Asha Sharma: Next Xbox Project Name: "Helix" - Will 'lead in performance and play your Xbox and PC games'

How do they know it will lead in performance though?

Theyll be comparing it to the PS5 Pro?

Also the chips have been leaked to high heaven, its a pretty safe bet the Magnus Chip will be the better performer................................................................................on paper.

What an insane statement

Yeah…. Ok

I'm sure they have zero desire to grow and are content on just spending millions to appease their rapidly shrinking Gamepass fan base lol
Its not just Gamepass though, although yes Gsmepass needs hardware right now.
Its ther millions of Xbox gamers that have Xbox accounts fuill of games, dlc, mtx, etc they have bought over the years.

There was always going to be some kind of Xbox coming.

...why would anyone ever buy the Xbox version of a game?

You wouldn't. Most people would buy games from Steam or GoG.

Microsoft therefore lose a massive revenue stream.

Two ways they could fix this. First, lock access to third party stores behind gamepass, which means guaranteed regular revenue from all customers.

Second, make the hardware very expensive to factor in the lost revenue from game sales.

Or do both.

This is a good point. It's free to play PC games online. PC games have adjustable graphics settings. You can even play PC games on another PC.
It costs money to play Xbox games online. Xbox games don't have adjustable graphics settings. You can't play an Xbox game you purchased on a PC.

...why would anyone ever buy the Xbox version of a game?
?? The BC feature means not having to buy games you already own in a catalog you've built up over years and years...

If there's one thing Xbox has been known for, it's been its excellence in BC, and therefore, those games will surely play in better conditions when played on the new hardware.

Besides, you have Play Anywhere games, and you can choose which version to download for free.

The BC feature is primarily about attracting users from the existing Xbox ecosystem. And certainly, on this new Xbox, that aspect will be better and offer more options than ever before.

Regarding the games designed for this new hardware, it is assumed that those available in their store will be better optimized for that hardware and with special features than those in other stores.

I don't understand the idea behind only launching a $1000+ system. If you want your console user base to stick around then there needs to be an option in the $500-700 range, even if the performance bump is modest.

Yeah - it's gonna be stronger. Will that matter to sales and game support? Who knows...

Xbox and PC games doesn't necessarily mean other stores since Microsoft sells both Xbox and PC games. Still a lot of questions

AMD hinted at multiple SoCs being developed for Microsoft. I absolutely expect them to release a low end version that's roughly on par with the PS6 Portable, but as a small box instead of a handheld.

Wouldn't that be a huge, HUGE gap between both machines?

Yeah, this may only mean "everyone get excited for Microsoft Store on console!" Maybe they try to cripple Linux versions of their first party published games. That way they're still on PC without supporting Steam OS, functionally exclusive to Microsoft platforms. IDK, it's a lot to infer from their new leader's tweet alone.

Do we know how they are doing the backward-compatible thing on it yet?

Can't really call it an xbox if it doesn't work with the full catalog or whatever

Yea we'll see.

Good thing is, Xbox definitely has something to prove. So I'm interested in seeing if they can go all out with this new management.

Bad thing is, I imagine Asha is just a younger, female Satya Nadella, who I have zero faith in.

Show us what this thing is, also show us what "a return to xbox" even means. That's not just hardware. Need to see a paradigm shift in management of projects, how the studios are managed, cutting of the fat and realization of some killer game ideas that may take some time to come to fruition, understandably.

I don't want an extension of this generation. That what this generation was for both Xbox and Playstation. Give me a clear divide. Power alone isn't gonna do that.

Always interested in new hardware from Xbox. I can honestly say, though, if the price rumors are anywhere close to true, I'll be a late-adopter, at best.

If this plays xbox entire catalog + pc games+ free online + they actually make a couple of good games, it would be amazing. But somehow they will fumble.

To clarify, what I mean is that I think Sony went with weak specs (esp power consumption) because of the handheld.
We have this to go by.

And we have SteamDeck to go by as well. Issue mainly with lower spec systems were RAM configuration mainly.

Theyll be comparing it to the PS5 Pro?

Safe to assume it will be fully compatible with the entire Xbox library, but we don't know for sure yet. Details next week hopefully.

There's not much point in buying an Xbox Series X now when MS has truly given up on its current gen offering and sees project Helix as "the return of Xbox".

We'll see 18 months of cratering Xbox sales, Xbox Series will be completely dead outside of the US at the end of 2027 -- and yet somehow Xbox will rise to prominence again after many years of structural negligence? Xbox is a glutton for punishment if they believe that. Or they hope Xbox fans think like this:

Dang, we went from those E3 big announcements to a screenshot on X. I just want good games. Sounds cool to have a PC library to utilize. i think I'd just continue saving for my PC.

I'm really curious how they plan on doing that without any sort of virtualization but I am guessing it's something to do with the AMD chip

So you don't think you'll be able to access steam on this new console?

It will run all the stores

I have said for about 2 years the next gen "console" would run Steam but this thing sounds more and more like a PC with Xbox BC baked in
