Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Insomniac is the only sony studio that is putting out more than 1 game this entire generation, we'll have to cut them some slack for not completely switching engines or starting over, at least they have work to show.
With the kind of budget these guys have, at least according to the leaks, it should not have been an issue to have a few people on the side upgrading the engine, though.
Wolverine is an utterly pathetic showing on a technological level, and if we're honest so was SM2 already.

Back in the days when i still kinda enjoyed set pieces that were 100% spectacle with 0 gameplay value, ah youth...

I can't believe Sony Santa Monica finally showed their next gen GoW game in 2026, set for a 2027 launch, and we're STILL waiting for a true graphics powerhouse from a Sony game this generation! LOL. This is indeed the cost of 60 fps thats all I can say. I see improvements over Ragnarok for sure but not what I was hoping for.

Compare this reveal to the e3 2016 GoW trailer ...not on the same level in terms of wow-factor. I'm just hoping with both this and Wolverine that its Youtube compression holding back some detail but that's probably just me coping.

It looks really good but I can't help but compare everything they do against PS3 and PS4 standards.

But those setpieces were fucking Epic at least, now we get some forced walking and talking.
Avoiding cronos huge hands and hitting his fingers and then go ham with qte would put me in a coma today.

Humanoid shaped boss fights are 99,99% of times more technical or varied or just fun to fight, it is pretty much an unwritten rule of bossfights unless you only care about spectacle, not to mention less bullshit huge hitboxes from paws or mouths or tails...

You still get your shitty car chase and all of those unchy setpieces in stuff like 007 once in a while.

Whenever I see how disappointing Wolverine looks, I rationalize it by saying "well it's 60fps so that's the sacrifice", but ILL also appears to be 60fps during gameplay so the excuse just evaporates. I mean if this is the price to pay for Insomniac's efficiency this gen then i'll take it, but it even feels like we are regressing, after how mind-blowing Rift Apart can still look today.

Also I really wish Digital Foundry would shut the fuck up calling every game "handsome", this latest update of their vocabulary is already so tiresome. "Bespoke" was bad enough. It's reaching the point where I don't want to watch them any more just because of how predictably annoying they are.
After DF's retraction from their thoughts about DLSS5, I stopped paying much attention to them, I had a suspicion that they are a bit too guarded by what people think of their thoughts, that they have become too safe, but that apology video thingy confirmed it to me.

Please Nvidia & Mark Cerny, come save us from this crap, we need Path Tracing & RTX AI Neural Rendering future be established as a standard. 😭😖

After seeing onimusha i think capcom sacrificed all the goats and laptops they had to the graphic god to achieve requiem and we are gonna get upscaled ps4 games for the rest of the gen like they did before re9...

Oh well...

Onimusha looks pretty terrible, especially with this horrible black level lift.

Holy fuck Capcom, C team or something?
Aren't you reading the room? 60 fps targets on current gen console is the punching bag of the day. No other explanations allowed. If only Sony had stuck to 30, Capcom would have followed and RE engine could have had better RTGI and denoisers that every game can use! Think of all the cope possibilities!

After watching digital Foundry video Truly Fuck 60fps target this bullshit make current gen consoles looks like 0.5 upgrade over last gen, are sony and others who target 60fps think they can do 60fps with path tracing and true 2k quality on next gen consoles, if that the case good luck to them lol, fuck 60fps and those who support it over good looking games.

They did will with requiem and pragmata, ominusha looks so fucking last gen since it's first announcement and it's never improved since then, they seems they don't care about visuals at all at this one,

I Really like gow Faye visuals and think it's looks really great in all aspects but The sad fact if you don't like it and also hate wolverine section that they showed like all of us, don't blame youtube for that, the trailers for are have 4k av1 mp4 download with 21k bitrate which look far better than regular YouTube videos, so they really upload very high bitrate versions to you youtube which mean very close quality to it's direct feed capture without noticeable difference

Remember when I, ChiefDada, pointed out RTGI in Yotei announcement trailer before DF did???

Yeah I think we'll see the same thing for Faye. The soft shadows created from the many emissive lights in the trailer are too high fidelity for standard raster technique imo.
Dude your wernt even close to the only person who noticed that.

Hardware Unboxed hands-on with Nvidia DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction. They demoed 2 games:

• Pragmata.
• Indiana Jones.

No performance metrics yet, but glowing impressions all throughout. Indiana Jones textures look much clearer with DLSS 4.5 RR. Ghosting and "boiling" are almost entirely eliminated in those 2 games.

Small comparison:

Good on Nvidia.

Onimusha looks mid to say the least. I didn't see nothing in the demo that don't seem possible to run on the PS4. After RE9 and Pragmata getting PT implementation I really hope Onimusha gets it as well. It would help it immensely.

PS: Game is fun as hell, combat is really great.

Yeah, visuals and the dark atmosphere are the main points for the game, they have a lot of stuff to fix for the gameplay/combat.
The geometry and complexity of assets are amazing.

Only 4 min inside the new gow trailer, do people really think new gow hairs are nextgen? they are better than previous gows but they are still collected into huge clumps that move together, there is no separation or illusion of single strands like fifa, ac shadows, veilguard, pragmata, tressfx tomb raider\w3 etc.

Ironically, Wolverine and GoWL wouldn't have been all that impressive even if they had been shown at E3 2017....too sad
it would have been far more difficult actually for them to prove themselves, because back then the majority of the games [Arkham Knight, AC4, The Division, Uncharted 4, Infamous:SS, etc.]
delivered on the next-gen promise in terms of visuals and gameplay innovations. With the industry's current standards [60fps, DEI, gamepass-quality games, GaaS, etc.],
it is far more lucrative to do less than more, ...in all aspects of game development. MS and Sony have become too big and as a result too risk-averse to remain innovative AND profitable

this is what's safe. this is what's enough

I cannot wait for GTAVI to replenish hope, restore the standards and raise the bar
because Sony and MS betrayed our trust and loyalty, repeatedly lied to our faces and eventually failed miserably this generation

Marvel's Wolverine isn't going to be an open world or sandbox game. Linear game confirmed by Insomniac.
A linear game with that kind of visual fidelity with that kind of water reflections... Not sure why they didn't go with SSR + Cubemap. Linear means almost no time of day changes, cubemap would do wonders there.

Metro Game Central - Marvel's Wolverine will be linear and not open world confirm Insomniac
I too was unimpressed and disappointed by the lack of engine upgrades, but [hot take incoming] one thing they tend to do on purpose, in the hope of getting better reviews down the line, is
showing older less polished builds just so that the critics and social media notice the minimal upgrades and think twice about criticising the other aspects of the game

and I must say they've really cranked things up visually
Pushing rainbows of color and adding some hair tech (possibly; I'll check my screenshots of Ragnarok at home later; vaguely remember Cif and Turd having similar hair) is very far from "really cranking things up visually".
Technically it looks about the same as Ragnarok. The difference is in the art direction.

Some improvements to cards, possibly switch to strands, add YouTube compression on top and you get Faye.

I think hair is card based with some physics applied, not comparable to hairstrands in Pragmata (and other games with them).

some people saying new gow is peak ps5 graphic it's why sony doesn't even need to try anymore...

True, it's just evolution of Ragnarok/GOW2018 engine but nothing approaching current gen standards (set by UE5 and few others).

All Sony engines are old and outdated at this point, even Insomniac is pretty much stuck in 2020 with their tech.

This scene has cutscene lighting quality, few seconds later it looks like this:

I think Wolverine will have bigger hub areas than what was shown in Demo. At least, the leaks describe it as that. I think director just wanted to get it out there that it is not Open World like Spider-Man

Also santa monica studio in all their games have identical gameplay to cutscenes except when using cgi unlike ND and Insomniac

Hair was clipping in that demo. It's still early build probably, I wonder if they will improve it in next showing.

Is Mirror's Edge still the king of baked lighting?

One of the first games to simulate GI and AO (no SSAO at all) and results are still impressive.

Sony seems to be allergic to nextgen tech...

WTF is happening with lazy ass devs... This is Tomb Raider 2013:

The fact that we can't expect better textures than a 13 years old game is crazy. 13 years before Tomb Raider 2013 and we had CS, Soldier of Fortune, Deus Ex etc... Now that was a big jump.

And the game is pretty linear, there is no excuse
