Marathon approaching 15k CCU low (sponsored by coachmcguirk91 - still having a blast)

Funny thing is everyone here as far as I know is respecting the OT "safe space" ... nobody is shit talking the game there... i think this makes them even more frustrated somehow.
I got thread-banned for going into the OT to stir things up

All because some idiot attacked me in the review thread, then scuttled off to the OT to whine like a scared little dog. Thought he'd be safe there

Not that it matters but I don't think an OT should be a safe haven. Criticism belongs there as well.

They are niche of a niche there, plenty space for h8rs like us here in ccu topic :D

I'm not one of "them." I don't even play it and never will - i even predicted the flop a long time ago. But going over 100 pages to celebrate the game dying is starting to feel a bit obsessive.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Marathon. The PvP is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the firefights will go over a typical player's head. There's also Bungie's woke outlook, which is deftly woven into the design- their personal philosophy draws heavily from DEI, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of this game, to realise that they're not just fun- they say something deep about having a blast. As a consequence people who dislike Marathon truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the beauty in the shells agender design, which itself is a cryptic reference to Anita Sharkesian's "everything is sexist" speech. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Bungie's genius wit unfolds itself on their monitors. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂

And yes, by the way, i DO have a Marathon tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎

I like to think we aren't simply watching it die, but actively killing it. Why else are people begging us to stop?

Truth is bungie/sony themselfs killed the game by making sure it has 0 potential to attract(and even more important retain) sizeable chunk of playerbase. We are just watching them commiting sepukku here :messenger_sunglasses:

A lot of players probably want to quit but don't want to see us get a win with the CCU so they are forcing themselves to keep playing.

In a way, they are trying to extract but we are camping them.

We aren't even playing Marathon but we are camping Marathon players.

I think this may be a first in gaming.

No way, bro, playing game u not enjoy playing is pure torture, whoever plays marathon still likes doing so, maybe they could do it hour once then coz of that their hate would build up even more and next time they would be even more disgusted by a simple thought of playing it :D

Really, the cheaters that Bungie is looking the other way for are having a blast.

4 pm completed hour CCU
All time peak was launch day 88.3k. Yesterday's peak 28.3k is -60k or -68%

Today vs yesterday: 21.2k vs 22.9k (-1.7k or -7.4%)

Yesterday's peak 28.3k. If the rate holds, peak tonight will be 26.2k

Yesterday's low 8.6k. If the rate holds, low tonight will be 8k

Alternate method to estimate peaks and valleys (ballpark ratios)
On normal weekdays, 3:1. For example, a peak 30k will have a low of 10k. For Fri/Sat, gamers stay up playing so the ratio is 2.5:1

Steam Rankings
Daily Active Users 81
Global Top Sellers 59
Weekly Top Sellers 41 (was 32 last week)
Top Rated Games 5,464 (84.71%)

Steam rankings dropping like a rock. Weekly ranking updated for Apr 7

Just some fun graph nuances.

Looks like the dropping CCUs are affecting the Euro to US transition hour numbers. This is roughly 5-7 pm EST on weekdays. This is when UK/Euro gamers start heading to bed and east coast US/Can gamers are still getting home or eating dinner. Starting about 7 pm is when CCU rises rest of night as the peak is reached somewhere at 10-11 pm EST.

But the weekday transition hours for the first 3 weeks always had a climbing CCU even during transition hours. The trend would slow down but still go up. Now, it flattens out or declines before the US gamers get online after dinner. So the crumbling CCUs dont have enough gamers to prop up the transition hours.

The red box trend extends to earlier weekdays too. I just did a smaller snip so the chart doesnt get too crowded.

According to those new Bluesky tweets, looks like they are taking care of cheaters. So maybe they are getting on it. And thats why the CCU dropped like a rock lately where even the weekend cant even maintain a flat CCU.

It's gone down everyday since Thursday's cryo pop (on track for another daily loss today). Even a holiday weekend couldnt prop it up to even flat.

I've never worked in gaming, but there's got to be no doubt in these studios some kind of cheater ratio they purposely will tolerate. Like some analyst dude says if cheaters are no more than let's say 8% of users, that's a safe enough pool where honest gamers stick around while retaining the 8% cheater portion making the CCU look good and filling servers with matches. But when the ratio gets worse, then they'll finally act on it to get it back to 8%.

Yeah I cant remember another safe space OT ... I can be wrong though .... and I think equally people driving by to shit post here not touching the subject should be thread banned too ... seems only fair... but than again is fun watching the meltdowns and tantrums

Sorry dude, but it's not just a 'mode' if done right.
Look at Tarkov and Arc.
Tarkov that added a bunch of PvE and permanent progression and Arc Raiders that is 90% PvE? The entire genre started as a "mode" and that's how it's always been best. Hell, even Bungie knew this, they just couldn't manage to put it together.
People like to hate on games more than they like to play them at this point. People start bitching months before games even release. Best bet is to just ignore all the drama threads.
Taking a few seconds a few times a day to shit on a game doesn't impact what people play at all. I'm pushing triple digits in Crimson Desert, played through Requiem twice, and have played a half dozen other games since marathon launched. Playing games is still my hobby, shitting on Bungie in my downtime is just a side quest.

This is the biggest head scratcher of them all. Bungie has been making online games since forever. Their last game was an absolute cheat fest and they assured everyone things would be different this time. Marathon releases and nothing has changed, they still have cheaters through the roof.

It's almost like when they said they had to make Destiny 2 because their Destiny 1 engine couldn't handle more content. And then they had to delete a bunch of content from Destiny 2 because of the same reason.

Repeating the same mistakes seems to be a core value at this company.

Checking the comments on the Taul Passi. Ngl, the level of defensiveness on this game is kind of unnerving and it's good it is being called out.

Real question, why are people going out of their way to defend this game like it was a blood relative? I mean, it makes it funnier to dunk on its dwindling numbers but it's bizarre.

depends on the individual:

From pro-woke retards to people trying to make a living as Marathon content creators, to those who seem to need validation and can't accept enjoying something that isn't very good

Math looks bad...

If those estimates are anywhere near accurate, the losses on this game will be legendary.

Rumours are $250M + marketing. For sake of argument let's be a touch low and say $300M all in.

Game sold 1.2M copies. 80% on Steam/Xbox which has cuts. 20% they get the entire $40.

Max revenue $48M on copies sold. I'm too lazy to do the math, but take off cuts and add in some mtx sales since launch and any tidbits of extra copies sold since that tweet. You probably got no more than $50M in total net revenue.

They are already a good $250M in the hole. And the CCU is dropping, and sales must be slim pickings. So any daily revenue from new sales and mtx are going to be going down as the game trends down. But if the Marathon staff is kept whole it's be a monthly loss going forward making the $250M hole larger.

I really dont think this game sold 1.2 mil copies

This exists in almost every online game, this is no surprise tbh

Some people have to pay for their blasts, sad
Holy fucking shit.. I honestly didnt know about this ...its been years since I played anything online and that was uncharted 4...
I didnt think my opinion of gaas could get any lower... damn pathetic

Going to be interesting to see how the cheating aspect plays into furthering the game's decline.

I haven't followed up too much on it, but it seems that it was pretty damned rampant and Bungie's response didn't seem to generate much confidence.

If you're only running into super sweats or cheaters, that's not good for longevity on a game that seems to still be shedding players and hasn't quite hit a level where that has kind of stopped.

Funny thing is ever since people got amped up when Gamerlytics stated Marathon had 977k sales on Steam after the first week, they changed it to about 800k ever since then. It's been that number (maybe +/- 20k) for probably 3 weeks in a row. It's now at 791k.

And all the hypsters trying to boost that original 977k saying console sales are 50/50 so it should match the 977k turns out console sales are only 30%.

I wouldnt be surprised if sales are less than 1.2M as you said. Given what you read and the top played/sold PS and Xbox rankings, I dont even think PS/Xbox collectively sold about 360k as per estimates. The rankings are so low, it's like a rounding error. How would it sell something like 120k copies on Xbox when it was ranked I think 70th on Xbox top games. And now people say it's around 100th or whatever.

because they are sick of the incredibly common chud victories

They sorta torture themselves with it I feel, like for example I have games I like that aren't darlings... Like I don't think Starfield is a bad awful game but I know some pin it as shit and there's nothing I'm gonna do to change their mind so I just am more selective when I engage, but I'm not gonna just frustrate myself tryin to convince people that can't be convinced it's a decent game.

The funny thing about when people bring up toxic behavior, I don't think busting Balls or critiquing a game is toxic but people tryin to silence people from those things is what's toxic.
