Bungie: "We’re opening Marathon playtest signups for an NDA’d Closed Technical Test from October 22 - 27"

Morgan Freeman Good Luck GIF

Yeah, because the open NDA invitation of Battlefield 6 worked like wonders. Everyone saw the game on the first day of testing.

Here it will be worse: people will sign up, get the key, realize the game is trash and Bungie is over, leak everything. What are they going to do? Not invite them to the next flop?

Marathon has already had a number of NDA playtests that haven't leaked. Not sure what the difference between the Marathon and BF6 NDAs were. Possibly size?

Another waste. Question is, will they pull the game shortly after release like Concord.

Should have cut their losses during development a couple of years ago when it was obvious there was zero hype.

That money could have gone into remastering/remaking ICO, or a new Dark Cloud.

Wankers.

Isn't this a flagship Sony title? It's one of their biggest studios, no? They already had to very publicly bury Concord, another big one?

Warning: the first eight minutes of that video are painful to get through.

To anyone who missed it, it essentially looks the same as the previous build but with slightly better fidelity and what looks like a more generous application of PBR materials across all assets. But it's nothing particularly striking, the game's engine tech still looks quite crude and basic (others might call it style). There was also a new desert environment shown.

Maybe it was due to the person playing, but they made the gameplay looks incredibly dull and boring.

They really don't want people mocking this.

I had just decided to leave this game be.

Maybe I'll comment a bit more on it now.

Like that geometry in the video above looks just like an outside area I recognize from Destiny 2, reskinned in Pepto Bismol. I mean JUST like it. Crazy huh?

The only thing that really stood out to me was the character stats screen. Build crafting is likely something Bungie is hanging their hat on here.

Just remember, they're expecting people to pay up front for this. The ramifications of that should make you cautious: player population is everything, if you expect a good experience (and your monies worth).

Please tell me they upgraded the visuals and tech significantly since the playtests, this title relies on its art style immensely to differentiate itself, and the high-quality art in the reveal trailer deserves to be translated effectively to ingame visuals. The last playtest had visuals that came across as cheap, low budget, low detail, muddy and akin to an aa studio release with a tiny budget like no mans sky at release than a juggernaut highly polished top tier Sony/Bungie release. Hopefully they polished the gameplay systems and added voice chat etc.

This thing was supposed to carry Sony's multiplayer momentum this gen, so Im giving them the benefit of the doubt but have little confidence. They'd better pull off a Wolverine like upgrade because this game will get mogged on to hell and back if they release the same quality as before with just more content.

Caught the reup further down. Contrary to most on here I like the style they are going for. Lots of atmosphere. Couple of the character designs irk me but I can live with it. Similarly the npc's are kinda boring but we haven't seen the second faction yet.

Looks much more polished than the alpha test. If i could get I'd be able to form a proper impression ffs. Signed up through Steam the other week also and still nothing. You'd think a few thousand hours in Destiny would count for something..........

Marathon appears to be following the Helldivers 2 and ARC Raiders Battle Pass system. I'm surprised this style is catching on.
Not a huge fan of the way Helldivers did the warbonds. I mean I like that you can complete them at any time but they did way too many. Couldn't keep up unless you play the game exclusively.

If the game doesn't change people's minds by the time it releases, and expectations are still low, I believe the game won't be a Concord-level flop, but I imagine it will have a very short lifespan like The Suicide Squad game, and similar games.

We need to see better quality videos from that test but definitely visuals looks better, that said it's still not enough to be current gen title

The original Marathon legend ended with a Pheidippides running straight to his grave. It appears this is following in his footsteps.

Shooters were key to the ps3, now it's about super hero's and tech demos like Astro robot, and gimmicks like ps portal making people happy.
