I want devs to return to prioritizing maximum graphics at 30fps again...

GTAVI might be that game.
That would be disappointing if it were the only mode.

Pearl Abyss showed you can do 30/40/60 in a massive open world with tons of systems, great graphics, and RTGI.

More than likely since Sony has the marketing rights, they'll want modes to sell their $900 Pro's as well.

I feel like I've only been disappointed with the graphics of this generation. Most games look barely better than PS4 games and I partially blame the shift to trying to make every game have a performance mode.

Hear me out. What if devs made a game at 1080p/30fps with INSANE graphics? I don't mean they should maximize reflection quality with ray tracing and use all of the 30fps frame budget on that. I mean actually make something that is so insanely detailed that the PS5 can ONLY do 30fps on that game.

I can't be the only one that feels like this generation has been PS4.5 right? Looking at the new God of War game, I can't even tell a visual difference from the 2018 GoW game.

I still think EARLY PS4 games were peak graphics. Stuff like DriveClub, The Order 1886, Infamous Second Son, Killzone Shadowfall BLEW ME AWAY back then. Then as the PS4 generation went on, developers seemed to start to get lazy and then into the PS5 era, nothing really changed.
I'm with you OP, unfortunately there are too many cultists who are obsessed with their high framerate. I just don't know why they don't go to play on pc then.

Continuing to push ever higher graphical envelopes is one reason why games take so long to develop and are so expensive. I'm fine with them letting the graphical pipelines catch up to modern development capabilities and us getting 60fps games in the interim.

Oh by the way, again, most people here can't understand the difference between designing a game around 30 fps on console vs 60 fps. It's not just graphics, there is also a cpu which gets neglected if you have a 60 fps performance mode, because the difference between quality vs performance mode is usually only resolution and some minor things. A lot more could be achieved both gpu and cpu wise if games were designed with 30 fps in mind. But we can't have that thanks for the cultists.

I've been following the "Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Generation" thread and so many people are simply disappointed at what they're seeing. Nothing looks like that true next generation jump in graphics. Everything just kinda looks the same these days. Nothing is breaking new ground.

Where's the next gen physics? Where's the next gen distruction? Where's the next gen weather and wind effects?

I really miss the days of the likes of Uncharted 2 and 3 where the game wasn't a massive open world 100 hour game, but instead a very fun, action packed, short game.

I'd rather play a really well made 9 hour game (like RE:R) than a mediocre game that has millions of things to do.

Bring back graphical showpieces!!!
In the budgets devs can't afford... That's the actual real bottleneck and not tech these days

I ignored the State of Play. But IMO, what's up with those PS4 era materials? The canvas blanket at the start has some individual threads, but the main texture is horrible. You don't need raytracing for good physical based rendering. Realistic looking materials make the worlds look so much better.

I want devs to put out only one fully optimized version per console. That way all attention and work goes into that one. Because what's happening now, devs clearly suck at optimizing 10+ visual options.

The asymptotic curve between real time and pre-rendered was too close in the PS4 generation. Sacrifice 30fps in any game would give you nothing that most of us would notice. Neither the PS6 will. Yes, the acolytes of "right light bouncing on this side of this wall that nobody looks at" will be delighted, but realistically the progress ended in PS4. PS6 RT will help to reduce development cost more than show the consumer anything that the pre-baked lightning of TLOUpII hasn't s already give to them.
And with the first PT on a PS console you'll suddenly praise it to high heavens and ask how anyone could not immediately see the drastic difference.....

The push for 60fps is not why games don't look impressive anymore. It's because we're hitting diminishing returns in terms of rasterization.

Also RAM/VRAM amounts are not increasing the way they used to. Next gen consoles used to have x16 the amount of memory as the previous gen. Now you get a x2 in the best case.

Also ray/path tracing is still too demanding and doesn't improve graphics enough to justify the performance loss.

PS2 had 60fps games looking great back then, even today they look fine. The art and design are much more important I think.
Secondly, most games that were pushing visuals sucked at gameplay and had so little interactivity, which kills the replay value etc.
Fuck off with 60fps....

Cringe post of the month? Year? All time??

Imagine wanting 30fps again…

That's insane. After moving to pc anything below 60 is like sand paper on my eyes. I just turn down settings till I get there.

We've seen as such with games like Hellblade 2. No other game has come close, graphically. GTA 6 will likely be the next big tenure in the raw graphics and tech focus, as I can't see Rockstar offering a 60 fps performance mode, even on the PS5 Pro.

Hellblade 2 is 60fps on consoles now. Not even big image quality sacrifices compared to the old 30fps mode.

This gen was a stop gap because of that 30 -> 60 jump in standard, true next gen to PS4 generation will be PS6 gen.

I think in the end most people prefer fluid gameplay over graphics (me included).
Exactly.

Now that 60fps is standard, a dev can get a big jump in graphics on ps6 if they keep the focus on 60.

I'd imagine a lot of devs will also provide 30fps and 120fps options still.

I agree, most console games are not difficult enough to require 60fps and 30 with good motion blur can both look and feel great. Think spider man on ps4. 40 fps is a nice compromise too.

Tell me how Evolution Studio was able to craft a game that looks as good as Drive Club? I still think there are details in that game that still have yet to be matched even to this day and yet... while I see high resolution games with great textures, it's all the small stuff that adds up that makes a game truly jaw dropping.

The fact that DriveClub featured mirages and each rain droplet had it's own physics, and the car windows having fingerprints and smudges on them that only showed up if the light hit it JUST RIGHT and the glowing brake calipers and the way the metallic paint glistened in the sun and if you drove during the early morning sunrise, your car would develop condensation! Also, even the headlights cast shadows on the environment AND other cars! Some of the trackside details are a bit crappy compared to today's games, but the visuals shined where it really mattered. You weren't necessarily looking at the trees as they're whipping by on the track.

Why can't we have that level of detail these days? Honest question.

We plateaued graphicly a while back. It's probably downhill from here given that the Graybeards are retiring and being replaced with worse talent (woke smooth brained AI/tiktok users with the attention span of a goldfish.) We'll see what happens with quantum computing.
Not sure how Quantum computing can impact visual fidelity. Unless you are talking of young folks managing a new technology..?

I think AI upscaling next gen (so you can fake resolution and fps jump) will bring back actual graphical improvements. You cannot look at the DLSS 5 showcase and not accept actual improvements are occuring, including in the games that already exist.

Otherwise you're right OP, graphics haven't improved an inch since 2014-2015. People just don't want to accept it. But We all knew this was going to happen with diminishing returns.

I already have performant RT in the pro and it's not a big deal. And 30fps modes in PS5. The graphic fidelity left between a PS4 and pre-rendered is so narrow that the difference with more advanced techniques must be seen on comparisons. And it only makes things better because devs are being savvy with pre-baked. AC Shadows looks better with RTGI because the normal mode doesn't have the care Capcom put on the RE2 remake lightning, as an example.

60fps is literally the best thing that ever happened this generation.
100%
PS4 was somehow worse than PS3 because the image always switched from reasonably nice FHD when standing still, to blurry mess in motion, which was much less noticeable on PS3 where the default was throughout blurry mess. 60fps is required to make 4k or anything look decently sharp when actually playing. I might even be interested in a 120fps performance option next gen and 60 should be for quality mode.

Describe what "insane graphics" are. What is a game that is "insanely detailed"?

Prioritizing 30fps for graphics in 2026 is a ridiculous take. We're deep into diminishing returns. Sacrificing 60fps to stare at a slightly shinier rock while ruining the game's responsiveness is stupid. All that extra detail just turns into a blurry mess the second you move the camera anyway.

Ohhhh… I think the "right light bouncing wackos" thing that I said hurt you, right?

It's rather simple
- either you are suffering from advanced glaucoma or similar =>your problem.
- or you pretend to be blind because you're one of those retarded platform warriors/trolls who can't cope with the limitations of their budget box=>Not worth talking to you.

Summarised:
Not my problem, sorry dude

Just one of those "baffling how stupid online people can actually (pretend to) be" moments...

Once we start going cross gen again (i.e., when PS6 launch games start to get announced) we'll probably see more 30fps games PS5.
