Bungie: "We’re opening Marathon playtest signups for an NDA’d Closed Technical Test from October 22 - 27"

Best part about these leaked videos are the loading screens. Everything else looks like shit.

Welp.....

Caught the reup further down. Contrary to most on here I like the style they are going for. Lots of atmosphere. Couple of the character designs irk me but I can live with it. Similarly the npc's are kinda boring but we haven't seen the second faction yet.
I'm with you basically 100% on all that.

I watched the videos Judge Magister Judge Magister posted again, and I don't think there's too much to take away.

- It was the guy's first mission, so he had the starter loadout.
- He wandered around the map, didn't follow mission.
- He was bad.
- The maps he played on were the maps from April/June. No Outpost gameplay.
- The map threat levels were both "Low" which I assume means very sparse AI enemies.

Still just as interested to see what Bungie shows off at the rereveal in Nov/Dec.

Will play tonight….or not I was chosen but I'm not sure I want to
You play. You play and then you come back here and tell us of your experience but redact key names and dates.

Maybe it ends up being ok.
I just don't care about MP games in general nowadays so i won't be playing it.

Not a huge fan of the way Helldivers did the warbonds. I mean I like that you can complete them at any time but they did way too many. Couldn't keep up unless you play the game exclusively.

What? It's the single best model for these things yet. You can't keep up, wat?? I only periodically jump back in myself these days, and have fallen behind with the warbonds... but it's great to have my pick of them should I eventually collect the earnable credits required.

Such a bizarre take.

I think it's more the fact that they do them too often. And they have weapons and other goodies attached to them rather than cosmetics only. If you want to own every weapon then good luck earning your currency to purchase ALL of the warbonds without devoting your life to the cause. I'd prefer to have a typical battle pass like THE FINALS for example which is cosmetic only.

Bungie may have some chances.... If arc raider is not on console but oh well

After watching the few streams I'm even more excited for this to release now.
Personally I think it has real potential but that's up to Bungie now.
But I really wish that Bungie had stuck to custom types rather than heroes, I much rather build and grind my own character than what they have now.
I will always think of that initial trailer every time I think of this game and what could have been, it's a shame and maybe dumping Barrett and hiring Ziegler was the big change that brought that on.

The cosmetic skins looks so fucking garbage, i cant imagine anyone would pay for this on the bp

While the world has some nice art design, the character and weapon design is atrocious

It's a rare thing to hear of a gamer who complains that new content is added too quickly and that there too much of it. Jesus christ there's no pleasing 'em 🤦‍♂️

I don't understand why you feel you must own IT ALL either (and that if you don't you feel physically dejected). I don't suffer from that condition myself, I will never understand it.

I wouldn't mind, but most of the items in a warbond are pointless cosmetic fluff anyway, I don't even want them. I have about four warbonds worth of items, and I ignore the vast majority of what was included. But at least with their good frequency, there's always a chance I'll actually get something I want to actually equip.

And more pertinently, I understand that the DLC delivery model Arrowhead have landed on is what enables them to keep supporting and adding to the game hopefully for years. Weapons in a warbond are a necessary evil these days - all available for free if only the player dips in here and there (like myself).

Warning: the first eight minutes of that video are painful to get through.

To anyone who missed it, it essentially looks the same as the previous build but with slightly better fidelity and what looks like a more generous application of PBR materials across all assets. But it's nothing particularly striking, the game's engine tech still looks quite crude and basic (others might call it style). There was also a new desert environment shown.

Maybe it was due to the person playing, but they made the gameplay looks incredibly dull and boring.
Well I was invited for the test and this morning I couldn't play because it couldn't find other players tot connect... This is a DOA game

trio is faster, solo takes ages to find and i dont want to play with others... People just too dumb to see the crew fill button i guess

Concurrent players are lower than in the previous beta, with only 4k players.
Compared to something like Arch Raiders, this is really low.
Did Bungie send very few codes, or are people just not keen on playing this game....

It seems they sent a lot more codes than before as many of my friends who didn't get into the alpha have gotten into this

Explains why I couldn't connect this morning.
Only 7 days to ARC Raiders and that game will be the final nail in the Marathon Coffin

Could it have been that most people also didn't ask for a code?
That people are so uninterested, that they didn't bother to try the game.

Huch i got in. That never happened to me before. Probably not too many people signed up for it in the first place.

On the positive side, after watching the videos, it seems very adaptable to multiplatforms, it could easily even run on Switch 2, so playerbase might hold longer than expected.

The movement after playing so much BF is so clunky just an fyi

Nowadays BF is my beloved, but as an aside I will always have a special place in my heart for Bungie's movement and shooting mechanics, and so if anything is even slightly keeping me from disregarding this game altogether, it's the Bungie feelz.

I should imagine it does feel quite clunky next to the slick actions of a modern BF game, but I personally prefer to refer to the distinct differences of a Bungie shooter as weighty, methodical and purposeful. Outside of the largely uninteresting BR genre (with the massive player health pools), a Bungie fps is the only multiplayer shooter that accommodates duelling, purely because of their unique mechanics.

It's that, that fundamental Bungie fps magic, which gives this game any hope, at least for me. Because absolutely everything else about Marathon looks unbelievably shit.

I tried another runner and her movement was better. There is solo, but the AI is definitely tuned for 3 man groups so when you attacked by 3 you are pretty much dead

Possibly

Played some with friends last night that applied for the first one and didn't get in and one of them who did get a code says he didn't even apply this time but got the invite email, maybe giving out codes from the first requests?

The general consensus is the same (from my group anyhow)

Bungie send way more codes this time as far as I know.
I don't think Sony would ever recover if this game flop as Concord. But looks like is in the same route.

Kinda interesting. Not exactly solo new player friendly. Very odd product for a mainstream game.

Will give it a chance and play more later.

I've only played a few matches, but I think people writing this game off are wrong.

It looks fantastic and it plays well. It could definitely need a bit more introduction to certain things (like contracts).
But the aesthetic and vibe feels incredibly interesting to me.

I'm a believer.

The graphics look a lot better now!
I think it looks alright. It has a nice atmosphere, soundtrack adds a lot.

The initial presentation is top notch.

No way this will be mass market like they hope is my first limited impression after an hour. Regular casual guy won't have a fucking clue whats going on but i get not everything is in place yet. Need to play some more after dinner.

Cautiously optimistic and intrigued.

Think the way the contracts work is off. Needs to matchmake by what contract you have if it doesn't try already. I spawned in and everyone fucked off in different directions.

Please DM me your impressions of anyone that got in.
I promise not to share your impressions anywhere, I'm just really excited about Marathon and missed the chance to sign up for this.

Ill be sharing in here im sure the police won't come knocking.

It seemed like one of their big incentives to keep teams together is the 10 second extraction vs the 30 second extraction. In all my time of watching gameplay though, the 30 second extraction didn't seem punishing / risky enough.

Unrelated...it sounds like this test is a lot like the Server Slam in that it's focusing on the beginning aspect of the game. I wonder what percentage of complaints are from people not really grasping that the first few hours are supposed be vanilla.

CCU of closed alphas/betas don't mean a shit because the company is who decides how many people they throw there. They aren't open to everybody. Having less CCU it just means Bungie decided to include in this test less people.

More than half a million people applied for the first one, even if it was limited to NA. If Bungie would have decided to put everybody who applied in the test they'd have had more CCU than Arc Raiders.

This game will give Concord a run for its money.
Concord all over again.
Another waste. Question is, will they pull the game shortly after release like Concord.

Should have cut their losses during development a couple of years ago when it was obvious there was zero hype.

That money could have gone into remastering/remaking ICO, or a new Dark Cloud.

Wankers.
In your dreams. Marathon will be a successful game. Not a supermainstream thing like Marathon because it's a way more hardcore niche concept, but will be successful.

Bungie send way more codes this time as far as I know.
No, Bungie never said if they sent more or less codes than in previous tests. They only said that will add more players to the test later in the road, that the test won't be limited to the ones who received the code at the start.

Who is willing to go through that?
The people who likes this kind of games.

CCU peaks are not crazy important imo, though I'm sure these companies would spit their drinks out reading that. The (slight) worry I have about the Marathon CCU was its trend. The hook is vital. That said, the open beta is the true test.

The companies don't give a fuck about CCUs.

And well, obviously if they opened a Marathon closed beta to let's say 5000 players they won't expect the same CCUs than and Arc Raider beta opened to let's say 100000 players.

In fact, companies don't look at CCUs. They look instead at metrics related to ARPU, DAU, MAU, retention, which are the ones important for GaaS. Only the server engineer looks at CCUs to know if they need to add or remove servers, rebalance players among them, etc.

Regarding betas yes, these closed alphas and betas are more to test, verify and fix multiple things while other stuff still is under development. Some time later, once they do an open beta that everybody can freely join without needed to be greenlighted by Bungie or without having preordered the game or something like that, it's where we'll really see the interest of the people in the game. And where also the player feedback will be more representative because it will be from having played a game pretty likely almost ready to release.

I assume with a more complete game the feedback will be way better. But being a GaaS pretty likely the game they'll release will be pretty much a minimum viable product, with a lot of important stuff planned to be added after launch.

Bungie never said a thing. He is way more secret than before.

I saying the way people is getting the code. I don't give a damn what Bungie say.
