Steam Machine Price Announced - Starting at $1049 / £879

The worst part of this is what this means for next gen.

The PS6 and Helix are screwed. Next gen is guarenteed to be over $1000 when it launches.

This gen will be the last system people own for years to come. So settle in boys because cross gen games are going to be here for at least the next 5 years.

Also, xboxs console exclusive strategy test for gears and clockwork revolution will be DOA. Nintendo about to benefit the most from this landscape. Switch 2 caught up and next gen is not moving forward.

I was excited for something like this but not anymore, it's a nice form factor but that price point and the hardware seems like a no from me dawg.

And not even packed with Half Life 3.

I forgot about that. No HL announcement, can we finally confirm it's not happening? I was convinced but there were some dreamers here and there still hoping. It would have been a way to soften the blow from that price tag so we can probably bury the rumors for good now.

So weird to go with 1049 or 1129 rather than round numbers. 1000 and 1100… greed got the better of them here. These numbers LOOK way worse just because they're so specific.

Either way though… this thing is pointless and WAY niche. It's luxury, except the product itself isn't luxury in its actual tech.
Yup they wanna sell us entry lvl specs product for premium price, im being generous here when i say it wont even reach steamdeck ltd sales aka 5-6m units total :)

LTT had a video implying it was pretty much wholesale prices and that this was clearly coming in hot around 7-800. Assuming that's the 2TB model and prices have gone up 50% easy it's clear you can see the 1200 strictly on DRAM, the SoC and NVMe.

Unless you're dead set on the steam Eco System this is a non starter. I figured for sure because it wasn't a custom thing like the steam deck it wouldn't carry the handheld tax.

Anywho, I build this over the weekend and I'm running cachy so I have my own Steam Machine.

That looks awesome dude! Nice slim build. What's the spec?

What did you guys expect? I have some sad news for you dummies who expected a $600 Steam machine regarding Helix and PS6.

Go get that second job now.

Price to performance ratio doesn't work. Will pass this time.
I'm a bit sad about this because this was going to be my reentry back into pc gaming.

I've built plenty of rigs over the years but when I last moved, I had no extra funds or time to dedicate to the hobby so my gaming was better served on consoles.
I can't justify spending over 1k$ on hard ware this week.
I'll wait and MAYBE build something much nicer when memory prices finally come down.
What a disappointment and I feel so bad for the team that worked on this as they truly got screwed over by Ai.

It's not as bad as it first sounds when you compare it against current component prices, but damn. They are really hoping the small form factor does the heavy lifting.

I'd probably go with something more like:

+

That's around the same $1,050 and isn't that much larger. With the bonus that the 9060XT gives you 16GB of video memory.

Welp. I was hoping that they could come in under $1K for the 512GB model, but nope.

I won't say it's outright DOA. There are Valve crazies and Gabe nutjobs out there with money burning a hole in their pocket, and they'll buy the Steam Machine. But once you get past them and get to the more normie PC gamers...this device is gonna be a VERY hard sell to that crowd at those prices. Even when considering that the SM (just like all other Valve hardware) is targeting a very niche market.
Its DOA 100%, likely will sell similar or even below steamdeck numbers, so utterly terrible even compared to failed consoles.
