You're not gay or woke for enjoying it. You're simply not a fan of the God of War franchise, and that's totally fine.

The issue isn't that she's yet another female protagonist. The issue is that she's replacing Kratos one of PlayStation's most beloved and iconic characters, who has been the face of the franchise since 2005.

If you want to make a game about your new character with her jelly cube companion and magic ribbons, then go ahead and do it. Just leave Kratos as the God of War.

Imagine the backlash if Tomb Raider replaced Lara Croft with a dude. People would lose their minds. Why should this be any different?

What makes it worse is that this isn't some spin off. It's a mainline entry in the series. The only chance we'll likely get to see Kratos again is in the upcoming remakes, which will probably end up being censored and watered down trash anyway.

The argument being that God of War Laufey has mechanics that will be present in the God of War Trilogy Remake and that this may be a testing ground or borrowed from that other project.

When you write an offensive reply to someone at least try to learn what that person's opinions. I have said a hundred times that Kratos's story was complete after GOW3. That was the end for me. A new protagonist was necessary for a new mythology and I even suggested a valkyrie.

Right, I just don't like the styling - it feels very Horizon Zero Dawn to me. I would've preferred something more dark and edgy, akin to Morrigan from Dragon Age. This just feels way too tame, very "white person with dreadlocks playing drums at a local cultural festival."

The plates and lighter elements actually remind me of the armor from El Shaddai. But still, it lacks creativity. Maybe I'm just picky - and no, I don't need this game to be overly sexy or erotic. But something more daring or edgy would've been cool. This just feels tame, safe, SFW. Given the game's world and context, it just doesn't make much sense to me.

Edit: combat animations and general presentation of the game's graphics and production value look top tier to me though.

I suppose the choice of Laufey is not terrible because it is a character related to Loki, one of the most popular characters in Norse myth, who is a blank slate since nothing is known about them. But the way modern God of War deals with these characters is so bland and uninspiring that I'd struggle to care about them in any way if you gave me a million dollars to pretend be a huge fan.

Selling old theme is safer than creating new one from scratch (and also more profitable as you often can resell old to a new people), this is why characters/universes widely reused (see SW above).
Crying to the moon about this is pointless, things will keep happening and people will get attracted to a "new style" of old things.

The game looks great IMO, the quality of the model looks great and is a HUGE improvement over her ragnarok model. I was ready to hate this before I saw it but the gameplay looks fast and fun, I'm not thrilled about the cube etc but I like the actor who's voicing it so hopefully it will grow on me. Regardless it looks like fun and the people who are upset that a female who's out there fighting doesn't look centerfold perfect all the time crack me up. You know how ugly most male characters in games are? lol.

The weird thing is, for once, NeoGaf is the outlier here (well, except Asmongolds comment section, but that's expected), as far as I can tell this game is mostly being received well even on PlayStations official channel which can be a cesspool as seen by the Yotei trailer.

Bad time to be calling your game 'Laufey' when not only will a lot of people probably associate that name with the singer, but the singer's often asked in interviews about the pronunciation of her name, which is much closer to 'Loy-vey' than 'Low-fay', which is how the writers in the video were pronouncing it. Given the character's nickname is Faye, that mispronunciation seems baked-in.

This is a game, a fantasy one at that. Being appealing is way more important than whatever sense of realism you're talking about. There are 1001 excuses they could've come up with to give her a cool outfit or a more distinguished appearance. But they choose not to, that is a choice not a need.

You can be sure Sony deletes comments on their video's. Its a near 60/30 split for like to dislike so not great. Yotei was like 10:1 on its first trailer.

And GoW is a different beast. Its been around for decades and has a solid following. Releasing a GoW game (as mainline) without the God of War is certainly a choice. On top of Sony's usual shenanigans for game/design.

In these times when every publisher is obsessed with setting up their Universe, playing as an off-character is not that weird.

Honestly, I don't want Kratos in another low stake Ragnarok (huge plot mid execution) style anyway. Laundry will tie up and extend the Mask mystery.
I want Kratos in the most DEFINITIVE God of War game, not these side dishes and off shoots. Let the story build up and Kratos come crashing in with the final installments.

I like all the God Of wars games. As long as we get one final God War with Kratos then thats fine.
A side game with Fey i got no probs with (rather her than Loki to be honest)
Combat looked fun, graphics looked great.

But.... That Ribbon and Cube....If it was just a Sword with less humour I think Id be ok with it... Really didnt like it.

Anyway I will play it as I think there will be enough good stuff in it and story beats/ lore.

When I watched the gameplay it didn't give the best first impression because it just seemed like more of the same GoW, which I liked but wanted something different. Once it got past that and I saw the combat I was definitely more impressed. It's a shame it has the GoW name attached as that'll forever mar the reception of the game, and it's being harshly judged because of it, but this might end up being a better game than the 2018 GoW. They really should have wrapped it around a new IP and let the GoW name be forever attached to Kratos.

It will definitely not be better than 2018. That game is excellent. Everything after has been so dissapointing.

Well this thread went exactly as expected.

Personally I think it looks frickin awesome. I love God of War 2018 and Ragnarok and can't wait for more. I don't at all mind the franchise expanding to include other characters, there's plenty of room for that - it's an interesting universe. However, I wouldn't have chosen Faye as the main character - it feels a bit like the whole Solo movie "we don't need to fully explore every character's backstory" type of thing. I liked her role in the Norse games and would have left it at that. I think a game with an older Atreus would be awesome. Or maybe even - gasp - a totally new character.

It also does look to be leaning maybe a little too hard into silly/cutesy with the Disney animals and Frank the cube and all. I think they struck a good balance in the Norse games with a bit of levity and silliness but it's easy to go too far.

That being said, it's more God of War. The combat looks as fantastic as ever, the graphics are insane - finally what we expected from this generation - with that Sony polish and presentation. Sign me all the way up.
