Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

That's my take 2 (pun intended).
At best the consoles will get a 40 FPS VRR mode.
Going by "more stable framerate", that would mean the base PS5 drops below 30 FPS more often than not.
Wouldn't even be surprised when you think about how much ai tech they are pushing in this game.
Also remember GTA V on PS3? FPS was bad and the game had quite some downgrades.
People talk about rdr2 running on a ps4 as indicative of gta6 running super well on a ps5 but they forgot how many times the framerate crawled into a ball in that game..framerate was as stable as your average reeee member...

And gta6 is a modern city with 10x times more stuff on screen at any given time.

There is absolutely no way any console is gonna have close to a stable framerate except MAYBE a 30 fps mode on pro.

I doubt even a 40hz mode on pro is gonna be locked 100% of the time.

Good, melt our faces finally.

I mean, compared to how RDR1 and GTA V ran on the PS3, RDR2 did indeed run silky smooth on the PS4.
But yeah, these games always tend to push consoles to their absolute limits to the point the framerate is never a fixed 30.

Man sounds like 60 fps is off the table. Going from 120-200 fps back to 30 with insane input lag will be painful af
It's not 100% off the table, there's still the chance it might happen.
But believe me, going by what we saw with GTA V and RDR2 these games being 30fps with dips to the low 20s even is not because they are badly optimized, it's because they are pushing the hardware as hard as they can and justifiably so. If VI is locked to 30 it will be a good sign and almost certainly worth it.
Better experiences with better framerates will then come to PC and PS6 for the people who absolutely cannot play a game at lower framerates.

1. You will get used to it
I got called a casual when I told someone they'll get used to the 30fps after playing for 10 minutes or so and after a while they won't even notice it.
They told me that if you play a lot, when you get used to playing games on PC or on the Pro with high framerates it is impossible to go back to 30.

Meanwhile here I am with my decently beefy PC, playing most games with triple digit framerates and then I can immediately jump onto my PS5 and play Ghost of Yotei with Fidelity Mode.
I think performance modes this gen genuinely fucked with a lot of people's minds and their perception of what is actually a playable game.

These are the same kinds of people who did not notice any issues with Bloodborne's performance back when it came out btw :messenger_tears_of_joy:

That's good for you.
Ever since i got my first high refreshrate display 6 years ago (144hz), i can't even go back to playing at 60.
It's not as bad on controller as wtih kbm, though still annoying :D
For me 90 FPS feels like the minimum to enjoy a game.

You know, on PC you have the choice, why would i choose 60 or less? :pie_thinking:
I haven't owned a console since the N64. Back then we played most games at an average of like 20 FPS. At least consoles today usually offer performance modes.
People who never played with triple digit FPS don't even know what they're missing and that's fine.
I just upgraded to a 4K OLED from a 1440P LG Nano IPS and even though i knew the black levels would be insane (a friend has an OLED TV), seeing it and playing on it still blew my mind.
Now i can't go back to 1440P or a shitty IPS with clouding in the corners:messenger_tears_of_joy:
It's all about what you know and experienced on your own.
Another example, my buddy with the OLED TV, he is a casual console gamer and was used to playing at 30 FPS in quality mode on his base PS5 back then.
When he came over to my house and played games at 120+ FPS he was like "i'm getting motion sick, it's too fast blablabla".
Then he got the PS5 PRO and he got used to 60 FPS and now he hates 30:lollipop_smirking:

Yeah. Tbh i hate the input lag more than the actual fps and rockstar games tend to have insane input lag. There are some games that feels better even at 30 fps, destiny 1 for example, but gtas and rdr felt awful
I think its a matter of experiencing smooth 60 already, then its hard to go back, gta5 on ps4 back end of 2014 was fine in stable 30 for me but thats before i experienced both gta5 and rdr2 on pc in butter smooth 60 with much reduced input lag.
We were perfectly fine with interlaced 480(it wasnt even 480p, it was much worse 480i) back in the days of ps2, now tho 1080p ai upscaled to 4k is bare minium for "clear" IQ xD

Think of it this way, at first highschool girl might experience puppy love and dont need her bf to have car/own his own place, then with time she keeps on upgrading to college bf who has some sidejob and his own place, then later to even richer guy with much better car and appartament, and by 30yo she wont settle for anything below villa and a fleet of sportcars of a multimilionaire if she experienced it before, she cant go back in living standard after getting a solid taste of it before.

We as gamers in mid 2026 are in this aspect kinda like that 30yo alpha widowed woman, its very hard, almost impossible for us to go back to lower standard of gaming and enjoy ourselfs, we can go back but only begrudgingly and with nagging attitude, thinking we are settling for something worse than we deserve 🫡

I know, was just messing with you.

Having said that, I have always played at 30 fps even when I had the choice. Heck I don't think I have ever played at 60 fps besides sports and shooting games

I actually dont remember how bad gta5 and rdr1 were running but i still remember rdr2 framerate going down with too much fire or explosions or when i started some chaos in saint denis, the most populated area of the game, there were probably other instances that i cant remember but i never thought for a moment "wowo look how stable the framerate is in this game" :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

But i trust you that the ps3 games were worse.

Nah, you get used to 30 after a while even after years of 120+ framerates, it just doesnt feel as good but nowhere near unplayable.

Some of these kids today never played anything on a really underpowered pc to know the misery of REALLY low, unplayable framerates.

I played halo in what was the pc equivalent of that poor kid sued by nintendo for making a switch out of a cardbox, i would have sucked sidney sweeney toes to get even an unstable 30, and i'm not a foot fetisher...

I never owned a PS3 but I did play a bunch of games on it because a good friend of mine at the time had one. RDR1 in particular is the worst performing game I remember playing on that console.
At the time I wasn't really aware of performance in videogames and how that works but even then I could tell something was not right with the lack of "fluidity" that the game had.

I only got a 1080p capable GPU in 2016.
I only got a 1080p60fps capable GPU in 2018.
I used to play COD 2 and COD 4 at 640x480 on a 17' LCD monitor with no anti-aliasing because it tanked performance.
Nowadays I just laugh when I remember how I used to play videogames in the 2000s compared to now when I sometimes bitch because I can see jaggies in my games :messenger_tears_of_joy:

I have shit memory so the worse performing games on ps3 for me was infamous1, literal slow motion with chaos on screen. Which was 80% of the time.

I played fear 1 and halo 1 (and many others) at those resolution in the same acer 17" acer monitor but at like unstable 10 fps...i kinda deserve a medal to get to 3\4 of the game without giving up...the flood section killed any residual will to continue...

When i replayed the fucking thing on an og xbox at almost locked 30 was like when you taste wagyu beef for the first time...

What the fuck wrong with rockstar not showing trailer 3 or gameplay until now, just release 60 pictures most of them are bullshit
They always show gameplay close to the release.

When you are a famous rockstar, you know your groupies are gonna follow you no matter what.

(See what i did there 🥲 )

Well. Considering the state of things - who has a ps5 pro? I might just trade my launch ps5 in and get one. Is it worth it for the graphics?

PSSR2 is fantastic, more games than ever support it, and GTA VI is right around the corner.

Yeah it's worth it IMO (although I was fortunate enough to get mine for less than the original $700 MSRP).

It is kinda worth if you are an enthusiast player and you have money to throw.

Probably more worthy if you play everything on console unlike me.

I'd really like to know how much money T2 made in just the first 24h of preorders.
I don't think I've ever seen so many people on social media proudly announcing they've paid $100 for a videogame they still don't know nothing about.

But my algorithms are probably quite biased aa well.

Every one of those pictures were closeups. I genuinely think Rockstar is going to reveal as little as possible before launch. They don't want to give GTA mapping community any more ammunition. They did similar things with RDR2. St Denis wasn't shown at all prior to release. In a lot of ways, the less they show, the more hype the game will generate. Everybody already believes it will be a 10/10 anyways

The choice to me is between this and getting a PC, which I do kinda want a PC but I don't want it to be less powerful than a ps5

To get a pc weaker than a ps5 in 2026 you must really scrape the barrel of the offers dude, i doubt they even sell gpus weaker than a ps5 nowadays...
