Fallout: New Vegas Dev Warns Not To Get Excited For A Remaster
Bethesda may have a hard time remastering New Vegas because it lacks the critical source code, according to Chris Avellone.
Former New Vegas dev Chris Avellone has warned fans that they shouldn't hold on to hope, as the studio may not have the means to make a New Vegas remaster, even if it wanted to. It seems Obsidian Entertainment never really gave Bethesda the source code it would require to recreate the game with current technology.
In an interview with TKs-Mantis (via GamesRadar), Avellone, who worked on the original game as a senior designer, said, "I don't think Bethesda has the engineering knowhow to make a remaster of New Vegas at all." He revealed that Bethesda apparently asked Obsidian to deliver the source code for the game, but CEO Feargus Urquhart reportedly didn't accept the $10,000 that Bethesda offered.
"They may have aspects of the code," he added, "But everyone that I talked to after that period of time said they had no idea how to reassemble it." He went on to explain some of the hoops that Bethesda tried jumping through for the remaster, but was ultimately unsuccessful. Even the fact that Microsoft now owns both companies won't help with this scenario.
Of course, there are still ways that Bethesda could possibly work around the lack of a source code. TKs-Mantis pointed out that for Oblivion Remastered, the devs resorted to "taking the Creation Engine game and then they're wrapping Unreal 5 around it," and that same process might be followed for the Fallout 3 remaster. Avellone agreed, saying, "I think that could be one of the only ways they could do it."
