GOW already jumped the shark with Ragnarok. This is just continuation on the path they set.
I don't know what they should've done after GOW 2018, but this isn't it. Kratos maybe should've been put out to pasture, but that's not how franchises work. I agree with Jaffe that Kratos is a pulp character, and should've stayed like that. Of course doing the same thing can wear out over time, so you need to refresh the franchise somehow.
Given how GOW as a franchise is a male testosterone power fantasy to the core, they should've gone the DOOM route of reinventing the old formula. Instead, they emasculated and deconstructed Kratos, and now we have GOW with purple butterflies, cutesy pet monsters, fighting flowers, quippy gelatinous cubes and ribbon-swords. The main character is a girl boss that's removed of any male gaze element to make a point that this game isn't for the audience that loved the original GOW.
They've utterly changed what GOW used to be about. It's got the production values for sure, but I'm not sure who this is really for. I just can't see women looking at this and thinking, yeah, this is for me, this is what I wanted, to supplant Kratos with a fridged wife so she can girl boss her way through multiple pantheons better than Kratos ever could. The juxtaposition with all the female coded softer elements you see all over the trailer and the supposedly brutal GOW combat just doesn't make any sense.
You could've made a more serious darker tone valkyrie story if you really wanted a female lead, but no, we get this GOW connected universe for the modern audiences bs instead. I'm sure this will still sell purely on graphics and production values, and people will consoom it like any other disney/marvel slop just like they've done for the other girl boss Sony sp game that's come out in the past decade. And if you don't, you're a loser incel or whatever. Vote with your wallet if you don't want every franchise you loved turn into more of this.
