Mechanically it looks good, but with multiplayer games you need to go for concepts with broad appeal.

Don't think many people will play this, which is not good for a multiplayer title.

I guess this looks like something....Probably again be gone like fart in the wind like Keeper. I don't understand what Microsoft is doing.

At least we got Hellblade 3 coming...another fart.

Likely different levels of multiplayer. It's not meant to be a live service game. Could be like 2-4 player local co-op plus ability to play online vs others. Kinda like the fighting games that are playable online can still be played locally after the multiplayer population dwindles. Could be fun for few rounds with family or kids like part of the rotation for game nights.

I wonder if Double Fine or Media Molecule get shut down first.
Someone should put it up on one of those betting sites.

The thing with a game like Keeper is that at least they can make some money from it over time as it goes on sales, bundles, etc. It's a single player game so it will always be playable.
This game though, after 3 weeks when it no longer has an active community it will literally be worthless.

So they were asked to make a multiplayer game to stay alive? It may actually shut them down quicker, because you need other people to play mp titles.

They should have shown something else here instead of this game.

A game like this would have greatly benefitted from being announced and shadow dropped immediately while it's fresh.

Y'all are a bunch of people with no joy in your life. This game looks like good, dumb fun.

Can't wait to have a few friends over with some beers and play this for a weekend, make some dumb dick-pots, and then probably never touch it again. But it'll no doubt be a blast.

I can't wait to see people flood X with pictures of their cock and ass pottery

at least DF is releasing games unlike Media Molecule

Yeah, but I just don't understand Microsoft strategy here. Their games are not doing well, but outside of a few. I'm all for letting a studio do what they want, but at some point you got to do some actual managing of studios. Nobody cared about Avowed or Outer Worlds 2 and they have Fallout doing nothing instead. They have double fine make this and we can all tell this won't do well either. At some point you have to look at the ips you have and start doing something with the ones that will be successful.

I've got plenty of joy personally, video games is my main hobby/joy. That being said, sometimes a game isn't meant for me. I will always appreciate Double Fine for their creativity and willingness to try something new, and I'll try the game at launch. However, it doesn't feel like it's a game meant for me.

It needs to be another narrative driven, over-the-shoulder, third-person action game or else it's not worth it.

Not for me. Looks like a game that is fun for an hour before boredom creeps in.

I have a feeling this is going to be a flop.

I think it will be Double Fine but will be a situation like Tango Game Works where someone else like Devolver picks them up.

Between this and Keeper, Double Fine looks completely out to lunch. They have lost all interest in making games people actually want to buy.

Double Fine isn't going anywhere, they are cheap, and provide permanent weird family content for Gamepass. They have at least one more game to reveal after this.

Double Fine will have released 4 games within 5 years, Psychonauts 2, Keeper, Kiln, and 1 more. what has Media Molecule released?

Its certainly unique but I don't think its for me. I tried Keeper last year and fell off of it really quickly so current Double Fine's games haven't really resonated with me yet

Keeper looked awesome in trailers but then was kinda boring, unfortunately. This game will just be about pots that look like penises fighting each other. I guess it could go viral.

We already had that game though (sans the pots).

I kinda like the creativity on display here. My biggest problem with it is that it's multiplayer and I don't want to play with other people all the time.

Tango Gameworks was also productive and inexpensive and they got the boot and it is easily arguable that their games had a much wider appeal than the typical Double Fine affair. Microsoft also has a keener eye on their bottom line so I wouldn't be so bold as to say "isn't going anywhere". It wouldn't shock me to see either studio be shut down, but it also seems like MM is a prestige studio for Sony since their last impactful game was Little Big Planet and that released on the PS3 so it isn't like Sony's had ample time to drop the axe.

I'd argue Dreams could have been great. Just that it needed a) PC support, if not immediately then sooner than later, and b) PSVR 2 support. But who knows what they're on about when it comes to b). There has still been no update to WipEout Omega Collection, which seems like such an obvious fit (and already had PSVR original support). Maybe MM just has some juicy footage of Sony execs, who knows.

Saw a comment that said this game looked like the effects of "Toxic Positivity" in a dev environment, and that kinda resonates with me.

I've liked some of Double Fine's other games like Psychonauts or Brutal Legend, and even some of their smaller stuff like Iron Brigade...but this just looks like friend-slop content to me.

Watching this just makes me want another Power Stone, which did the brawler against friends thing better. Peak or RV There Yet I think also do the goofy things with friends tone better as well.

It's tricky, right? MM makes some amazing creativity tools, but I'm not sure there is much of a market for them. The more complex the tool, the lesser likelihood that your average console user is going to invest time in them. Think Mario Maker versus LBP/Dreams. And if you release something like Dreams on PC, there is a ton of competition for creativity tools and using other tools would most likely be easier to monetize.

If you look at DF's library of games on Wiki, most are forgettable. And I bet many of the games nobody has even heard of before. But the studio needs a deep pockets corporation to keep their ideas afloat.

On June 9, 2019, during Microsoft's press conference at E3 2019, it was announced that Double Fine had been acquired by the company and was becoming part of Xbox Game Studios.[11] According to Schafer, through the acquisition, Double Fine would be able to retain its independent nature but would not have to struggle with finding publishers for its games, a problem it has had in its past.[12] Schafer spoke to Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass, a games subscription service for Microsoft Windows and Xbox users, as one favorable aspect of the acquisition. Schafer felt many of Double Fine's games, particularly Psychonauts and its sequel, do not have an aesthetic that people would necessarily pay the full price for, but the subscription approach of Game Pass lowers that barrier and would potentially get more people to try the game. Thus, Schafer felt that being acquired by Microsoft would allow the studio to continue to develop experimental games and allow these projects greater exposure.[13] A month ahead of the release of Psychonauts 2, in July 2021, Schafer stated he was happy with Microsoft's handling of Double Fine; he called the acquisition a "limited integration" with Double Fine retaining all control on the creative elements while leaving the financial issues up to Microsoft to manage, and left the studio able to focus their creative skills on finishing the game without feeling any budgetary crunch.[14] Double Fine and 2 Player Productions released PsychOdyssey, a 22 hour documentary on the making of Psychonauts 2 in February 2023.[15]

I think what happened with MS is they were so focused on big budget games way back, they then went on a spree diversifying with smaller studios to make their game library more varied. So get some studios to make $20-40 lower budget games to fill that void.

Problem is you can get good indie/ow budget kinds of games from any third party studio who releases their games on all platforms anyway. And I dont see how Psychonauts would ever move the needle. I dont think even the original game sold well.

What MS should had done is just focus on big budget games and get the studios to release them on time. But another problem, many stunk it up and could barely even release a game trailer in 5+ years.

I think "monetize" is the keyword here. Sure, there are creativity tools available for free. You can make your own pedobear cave in Roblox if you're so inclined. But maybe a paid entry fee could have sorted out the trash. Ehh, who knows. That ship has already sailed. I still do want my WipEout in PSVR 2 though, goddammit Sony.
