We need a mario kart quality kart racing game on PC. I hope this is good
Sonic Racing Transformed has been out for like 13 years at this point and CrossWorlds is similarly very good with much better online. I've put maybe like 15 hours into MKW and like 50+ hours into Sonic CrossWorlds.

Personally, id like to see this game have a Diddy Kong Racing style story mode. That's something that really hasn't been done in a long time.

Interesting.

They can make good gameplay. Great, even.

Their weak point is character design. Yooka's character roster is anything but cool.

Of course nothing can compete with Mario Kart sales-wise and content-wise, but good gameplay, good track design, and a robust single-player mode can make any competitor worth a shot. I tried the demo for the latest Sonic racer and didn't really care for it. It just feels wrong after a decade of MK.

A kart racer where the question isn't "Who are you playing?" but "What's your build?" is a good place to start.
I think they also need to make it where fighting for 12th place is almost as fun as fighting for 1st.

Always felt Kart Racers were bad at being entertaining for anyone outside the top 5. Though, that's probably a racing game issue on the whole.

I had a feeling it was going to be a kart racer. I loved the 2D Yooka. I was impressed by the remake of the 3D platformer Yooka but I still didn't love it. Definitely an improvement though. I'm optomistic for this kart racer.

One way to solve that might be team-based racing. Instead of 12 people fighting for themselves, have three teams of 4 competing for points. Suddenly, being in 12th place still matters because you can block opponents, protect teammates, set up item plays, or go kamikaze to help your team win. Couple that with the customizable kart idea, where players can build their karts for specific roles and playstyles, and you've got the foundation for a genuinely interesting Mario Kart competitor. Speed builds, support builds, defensive builds, crowd-control builds... suddenly everyone on the track has a purpose. Honestly, I have no idea why nobody has taken a serious shot at this yet.

Edit: To be fair, I already do this in Mario Kart World. If I find myself too far back to realistically win, I start hoarding red shells and cruising until the person who's been dominating the last few races comes into range. Then I unleash the full weight of my pettiness upon them. ( Edit 2: customizes races with my kids - too bad it wont work in online since lapping is practically nonexistent).

... I mean.. If they actually designed it like Diddy Kong racing.. with an open world, secrets.. boss fights in a Kart racer...

Then maybe? But I gotta be honest Yooka Layle as a brand just sucks. I wish they would go back to the drawing board and create some different characters. The Iguana and Bat just isn't iconic.

I'm among the crowd that does not enjoy Mario Kart but loves Crash Team and Diddy Kong Racing. If Yooka Kart can recreate some of the old magic then count me in.

Someone is going to have to explain CTR to me one day. I bought the remake after all the hype around it and saying I hated it would be an understatement.

I feel the same way about Mario Kart. Not sure why I like one more than the other

You're not wrong, it's ass. It got over-glazed by fanboys because it was Sony's answer to Mario Kart / Diddy Kong Racing.

Outside of the Mario Kart franchise and Diddy Kong Racing, there's no other Kart racers really worth playing. The Sonic ones all get pumped up too for the same reason but they're "okay" at best, nothing you'll miss out on if you don't play.

I am a Mario Kart boy since the SNES game, and I can tell you CTR on the PS1 was simply magical. It walked and stomped over MK64 all the way and back again. The single-player missions were a real challenge, and couch playing with three friends was some of the best gaming time I've ever had. MK64 has always been pretty meh, but compared to CTR, it was simply laughable.

I tried the remake on Game Pass and I just didn't feel it. The controls felt way off. But truth be told, I haven't touched the PS1 version in decades. I'm just too used to the user-friendliness of MK8 now to appreciate anything with stiffer controls. Still, in its time, CTR ruled from a very high place.

Sums it up nicely. The default difficulty AI in the CTR remake dog walked me. I didn't give it a lot of time though.

Could be good if it has some of Diddy Kong Racing's DNA. Guess we'll see.
Agree. Try something different from the others. Make it like Diddy Kong Racing (I get it- it's not different as it's mimicking the past) and I'd be very excited but just another kart racer bores me.

I'm not a huge fan of CTR myself, but it's a pretty technical game where understanding a few key mechanics elevates it.
Figure out/master how to Triple boost & the Hang Time boost and you start to have fun. There's more to it, but before that you play like a handicapped child and it's no fun at all.

Then you start learning the maps which are filled with short cuts & tricks.

I had a really hard time with it too, but I never learned how to do all the advanced mechanics that the game doesn't teach you. I'd like to see it on PC, as I feel I would finally learn how to actually play it the right way.
