Marathon |OT| A Shell of its Former Self.

Once you understand you're just holding loot for the next guy until you die it'll all make sense.
I couldn't agree more. Don't look at your loot as a physical object that you treasure, everything is just there to get you through each round.
Use the Rook as it is ingenious because it allows you to jump into a couple of rounds and stock up again.
Also rank up each faction and you unlock free valuables each day.
Remember, when you get looted there is nothing stopping you from looting others and at some point you're going to gain one of these prestige items from someone who probably spent weeks trying to get it themselves, it's all just on loan, you own absolutely nothing and remember that you are playing one of the greatest MP games ever made.

Have Bungie said anything about a new mission structure for the next season and wipe?
Hopefully the wipe wont make current players who have completed most of the faction missions repeat them.

we got all the loot. We finished the contracts. We made it to the exfil at the last second.
We all got one-shotted.
I don't know if I'm playing any more today.

It would be cool if they made new contracts, but I doubt it. Normally extraction shooter wipes mean you have to do all the quests again.

But it definitely would be nice if they threw a few curveballs in.

You keep your factions. You have to start over respec

What You Keep (Persistent)
  • Cosmetics: All earned and paid skins, runner shells, and customization items.
  • Accomplishments: Achievements, titles, and specific seasonal milestone rewards.
  • Lore & Secrets: Your Codex progression carries over, meaning any discovered logs or world secrets remain unlocked.
  • Faction Access: Liaison contract progression is permanent. You will not need to re-unlock access to the different factions each season.
  • Battle Pass Rewards: Unlike most games, Marathon's "Battle Passes" are permanent, allowing you to continue unlocking rewards even after a season ends.

What You Lose (Reset Every Season)
  • Inventory & Vault: All weapons, mods, gear, and stored loot in your vault are wiped.
  • Player & Faction Level: Your overall player level and specific faction reputation ranks reset to zero.
  • Stats & Upgrades: Any power-based upgrades, such as increased vault space or statistical buffs to your Runner shell, are reset.
  • Contract Progress: Active contracts and mission progression within a season's specific storyline are cleared.

People are starting to learn the game now. Vigilance is required. Some of the extracts are horrible and encourage camping by design.

Traxus has the absolute worst sponsored kit lol

I'd rather go in holding a stick.

Big Mida Multi Tool fan over here. Something about the base hardline just feels off. Same with base Bully.
The Hardline definitely needs attachments to shine properly but even the base version can shred UESC which I like.

Both the Hardline and Bully are better than the piece of shit that is the Overrun AR. That gun is fucking terrible without blue attachments IMO.

Overrun is terrible even with blue attachments tbh.

Thing is, I don't even have any idea if it was a team camping the exfil, a crazy rook, or just some insane UESC. 😭

I've still only played Triage so far. Got all the skins for it, should probably try something else I guess. I'm just not really one to use grubby invisible or sneaky like characters though. Destroyer looks fun so might check it out next.

That last one means there is new story missions each season so no repeating. Thank god

I would adore that. Unlocking basic factions and repeating boring quests are the worst part of the genre. I'll believe it when I see it since Arc walked back it's workbench unlock when the wipe actually came around. I may actually do all missions if it's going to be an ongoing storyline.

Why can't we report players in game?

I got shot through cover. 0 way to see me. Robots fully ignored a destroyer.

I want to be able to report it and let Bungie see if someone is actually cheating cuz it sure as shit felt that way just now.

Ranked is legit good. 3k is a good buy in ante, and I'm carrying more and more games. Never ceases to amaze me how many times I can 1v1 a purple shied bum with my green shields. 😂

I hopped into a solos match on Outpost. Within 30 seconds some guy is shooting me 20 yards behind me and missing every shot. I turn around and kill him with M77 Assault rifle. I just hear him on mic "OMG THE OVERUN GUN SUCKS SO MUCH ASS" as I finish him. That gun is so bad with no upgrades. No chance

I mean afaik it only costs 100 in the store, what did he expect?

But if he cannot kill you from behind it is rather a skill issue than an issue with the Overrun AR.

I think aesthetic plays more of a role in people's perception of tension and difficulty than is acknowledged. Game design language leans heavily on dark and moody settings to convey difficulty. One naturally decides to be more careful if they see a boss covered in skulls or are walking through a creaking old farmhouse. Marathon's striking color palette brings to mind fast paced games like Fortnite and Apex which naturally draw a more casual crowds. The Cycle: Frontier was an extraction shooter with a bright sci-fi aesthetic with a high degree of mobility that generated similar discussions about tension and difficulty. Lower skill players would post clips of themselves walking obliviously into a chokepoint or other bad situation and ask "what could I have done"? I played 30-ish extracts worth of Marathon over the weekend and find it as difficult and tense as anything I've played. Marathon just expresses that difficulty in different ways.

Tarkov's difficulty is functionally a massive knowledge check. Knowing what guns, ammo, attachments, meds, etc to take and how to use them without thinking. Memorization of loot locations, fastest routes through maps, and exfils plays a massive role in being successful. The game becomes easier over time since matchmaking is purely based on raid availability; a player with better gear faces fewer potential challengers due to the way armor and ammo work.

Arc Raider's difficulty comes from a combination of TPP and additional raider spawns. Stealth isn't really a thing since everything is loud. Using a healing item, reloading, or even opening a container can be heard throughout a large part of a POI. TPP makes setting an ambush leveraging the camera's ability to see around corners the optimal play. Simply being able to understand where people may be hiding and how to safely enter the area drastically improves your extract rate. Gunplay is secondary to positioning and awareness given that you're basically guaranteed to down somebody if you see them first. Winning a fight brings no rest since the noise will attract a stream of third parties since everybody you kill is replaced by a new player who now has an incentive to fight since they entered mid-raid.

Marathon's difficulty and tension come from each POI functionally being an arena shooter map. The layouts are vertical with numerous ways to get around, perches to snipe from, and pixel peek spots. The game forces you to learn the core concepts of extraction shooters while also expecting you to be prepared to play a round of quake or halo at any moment. Any lapse in awareness ends with you being deleted. Its brutal. The shooting mechanics and pace of combat are unusually quick which exacerbates the learning curve. I fully understand why people get frustrated since nobody had attempted putting a proper shooter into their extraction shooter until now. Its like being forced to master two different instruments at once.

And never try to TAD an Assassin, I *will* come for you lol

I'm pretty up and down with this game right now, but I figured out it's just because it's so exhausting. Took a small break from it this weekend (only played maybe 4 or 5 hours Fri - Sun total), maybe I needed it to come back refreshed.

I know people say you're just "holding" the loot for the next guy but I'm too competitive for that to be okay to me lol. I replay scenarios in my head where I fucked up and what I could have done, and it fucking bothers the shit out of me. The player base has definitely swung to the sweaty side, and as others have been saying the lower skill players are dropping off and now you have to be on your toes almost 100% of the time.

Outpost still makes my heart rate skyrocket, gonna really have to get some Rook runs in to learn the map and get comfy with it. Maybe give Cryo a try next weekend when I get some better overall gear.

Anyway that's my current state of mind. I should be back on to group up with you guys later tonight EST.

You would be replaying losses in your head regardless of game. It's the mark of a good competitive player. Gear being temporary is only half the equation. Your individual runs are immaterial against the wipe. Learn to think of a wipe as a 3 month game of CS or similar and find ways to increase your aggregate score over time.

Oh man you would have had a heart attack playing with us last night 😂 on one match Clarky got killed while looting a little away from us, I downed 2 and couldn't manage the third, the other unknown gaffer hid in a vent and waited until the team buggered off and then rezzed us.

It was like a horror movie in spectator mode.

Really enjoyed it. Absolutely terrible start but we did alright in the end.

Cryo Archive is a map that highly encourages 3 player pre made groups. And yet, it has 0 game mechanics that take advantage of that fact.

That map should ditch the corridor obsessed level design and give teams different strategic objectives to talk about. Have 3 players hack into a terminal to solve a cooperative puzzle that unlocks a door. Give one player a schematics map that let's him tell the other 2 where to go...

That map should be Disney World.

Terrible idea. The game isn't Destiny, its a pvp centred extraction shooter, there's too many mechanics in that map as is.

Last thing i need is it being super complicated and needing a lfg mic'd up must have 20 clears to apply sweatfest alienating even more of the player base.

If anything it should ditch the RNG tokens and go simpler, not the other way.
