[Bloomberg] Sony Pulls Back From PlayStation Games on PC (Ghost of Yotei port and other internally developerd games scrapped)

What? It's not nonsense. If you're on PC and you're comfortable with PC, why would you buy anything that you can get on PC, on ps5?
There are absolutely no upsides.
People who play on PC usually want everything on Steam, even switching to another launcher is annoying, so having games stuck on a whole other system? That won't happen at all for most PC gamers.

Also less settings, no mods, less support for various controllers (or keyboard and mouse), higher prices for games, paid online, etc etc etc...

The only situation where it would be possible is if someone is somehow tired of PC and just want a convenient setup on a TV, completely giving up on PC.
it's Sony's job to make the PS5 as attractrive a place as possible and try to convince those people otherwise.

Instead by porting their games to PC they were basically saying they could never do that, which is dumb. It's dumb because they are competitors, Valve seems to understand that, they want PC gamers buying a Steam Machine instead of moving to PS5!

PC has no exclusives. They should buy consoles if they are on a budget. they wouldnt lose out on any exclusives this way.

I was looking at some numbers and pc gamers are still rocking 3060s and 3060 Tis. They are willing to pay $399 on these terrible PS5 quality cards. They should be able to buy a console for $500. Or even the pro for $700 now that cerny has finally fixed PSSR.

Sony spends an insane amount of money on exclusives because they want everyone to buy games on their platform. They want everyone to buy their platform, their subscriptions, and peripherals. Nvidia and AMD do not fund any game development whatsoever. Epic invested in a game once and everyone on PC rejected it to the point Remedy had to bring in a gambling CEO to get their affairs in order. The best thing Nvidia has done is invest in 1-2 path tracing games a year that run well on maybe 3-4 cards that cost upwards of $1000 on their own. Hardly pro consumer.

I can promise you if MS hadnt ported everything to PC, they would still be alive and have a console that sells 50-60 million a generation. Not great, not terrible, but they would still be a player Sony would be concerned with. With MS effecitvely bowing out of the console race, Sony has no competition and that is bad for consumers. you will see sony raise prices, take shortcuts, lay off even more devs to cut costs which would then result in shittier games. So yeah, MS inadverntantly ended up creating an anti-consumer situtation by leaving the console business model.
Neposlop baby said they want to "dig into their roots of what made Xbox, Xbox" (paraphrased)

It sure as shit wasn't PC porting their entire portfolio, let alone on Steam. And most defiantly not on rival consoles.

Things that make you go, hmmm 🤔

Yeah outside of a few crazies this seems to be the consensus. Not enough of a dramatic win for the PS fans, hence dragging Nintendo into the conversation and saying poor Sony is being treated unfairly, as if that has anything to do with anything.

Alright but... so what? I don't really get the logic here.
No one who was playing only on PC and buying some playstation game on pc, would suddenly completely switch to ps5 AND buy everything (even multiplatform stuff) on ps5 instead of PC. This is not really an argument lol
Because it's the other way around, everyone with a PS5 could notice they can get the same games that used to be exclusive on PC and might switch and never look back, it's not just a game sale, it's the console + the sub + the games + the multiplats + addons + mtx which net them 30% of every individual sale on their store

I tried getting into ghost game but got bored after couple of hours. But on the other hand nioh series is pretty awesome.
Because it's shit. The only serviceable thing is the combat and even then, it's just okay. Otherwise, it's the usual Ubisoft open world full of busywork. The art style is prettier and the writing doesn't suck though.

Maybe it's on sale cheaper than anywhere on PC at the time? Maybe you bought a game that's got a dogshit pc port? Maybe you're just buying a game on a whim one time on the couch? Doesn't matter what the reasons are. You're not the arbiter of what millions of people do. That is 100% nonsense
I'm not the arbiter, I'm just being realistic.
I mean even without any advantages / pros, you have people who won't want to buy a game on another system than playstation just because they want trophies 😅 (even if the same thing exist as achievements on other platforms). That shows how people usually don't want to leave their main environment.

???????? Sure if you don't count MMOs and Strategy games and the bulk of survival games or MOBAs or the absolutely huge back catalog that has no console equivalent. But yeah if you only count 3rd person action adventure games then PC has no exclusives.

There's nothing realistic about believing millions of PC players are never going to buy anyhing but exclusives if they get a PS

Whatever you think about the quality of Sony's output this gen, this is a smart move.

A brand that loses it's identity is doomed to fail. Exclusive content is absolutely necessary to keep a platform afloat.
I believe this correct decision will be accompanied by another: more single player games for PS6.

If they were planning to release more gaas they might as well keep them o pc.

That I can understand.
However I'm not sure if that's a very common situation. I know plenty of people who play on consoles just because they prefer consoles, and they don't care about exclusives and if a game is on PC or not. I think this is mostly an enthusiast thing online, but most people don't go buying 10 different systems for all exclusives.
I get what you mean though, just not sure how much it happens in real life. Even less these days with how broken the PC landscape is with the crazy prices.

You'd be surprised at how many here only play those types of games. It's the equivalent to everyone on letterboxd only watching Marvel films.

This was a calculated move to kill the sales of the eventual Steam Machine while ensuring the sales of the PS6. .....if Sony actually starts funding and developing single player experiences again.

Definitely feel like there is a realignment going on here. Microsoft is seemingly exiting the console market with a high priced......something. Steam is launching a console-like PC targeting the low end. All of this while component pricing are surging and gamers will be searching for the best value they can find. Perhaps Steam is exactly the competition Sony needs to get their head on straight.

They want console users to stay on playstation ... I have been saying this whole gen that I probably would flock to PC in the next one .. this changes things, specially if the rumors about them changing course again to value SP games also becames true.

Right now everyone is saying "yeah fuck them their games this gen are shit anyway" and I agree ... but the future can be different, as always, great games will dictate everything

And BTW this pc strategy perfect aligns with wanting to release more SP exclusive games in the future... it seems like the whole point

When you start releasing revered games on an entirely new platform to new fans and then all of a sudden pull the rug, you don't think those people are gonna be upset? I said nothing of promises man
There weren't that many of them. PC has hundreds of millions and users and many of those Sony ports didn't crack a million. If the sales had been really good, Sony would have continued.

I'm certainly hoping this isn't the end to the reversals of some of Sony's strategies this gen. A good start at least.

Ummmm.... Is flushing not a thing in your neck of the woods?
Actually, I was thinking about that dumb meme about shit in the toilet vs. on the kitchen table (or however it goes).

Funny story though, growing up my dad was obsessed with "saving water" by not flushing. So I would, in fact, often get a nice surprise when lifting the lid.

Bro, you need to learn the difference between natural reactions and coping.
Well... Sony ponies reacting to this announcement with "buh...buh... nobody is this mean to NINTENDO!!" is certainly not a natural reaction.

Yes, Crackdown 3, Ryse, Quantum Break, and Redfall would have saved Xbox.

They wanted to bait Microsoft?

Wouldn't be the first time they have tried..Sony is run by snakes.
How much mental gymnastics do you have to go through to arrive at this conclusion?

You believe Sony years ago started porting some older PS games to Steam in hopes that Xbox would abandon their console ecosystem and instead make a gaming PC to allow Steam to make all their profits?

And when they fall for the trap, they'll pull support? Those crazy snakes!

I mean, half their games sold like shit, so it doesn't look like the PC crowd cared all that much.

Returnal, Rift Apart, Sackboy, Spider-Man 2, Ragnarok, and Forbidden West did underwhelming numbers. Seems they really didn't want them all that much. Else they would have bought them.

Their strategy had many problems.

- Games released years later at full price. They lost all the hype marketing of a new release. Releases sometimes happened through announcements on the blog.
- Besides being released years later, you weren't sure if a particular game would have a PC version or not. That killed any idea of pre-orders and hype.
- Many titles experienced performance issues, which generated memes and outraged users. PC gamers are much more critical because they have a review and refund system.
- Requiring a PSN login excludes a huge number of markets.
- They didn't port titles that could have been more successful, such as GT7 and Demon's Souls.
- Some ports were pointless: Uncharted 4, which is the final game in a series. They should have ported the previous trilogy. Ratchet and Clank was similar, although the games are more independent of each other.
- Focus on titles that nobody was interested in, like Sackboy.
- Some games that were sequels (God of War Ragnarok, Spider-Man 2, Horizon Zero Dawn) also sold less on PS5 than their predecessors. It was expected that the same would happen on PC.

Great move. If they can fire Herman and stop making woke, corporate slop, I'm back in. Maybe cater to their actual audience again, like they used to.

  • They have struggled to diversify their business into the live service market
  • They have failed at targeting the PC userbase
  • The entire PlayStation business is now reliant on adult males who are +30 years old above, who have less time to play due to their careers
  • Kids are not buying consoles - they are on Roblox/Fortnite

Video games industry is in deep trouble

Your forgot:

- Reached record new MAU
- Most profitable generation ever for PS.

Yups, this gen ps5/pr0 was really bad deal if u went full digital, if u still stuck with physical aka got 500usd base model with discdrive or managed to get blu-drive for ur pr0 relatively cheaply(aka not for 200usd+ like it was sold for here even many months after pr0 launch) then it fine too.

Compared to sony u spend bit more on hardware but no psplus sub and overall game prices digital vs digital are way lower on pc(simply coz storefront competition and better discounts), and there is always option either to stick around ps5/pr0 power or get 2-3x that power and play those new demanding games at ps6 graphic fidelity/image quality/settings from 2022 onwards(4090 launch).

That's exactly it, but I'd argue they were hoist by their own petard charging full price for years old PS4 games.

People get over piles too, it still blows.

PC has about a million X the exclusives consoles do lmao. Many of them are garbage indie slop but that's just an absolutely ridiculous statement.

Nah I don't believe they'd be alive and well. They stopped making good games, that is the be all and end all of a consoles demise.
No one is spending $2k building a pc for indie slop lol

Yup. Aside from the small number of first party games, there lots of multiplat games and even more PC exclusive games. Steam and GOG users destroy console base and that's even despite consoles being cheap and easy to use. And games are cheaper and no online fees.PC games also offer KB/m and gamepad options while console is almost always gamepad only. So even if there's a multiplat game, why would anyone play an rts or strategy kind of game or any clicky game like balatro on a console gamepad when PC offers both control options where KB/m will likely be better.

Pretty much every genre has more games on PC. And as you said back catalog of games going all the way back to dos box oldies. A console gamer has to resort to hoping a game is BC, rebuys it as a new digital version or has to dust off their old console to play it.

Unfortunate. I should pick up the rest of the old PC ports i need next time they are discounted. Just in case they do something extreme, like pull their old games from Steam.

Nah, they started with their PC port strategy long after Xone had already declined, roughly by the end of 2016. The reason they did so was because they were already on their way to try and become the "netflix of gaming" which required them to be on as much screens as possible.

The reality is simply they fumbled the release of the Xone really badly. PC ports came as a consequence of their shifting market strategies as they tried to survive.

I bought Days Gone, Spider-Man, Uncharted and Dad of War
I regret Dad of War
I would never touch woke slop like Spider-Man 2 and TLOU2

I don't buy consoles not named Nintendo, and they only get a pass because it's both portable and nobody makes bangers at Nintendo's level.

If Sony doesn't want my money I'm okay with that, especially since half their PC output had been woke slop. Their loss, not mine
