Marathon approaching 15k CCU low (sponsored by coachmcguirk91 - still having a blast)

"Extraction can do Battle Royale"

It can do everything.

Any bump will get the evangelist/shill journalist and Men_in_Boxes Men_in_Boxes coming in here and proclaiming the game is saved no matter how short lived it is before it then declines again.
I think you need to see at least a full week of uptrends before claiming any kind of resurgence.

It still doesn't fix one of the most glaring problems that is needed for Gaas games and that is the art of the characters is ass. They can sell you maps and other mtx, but I just don't see a large portion of the population wanting to buy skins for this.

Mischaracterization. I don't think the game is saved, I think it has a significantly better chance than the majority of the usual suspects proclaim.

Y'all want it to be dead so badly, but it's not.

The reason why everyone is wrong about Marathons long term chances is because, unlike in Concord or Call of Duty, you can theory craft a million ways to improve upon its PvP.

That said, it is odd how this idea of losing being fun, isn't a primary design pillar in every PvP studio across the globe.

We can all theorycraft but that code doesn't write itself. And the game is so barebones I'm wondering if this is all the engine can support without major mods. Like reduce the time in game, limit teams would immediately help with matchmaking and gank squads.

You can PvP but its going to cost you time. Time actually looting. Also harder to find people if fewer people about. 8 minute runs - omg now time is the enemy!! So many easy things to do

Many shitgames has the servers on, they are still dead though. Hell even Ashes of Creation has the servers on and that one is stonedead.

Valid concerns. There is a flying supply box in the game that appears to be flying at 30fps (or less) on base PS5. I have wondered if ARC Raiders engine is just superior.

That said, if Paul Tassi reported that morale is fine on the Marathon team, that tells me that they know they're relatively safe for the time being and Sony understands the game has potential. It's in Early Access to me.

No, it's absurd. This is the same company (in name) that spent 3 years making Halo 3 with a full campaign, a full multiplayer suite with tons of modes and maps, a level editor, and an arcade mode with scoring.

This is a single game mode and 4 maps.

I'd like to add to this that this was also the Bungie that was practically God tier when it came to giving out multiplayer stats and information. I remember being able to go to Bungie's website, see detailed match information for every single match I played, heat maps for where most combat took place, full breakdowns on what weapons got used and where, and a full suite of individualized stats for each player.

Those were the days.
Now we're lucky to get vague updates and half-assed roadmaps.

You can still do that with Destiny 2

Uh oh. Either people got their fill during the big patch and tailed off, or something happened.

1 pm completed hour. Cryo days are ALWAYS a gainer vs yesterday. it may start high and tail off, but it'll still end up in the positive when US peak is finalized.

But the 1 pm stats shows 15.5k today. And yesterday 15.6k. So flat. It's possible it ends down today.

Last week's 1 pm maintenance day was 16.7k.

It became a sweat fest. Only a certain amount of people can tolerate that and even some of the hard-core get fed up.

That's my opinion.

I believe I can present a theory that fits.

I think the bleed didn't stop for the patch. However, a separate group came back and disguised the bleed for a couple of days as they trailed off and now that the returners are mostly gone the true bleed is showing back thru.

No improvement in 2 pm hour. Still trailing yesterday same hour at -100. So flat.

Given cryo trend down from launch hour to end of day I'll estimate it'll be down 5%. So about 23k or so.

Looks like we`re nearing the end here. Marathon has already become pretty much irrelevant.
Next ist that Horizon Garbage which will probably be completely DoA and then Fairgames.

All that I get is that Cryo is not bringing players to the game.

We might need to see if Friday brings some players back, but it is not looking so hot right now.

Now, I can't wait for Fairgames' thread.

Big Marathon fan here. I probably ran Cryo 12 or so times.

I have no desire to run it again, as it's currently constructed. They f***ed that part of the game up bad.

I could actually see them turning things around with this pivot, "divisive" art style notwithstanding. I mean, if the gunplay is solid enough to make the moment to moment gameplay fun and keep players engaged, it might actually find success as a Battle Royale. The move worked wonders for Fortnite.

Extraction is really more of a mode masquerading as a genre anyway. And it's just too hardcore and niche of a mode to be able to support multiple big titles simultaneously. There's a limited audience that finds joy in uber-competitive, masochistic, grindy gank-fests. BR, with its round resets and random nature, is much more inviting and friendly to a broad audience.

Whether it lives or dies is really all going to hinge on how solid the core gunplay and gamefeel are. If they can find a decent mode (or "genre") to go with that core, they might just make it…

=P

Here's a cookie for using the thesaurus to find a synonym for 'weird' 🍪. Marathon needs more high IQ people like you for it to survive.
I expect a lot of high IQ people are in the "let it all burn" camp. They are more likely to want cerebral thought provoking stories, and worlds to explore than to be mindlessly playing the same handful of levels on repeat for thousands of hours that is practically every Gaas. (Gaming equivalent of TikTok brain rot)

Side note:
I may have been a little harsh, from my circle, where there's a substantive high IQ (I'm just a mid 130) with Mensa people, data scientists etc, there's also a lot of autism. And we autists can certainly find repetition comforting…many of them tho are just locked into slay the spire 2.

So the new Destiny 2 xpak and Marathon S2 are both launching in June?
Manager Jeffrey GIF by Aan & Matig

Maybe they will delay Destiny 2 xpak? There is definitely huge crossover in those audiences.

Who genius came up with the idea of charging for GAAS upfront? Specially when there's no single player content. This game, based on reviews of those who have played it, would have a thriving community by now of there was no entry .

9 pm completed hour CCU. Peak reached just after 10 pm. Cryo day was +2%. Every cryo day has been a positive %
All time peak was launch day 88.3k. Today's peak at 25k is -63.3k or -72%

Today vs yesterday: 25k vs 24.5k (+0.5k or +2%)

Yesterday's low 6.9k. If the rate holds, low tonight will be 7k

Thu vs Thu: 25k vs 26.9k (-1.9k or -7%)

Cryo day squeaked out a +2%. It had been oddly flat hourly all day +/- a % or two. Typically, cryo day starts hot in the afternoon and slows down. But this time it was simply pretty flat all day. Fridays are usually a good day (excluding the first Friday after launch and Good Friday where it seemed everyone stacked playing Thursday night), so we'll see what happens tomorrow. But dont be surprised if tomorrow is a +5%

Alternate method to estimate peaks and valleys (ballpark ratios)
On normal weekdays, 3:1. For example, a peak 30k will have a low of 10k. For Fri/Sat, gamers stay up playing so the ratio is 2.5:1

Lowest bump for a Cryo day so far.
It would've been hilarious if it was flat or even a dip since it had a patch this week.

EDIT: Had to restate my stats above. Looks like the CCU rebounded a bit more to 25k. That was a weird one. It had leveled off and dropped about 100 people from 24.8k t 24.7k. Then 10-15 min later rebounded up 25k. I dont think I've ever seen that when the peak settles around 10 pm or so.

Cryo bump days

1st +18% (launch)
2nd +3%
3rd +12% (Good Friday next day)
4th +6%
5th +2%

Typical daily weekday attrition rate is around -5%. String a bunch of these together, then add a positive Friday and a weekend that kind of holds and there's your avg week over week -20%.

If you exclude launch week where lots of gamers jumped on to try it out, and assuming the +12% was an partial Easter holiday bump, it can be ballparked a -5% Thursday under normal attrition leads to a small gainer due to cryo. So cryo Thursday effect is maybe a +7 to 10%.

Damn, at 24,999 it was obviously just 1 person away from making it to a 25k peak.

Regardless, nice little bump Wed night even if Cryo doesn't seem to be helping much overall anymore.
