generator becomes more of a necessity.
 
Running off grid with batteries and solar.
Starlink for internet.
2kW and 7kW generators to recharge batteries for extended crap weather.

Used to have spectrum gigabit absolute trash for stability constant dropouts.
 
Had a power outage for about an hour today here in FL after a worse than expected storm rolled through. AC was already set to 70F so while it was 80+ outside (during a thunderstorm mind you, normally 95 or so) the house held. Modem and Router are on a UPS so they were up. Just used my laptop with a anker power station so it was like running it off the wall power. Due to hurricane season every year I've bought quite a bit to prepare. Have a generator but knock on wood haven't had to use it yet.
