Steam Machine Price Announced - Starting at $1049 / £879

Of course not lol. But it's a PC so it still can do lots of things a console cant.

Now, why would you buy the gabecube instead of a laptop... that's imo the important thing to ask.
It depends on what people want. I wouldn't buy it since my PC is connected to the living room TV, but if I were looking for new hardware for couch gaming in the Steam ecosystem, I'd prefer a box like that over a laptop, even if it meant sacrificing some specs. If you something more versatile and also gaming, then a laptop might be the better choice.

It would be a tough sell at half that price. Good luck Gabe. Ultimately this won't really hurt Valve / Steam but they should've just canned it.
It's probably going to be a massive financial loss for Valve imo.

Scalpers will carry the first few shipments, but I don't see a way for them to not end up with tons of unsold stock.

Microsoft didn't get anywhere near enough shit for proprietary storage upgrades this gen….

All the fanboys are it up.

"But it's so easy you just slot it in after paying 75%-120% more than you would for an nvme drive for your ps5! No screws it's so easy!"
They copied PS Vita bullshit, Sony at lest learned not to repeat this in the main console.
Same people who shat on the Vita for it, were glazing the microshaft and running damage control. :pie_roffles:

DOA. Unfortunate reality of the current cost of memory and such. Nobody will pay that much for so little.

Holy shit, I never knew that!

yeah, but I don't know if you can rip your CDs tho. I haven't tried if VLC supports CD ripping on it (because Windows apps have certain restrictions on Xbox), but I know the official CD player app doesn't support ripping.

So real question, ur expectaction on how will it sells first 5 years(we know steamdeck is around 4-6m units)? With that price u recon it has even slimmest chance to sell more? Coz i diseagree strongly with that take.
It all depends on the stock. We've all seen how everything Valve made just went out of stock for a while

This will sell even with this outrageous price. DreamCast sold 9m and Wii U sold 13.5

I need more boats bitches ...btw steam summer sale starts Thursday

Just modernize or build a proper pc, if u arent knowledgeable/skilled enough tons of stores offer service to doit for u, or u could hunt for decent prebuild(we will help u here on gaf like we did to many other ppl in need before).
This type of response feels exhausting and isn't ideal for someone searching for less hassle to have a box under the TV and Steam ecosystem. Have you seen the threads here for people not knowing how to connect a PC to their TV?
It's like telling someone who drives 10 hours a day to stop at a restaurant for lunch, only to wait 30 minutes for the menu, when all really want is a quick bite on the road.

And for the record, i do believe the price-performance of this is bullshit, but there will be people who still want it.

I was watching the GN review, and at a point they touched an important point, because Valve really fucked up with this.
There are Steam Machines that use 2x8GB DDR5 5600. And others that use 1X16GB. So no dual channel memory for these.
This means that some machines will perform better than others, just because of luck of what you got.

Oddly enough, the price for a 2TB Xbox expansion module is now comparative to a 2TB nvme drive. I recognize that this is probably due to these expansion cards being produced before the price spikes and the fact that they have been sitting on the shelves for a few years. To be clear, this is no win for MS, more of a funny observation of a fucked up situation.

i am sure gabecube wont reach those even :)
If i was betting man i would put my whole savings/flat on it, thats how sure i am it will have terrible numbers :D

They should have just cancelled it and went back to the idea in the future
I agree. They might be playing the long game and just thinking 'if components drop we'll drop the price in the future'.

Personally, whilst I really like the form factor and idea, it's a no from me at this price. To be honest, it would have to be south of £500 for me to consider but even then it's not exactly leaping out at me.

I currently have a Deck, which I really like, but it sort of scratches the itch for me in terms of Valve hardware.

You're looking at this incorrectly. People aren't laughing cause it's 1000, people are laughing cause it's worse than a ps5 console at that price. A ps6 at 1000 that's more than 3 times the power of PS5 is a completely different story.
Thats actually a much worse news because if ps6 is much powerful than steam box, then it will be more expensive if its launch 2027. Just give it more time for components price to stabilize possibly late 2028 or 2029.

They probably just bought whatever they could.

Absolutely DOA.

Massively overpriced, massively underpowered. 10/10 for absolute fucking incompetence.

They'd have been better off cancelling it. Now it'll be another decade before we get another shot at bringing the living room PC into the mainstream.

You clearly overestimate the commitment of people to go through any type of "hassle" if is not plug and play with one hand and being blind :))

is it safe to assume that PS6 and Helix will be around this price maybe even higher ?
For the main models, I think £799-£999 depending on how competitive they are feeling.

Wouldn't surprise me if there is some significant effort by both to provide 'viable' cheaper alternatives; Xbox streaming stick (£99?) and the leaked PS handheld (£599-£799?).

We cooked though bros. Prices come will come down for the manufactures eventually, but we're never seeing that passed on the consumer.

I remember thinking this thing was a piece of shit at $600. I get that I am not yet calibrated to the AI world, but over 1k for something that is not better than a PS5 is fucking nuts.
