PS4 Players are now receiving messages and emails from PlayStation asking them to upgrade to PS5 to get ready for GTA 6

No shit, they put on their wishlist a game that literally WON'T RUN on PS4

Sony getting desperate af, as a sony games fan from mid 90s(psx obviously) who had ps4 since launchwindow(only managed to get it at msrp march 2014, demand was so crazy that retailers were doing nasty markups over msrp on their own here) and never bought ps5, i can feel sony is like that 40yo woman who just hit the wall and is noticing men stopped aproaching her and dont pay for her drinks anymore, she gets desperate enough to aproach men herself :messenger_beaming:
Ps5 sales are pretty inline with PS4 sales despite all the shortage and higher prices.
You read way too much into this, it's the marketing team that target those who put GTA 6 in their wish list to inform them they need a PS5 to play.
You didn't buy a PS5 but close to 100M people did so it's weird that you project your uncommon life decisions as a tendency.

How are the desperate? It's not like they're telling all PS4 users to upgrade, they're merely informing customers who have GTA6 wishlisted that it won't be available on PS4 and that they will need a PS5 if they want to play it.
Ikr, the guy as a grudge against Sony and think that's how everyone feel about them.

Exactly why the CEO said they didn't have a PS6 launch window

"Please buy our PS5 stock first"
Eh, isn't that kind of idiotic tho? They're just delaying the problem a couple of years at best, the moment those who didn't upgrade yet because they saw no reason (price or enough exclusive games to actually care about upgrading), go to PS5 and the PS6 is around the corner, they'll have the same problem again, those on PS5, why the hell would move to a PS6? And that's without counting the absolute fact that everything is going to be cross-gen for years...

0 chance. At that 6 years into next gen Sony in planning to sunset PS4 support and make people buy a new console.
Just thinking that would be easy money for a huge amount of players that supposedly never moved over. Maybe if it was cut down enough it could be called GTA 5 and half.

Disagree here, ps5 has extremly weak competition compared to ps4( prices of pc hardware, xbox series total bust, switch2 barely has any exclusives yet on top of being weaker from series s) and it still is doing worse than ps4, ps4 would be 120m units by now(with its exclusives and 250$ in its 3rd and 200$ price in its 4rd year) ;)

If the have 650$ ready for PS5, they can as well save more, wait for Q4 2027 and buy PS6 for 800-1000$

They will have access to all PS5 and PS6 games.

Do you think most people think that far ahead and are good with money?

Many people are paying over $600 a month on brand new cars they can't afford and will never own.

A large amount of people will charge it to their credit card and not think twice about it.

Yeah, most people will do what you just described.

But some folks will definitely wait, buying console that soon will be replaced is not the smartest choice (unless it has a low price, and this is not the case for PS5 and Pro).

I don't see the big issue, makes sense.

While that sounds reasonable, if the average person was able to just go "I'll wait a year or more to play this insanely hyped new game" the industry would collapse.
A lot of gaming purchases are very FOMO driven, and there are few entertainment products that will generate as much FOMO as GTA6.

They think ppl who didnt buy ps5 at launch for much less will buy one now when ps6 is around the corner, its simply terrible value, obviously many of us might do it for gta6(but not with base ps5, rather with pr0) but it will be one of 2 things- u buy gta6 with pr0 only to sell them both after month or two, or wait for ps6/pc version and get it there instead.

Playstation wont get mountain of devoted ps5 customers coz of gta6 hype, they give us simply not enough value with their old outdated and expensive console, ps6 will be much better deal even at 999$.

They currently have access to PS4+PS5 games if they buy a PS5 and didn't care yet, I don't know why they would care about a PS6 access to backwards compatibility if there isn't enough games of said gen to actually care about upgrading or a price that's reasonble, $800 is not reasonable for a console, let alone $1k

GTAVI is a one in a gen kind of thing, same way as GTAV, it can move units, but once it does, people get hooked to that game in that system for years, it's what happened with the PS4 outpacing the PS3 version and I'm damn sure the Enhaced Edition didn't have the same effect for the PS5, so an Enhaced Edition for PS6 won't do much, unless it's spectacular and has enough differentiation to be a must have again

These late generation price hikes are gonna just make more early adopters next gen. Launch price will be a steal by comparison

I applaud the gamers that resisted the marketing and fake hype and still didn't make the jump.

PS5 has been so not worth it and i definitely regret buying it.

It does reek of desperation.
I mean I'm sure Rockstar and Take 2 know how many users are on PS4. They want people to upgrade just as much as Sony and Playstation. GTA6 colors are now appearing on the Playstation store too. Marketing for this game will be starting soon.

Seems really early for this.

But this might be confirmation November is a lock for gta6 release.

I can't fucking wait for GTA6 to come out so I can stop fucking hearing about it all the god damn time. I am not buying that trash.

Same. I'm not a huge GTA guy, and I don't think GTA6 is going to do the mega-massive long-term sales people think, nor will it give a super-fat boost to console sales. 'Ya know, since people have known the game was coming since Late 2023, and have been buying PS5s (and Xboxes, to a lesser extent) for it since that time.

Ironically if price drops on consoles were still a thing, THEN you'd get that massive surge in console sales with GTA6's release. But SIE have zero incentive to do that this time around: why lose money on the hardware when your cut from GTA6 sales remains the same, and the people buying a PS5 at this point would likely be the super-casual only getting it for GTA6 and maybe a couple other games?

If GTA6 had released on time, then it'd be a bit different since it'd release at the ramp-up to the apex in PS5 sales lifetime-wise. That's not the case anymore; it's releasing at the ass-end of the sales curve when (I'd say) 90% of would-be GTA6 owners and probably 85-90% of all would-be PS5 owners already have their consoles. The dynamics don't favor a massive surge in system sales whatsoever.

PS5's greatest enemy is PS4. Let's see how much GTA moves the needle.

It's already been moving the needle though, that's the thing. A large chunk of PS5s getting sold over the past 2+ years have been doing so on the hype of GTA6. It's not like people will only suddenly start buying PS5s for GTA6 once it actually releases; that could only happen if GTA were an unknown quantity and blew up into a viral sensation, which hasn't been the case since GTA3 back on PS2.

In terms of PS5 sales increases, I'd expect something nominally better than the upticks PS5 had in Japan when FFVII Rebirth and Monster Hunter released. Scale that for the American market, maybe give it a 10% bump, and there you go. But you also have to factor in the effect of the price increases; I'm assuming SIE might run a small sales promo for PS5 when GTA6 releases, but nothing significant.

And that hardware bump will only last for the launch month and maybe the one thereafter, especially if GTA6 releases in November. There's not going to be an explosion of PS5 sales when GTA6 launches.

Why would a person who didn't buy a PS5 at launch suddenly buy a PS6 at launch though? I'm not saying it can't happen but most people either buy systems at launch, or wait a bit (for slim or pro models), they don't really switch it up. But anyway, like I said, they're only reaching out to people who have GTA6 preordered and have a PS4 and no PS5. It makes sense to inform them as such because plenty of people are either uninformed or dumb.

1.5 years before PS6 launch:

"upgrade now to PS5" LOL

You know why people didn't upgrade Sony? Because they were waiting for price drops and exclusives... they got just few exclusives and even bigger prices hahaha.
Sony has gone over to the dark side of the force.

These are the people that's been using PS4 in PS5 era.

I see nothing strange about them using PS5 in PS6 era :messenger_beaming:

I am sometimes embarrassed to be a gamer. The bigger story here is GTA6 seems to be locked in. Sony doing marketing is not only expected, but smart. Asha needs to get some XBSX on the shelves and do the same. It's the last big chance for pushing this gen consoles. Anyone thinking GTA6 will not move consoles is ignoring history. Price might impact how many move but it will be a significant number.

Sony has marketing rights, Asha can't mention GTA6 in anything.

Should've sent it last November when the PS5 got a big discount.

Hence the desperate part. PS5 sales were down 50% even before the price hikes.

Closer to the game's release would work better, IMO. But I think most PS4 gamers won't upgrade if they haven't already, and GTA 6 might end up 'flopping' as a result.
