Let's all face it: Sony PlayStation doesn't need you!

Some said similar things earlier this gen about xbox.. Things like:

Xbox doesn't need the hardcore gamers, the average consumer will see the series s cheaper than the ps5 and sony will be doomed.

Xbox doesn't need exclusives, gamepass is the best deal in gaming.

Xbox only failed for a lack of true identity.
They had no idea where their core audience was about.

Anyone thinking that they can boycott Sony for that is just dreaming.

We will have to make a decision as old school consumers: drop from their ecosystem or comply. That's it.

Sony knows exactly what they are doing here.

I agree but sony showed today they dont cwre about anything.
I mean Christ even EA and Ubisoft allow outside keys being used on their launchers!.
Honestly buying cheap keys is one of the big advantages of digital gaming. If Sony dont allow it then i hope they dont have as many defenders on here anymore because THAT is anti consumer.

There are currently more peoples downloading digital games than ever before. (90%)

Sony don't need you fans of physical media anymore for profitability. In fact, it's more profitable for Sony to operate in avenues where everyone is buying their first digital product with insatiable appetites than to try and cater to whatever YOU like.

It's effectively over and writing letters to your local Senator won't change this fact.

And that boys and girls is the world in 2026.
Face it.
Every time the conversation goes to "percentage of gamers" - of course they won't care if they just see "but its only 10% of them" - but the real measure is what is the impact of said population, thats why companies run NPS survey because even with a very vocal 10% population that really hates you (but used to love you), you could turn your company upside down.

Edit: ChatGPT version of the above:

Yes, companies care deeply if 10% of their customers are detractors, especially "heavy detractors" (those scoring 0 to 3). In fact, for most industries, eliminating detractors boosts revenue faster than trying to create more top-tier promoters. Having 10% of your customer base actively unhappy is treated as a major business risk for several critical reasons.

Now imagine actively turning your top-tier promoters into heavy detractors just for "business reasons"

Oh absolutely. Same boat as you down to the age demographic as well. But now I won't even look at them for third party games that are also on the PC, and nothing first party has my interest, at all.

If GTA6 was day and date on the PC, that's where I'd be with it.
Yep. The management has been better in the past. They have been on cruise control and only the recent adjustments have made me mildly interested. I put my money where my mouth is. My purchases have been on PC and I've actually bought more from MSFT than Sony the last 3 or 4 years just mainly on PC.

Xbox was all downhill the moment they got rid of the OGs and went to all their $MSFT suits. That brief moment of the OG was the only time they had a semblance of identity.

They never once grew any tangible marketshare after the last 3 years of the 360 with Kinect and were kept treading water all this time by the cult of personality worship of their diehards and their corporate culture pride.

Yeah a $900 PS6 with less options from PS5 will do so well.

I'm happy, I can save money and go elsewhere.

I really thought this wouldn't happen so quickly. We've heard so much noise about how popular discs still are in Europe I just didn't expect Sony to pull the plug like this.

They must either really be confident most will switch to digital, or be confident those that don't switch aren't really making them much money anyways, because this is all pretty wild.

In the end the vast majority of people have their console online whether they buy discs or not.

I wonder what's currently the identity of PlayStation these days... As someone that enjoyed PlayStation since the PS1, it used to be all about a lot of 3rd party exclusives, games that I love like Final Fantasy and Metal Gear with the bonus of constant great Sony first party games like Syphon Filter and Motorstorm.

But now PlayStation is what? No more big 3rd party exclusives, 1 big first party game per year and gaas shit like Marathon.

I may be the minority, but I probably spend around $1K a year in physical games for PlayStation.

If they had competent leadership they could have gained ground on Sony this generation too, but at least Phil was personable and Asha has a nice smile, right?

It's 78% for last FY, not 90%.

They're selling 300m games per year. So 70m are discs. I could understand moving to digital when you really are at 95% or something, but not like this. By 2028 it will be at 80%, that's a generation too soon but yeah, it's obvious that they don't care. This is a pro corpo move. Publishers are gonna love it, too, no more used copies.

Does full game software include titles that didn't have any physical releases?

It means nothing because many people have the disc drive built into the console but never use it anyway.

What matters is software sales

I already posted the split

78 to 22 for the fiscal year just ended: April 1, 2025 - March 31, 2026
Cutting off 22% of software sales would be catastrophic. That's before considering the $1K price tag of the PS6 and the damage done by Sony's GAASlop push.

Not only that, if you look up the percentage of physical purchases for singleplayer games it's even worse. Sony is literally going to kill their own flagship Playstation business which is their amazing singleplayer exclusives.
The PS5 was already quite weak in this regard but oh boy, can't wait to see how the PS6 fumbles it even harder.
Sony might actually be intending to go all in on live-services despite everything :messenger_tears_of_joy:

And I'm basically out the eco system. I was already one foot out based on exclusive quality and them enshitifying their online services. Gonna format this thing and sell it for cash for an FPGA system.

They want full control. They only want you to have access to ps games through their anti consumer store.

It wont happen.
There is an eventuality in the future which will also make hardware exclusivity likely impossible, at which point they'll force anyone still in their ecosystems into subscriber models.

But with the way Sony can delete anything in your digital storage like movies and games, and removing a medium on how a product is distributed, class suit is about to happen.

If their digital-only strategy blindsided you then you're just dumb as fuck because the writing has been on the wall for almost a decade at this point.

They released a digital-only console that required a separate disc drive as an extension for fuck's sake.

My biggest fear is when we go all digital and I'm forced delete a game because my storage is getting full but when I decide to re-download that game and Sony removed the game same way Netflix removes movies from their selection....WTF I'm gonna do then? I just lost access to game I paid full price.

And there was also never a true successor to Blu-Ray in the pipeline.

Holographic discs were promising, but they never came to fruition.

How then, did gamers expect physical media to survive?

Honestly a few months after physical stops, there will be thread after thread on here with titles like 'I was so wrong about digital, its way better', etc.

I was the same when i went PC only towards the end of the 360/PS3 gen. I made quite a few posts on old Gaf about have to be digital only, but very quickly i realised the benefits, and simply realised its way better, easier, and cheaper.
Only problem is hard drive space. It's still not enough, 2TB 4TB 8TB, and now even more expensive than ever. :messenger_pensive:

In theory is should be in your download list forever but who knows with Sony... they removed P.T. from those lists.

BD is still perfectly suitable for current gen games, next gen games as well.

Nope. 90% of what?
90% of new sales direct from Sony?

That figure doesn't take into account the massive used market where gamers get the games they want to play cheaply.

Of course publishers and platform holders don't want that to exist because they get no revenue from it, but fuck them.
