Skate Early Access | OT | Fortnite Style for Fortnite Prices

plandemic
No Way What GIF by Originals

Skate 1 came out in 2007. Skate 3 came out in 2010. So we got 3 complete, full, highly regarded, well loved games in less time than it took for EA to release this abomination.
I mean... I'm not trying to defend this studio (don't even know their name) but let's not ignore the fact that Black Box was an established and experienced developer long before they started working on Skate. This studio is clearly brand new, and it shows...
There is clearly something majorly wrong with the way videogames are made these days.
Tell me something I don't know. We usually attribute these modern dev times to an obsession with visual fidelity but... there is none to speak of in this game. It's the ugliest Frostbite game I've ever seen, to the point where I was in disbelief when I learned it was the Frostbite engine.

Anyway, I just completed Day 2's dailies and eh... I enjoy the actual skating gameplay quite a lot (especially that feeling when you Ace a challenge) but the progression system isn't really doing it for me. I doubt I'll be playing this religiously (especially considering the games coming out soon) but I can see myself hopping on every now and then, especially when they release new modes and features.

Honestly? It's better than i've thought but that doesn't say much since my expectation were pretty low from the beginning.
But besides the abysmal graphicstyle i like it more than Skate 3 i would say (for now)

I tried playing again today and it felt worse than yesterday. The game is soulless. I'll probably try again tomorrow or over the weekend, but I can't see myself wanting to play this much longer.

I've come across a few events where you had to do an insane challenge that was actually really satisfying to pull off (there was one where you had to do a christ air through a skylight while dropping like 50 feet).

95 percent of the challenges, though, are just super repetitive and boring. If they could come up with more of the cool stuff and less of the "collect all the bearings!" this has potential.

I can't understand why they don't have deals with more actual skate brands. Huge ball drop there. No, I don't want to spend my in-game currency on a loot box for the chance to get a.... plain teal deck.

i am looking forward to skate story but this seems kinda petty.

Don't know brother, skate. deserves all the shit it's getting for all the obvious reasons.

Don't get me wrong, I get what you're saying but...

PS: can't wait for skate story, hope it turns out to be good

I'll check this out once it actually releases in 1.0, but the early access alphas that I've played just weren't it. Total shit imo.

I am something of a hater myself but it just seems in poor taste to promote your game by shitting on a game that isn't being received well

I would say it's ok after trying it for over 2 hours but the graphics, man. The graphics. Never seen so much ugliness in one spot.
I don't play Fortnite so i don't know if it looks similar to that, but i can imagine being possible.
But skating feels fun and that's what matters most to me, we will see how bad the mtx really are after some playing but i really hope they will listen to the community rather yes than not.

i hate the graphics but can't stop playing

Gameplay is very good

If they can keep mtx down to only cosmetic shit and add decent variety of maps I can see myself playing this a bit

I'm guessing they'll charge for seasons with different maps or something?

Where are you seeing this. It does take a while to load sometimes, but I don't see any information about a queue…maybe it's hidden on my platform?

Although this wouldn't surprise me, it's very fun, skate is a huge game, and it's free
Steam. 91000 current players. Now it says 78000 in queue lol. I'm out.

Eh, I can't blame the community manager for trying to ride the hype wave since there are a lot of skate clips that are currently going viral.

Also they claim to have hit 2 million players in one day:

We finally get to play RHCP Californication

Also the gameplay is amazing

Most else is shit. Graphics is lame and vibe is horrible - they say the same cringe shit they did in riders republic

Lots of it makes no sense "people around here like to raw dog this hood!"

"Use your skater eye to get a good footy!"

It's so bad it would honestly just do better without any sort of narration

But the game is fun as fuck and the gameplay is very good - this is definitely the best skateboarding I've ever played in a game

Agree, game is really fun. I usually pop in my own songs and play the game.

Disregard what I said

Me being stuck on the loading screen was a bug

I do see the queue waitlist now, 60k in line. First time I'm seeing this screen as I didn't see it during the week.

I think it's safe to say the game is very popular

The queue is at least moving pretty quick

Edit: took about 5 minutes to join when I was 60k in line

Hmmm... it does feel pretty good on the controller. But everything else is sooo fuckin cringe. if only you could actually skip through the narration / tutorials....

this definitely does feel pretty good to play, and i havent even messed around with the alternative control options (like release to jump mapped to a paddle).

Most important setting in the fucking game: turn off that chicks commentary when you skate

huge

I think I'm totally addicted. I played this game pretty much all day yesterday and first thing when I woke up

I'm currently in line at 114k on xsx

Glad to see it doing well

Do we know how many players need to be online in order to get sent to the waitlist?
118k currently on PC. The game is doing better than i've thought.
I just hope the devs will listen to the community and not focus too much on mtx.
Edit: in line at 124k waiting time 13 min.

I actually got invited to the play test in July, but never bothered due to the negative word of mouth

Glad I decided to give it a try during early access because the game is very good

Did I miss out on any exclusive stuff for not participating in the play test?

I asked Chatgtp to analyse this shot

Too clean / plastic look → Buildings, ramps, and props lack the grime, wear, and grit that define real skate spots.

Props feel placed, not lived-in → The ramp, pallets, and trashcan look like level editor objects dropped in, not integrated into the environment.

Lighting too flat → Sunlight doesn't create the harsh shadows/skater silhouettes people expect from urban skate photography.

Floating / misaligned props → Hurts immersion, and makes players question hitbox accuracy and trick consistency.

NPCs look lifeless → The person standing at the yellow storefront looks stiff and out of place, reinforcing "mannequin NPC" complaints.

Animation staging → Both skaters are in dramatic, picture-perfect poses, which risks looking scripted rather than dynamic.

This shit is funny

It's pretty dead on when it comes to a lot of the issues hah

For me gameplay is King and the controls just feel amazing.

I come from playing the Tony Hawk games. I never really played any of the skate games much. Once I got the hang of the controls, I can see why people love this series so much. Tony hawk is good but feels vastly inferior now that I am in the groove of this game

FWIW I've skated my whole life and while the vibe is awful, writing is terrible, etc I do appreciate the depth of the controls and the shit you can pull off

Big companies struggle so hard to get the atmosphere of extreme sport games right

Riders republic had the same issue. The writing voice acting was so cringe. This is probably worse though because of how much talking there is during the missions.

You should play the originals, better then whatever this is.
Me personally never could get into the control system.
But maybe I never gave it enough time ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The shared giant open world is feeding my riders republic itch, that game has been sort of dead for a while

I'll likely go back and play the other skate games given how much I love this one, but right now I'm having a blast and it's free

181k in line lol

16 min eta

I don't mind these waits though I just browse the Internet or watch TV

Once on, I haven't really been disconnected besides when I go afk, which is nice

After playing over the last couple of days, here are my thoughts on it:

The good:

- Gameplay is as good as before, assuming you like Skate gameplay. I played during a close beta and it felt more stiff, but right now it feels fine.

- The climbing mechanics are actually fun. The map has a lot of verticality, and this allows for more creative spots etc. It's very unrealistic, but it's fun.

- I had some fun moments with other random players, like with the fact that you can add objects to the map. Each players kept adding more stuff to create a fun line.

The bad:

- Art style is terrible. It's bland, it's generic, the city feels dead, everything feels soulless.

- Character customization is very limited, and the characters look terrible, it's impossible to make a good looking one.

- Shop, microtransactions, everything related to the free to play model.

- While being able to place objects is fun like I mentionned above, in each situation where I did that, there was always one player who kept moving our objects our putting random things in the way to annoy us... So... yeah...

- While being multiplayer, the multiplayer is super limited. There's no multiplayer modes besides free roaming, there's no text chat or vocal chat, no way to communicate, it most of the time just feels like playing alone with npc skaters around. The multiplayer was actually more fun in the older games. It REALLY needs a chat system.

Another big complaint I have in the negatives, which is actually probably the reason of why there's absolutely no competitive multiplayer modes, is the accessibility / gameplay options.
You can change way too much. You can change the amount of grind assist, the height of fall damage etc etc, leading to people playing with completely different gameplays.
This is bad in a multiplayer game, everyone is playing with their own tweaked gameplay, leading to something completely unbalanced if you wanted any PVP / competitive mode. Unless if they made it that in such modes, everyone would be playing with the default locked settings, but it doesn't seem to be the way they want to go forward with this game.

That may be just a honey moon phase, depending on what you're after.
Skate gives better sensations when doing more basic stuff. You can feel more physics, more momentum, it's fun and can make a jump between two roofs more fun that it would be in Tony Hawk.

However, once you're used to it and want something with more challenge / depth, you might start missing Tony Hawk gameplay with its focus on high combos etc...
(I like both series for different reasons)

Game topped out at 134k CCU on Steam on its first weekend. Impressive start.

Nothing big, really. Just a skate insider board pattern, some board stickers, and a title.

I picked up THPS1+2 a year or two ago out of nostalgia's sake and I could not get into it again. Skate's control scheme has always been vastly superior to me, so it's impossible for me to go back. Going back to THPS genuinely feels like a regression lol

I imagine Tony Hawk gameplay / concept maybe never truly was your thing to begin with, and you played it because it was the only option but you never "loved" it, and Skate is more your thing.
As far as I'm concerned, I can switch between both, I prefer Tony Hawk because I'm really into scoring, but both franchises have different qualities.

In Skate, you will get more thrills from doing simple basic things, and you can have a better sense of speed during downhills etc... It's also cool for relaxing and free skating.
Tony Hawk has a lot more depth though, with an amazing combo system and tons of tricks, as well as an amazing gameplay and feeling, as long as you're into the arcade stuff.

Also little tip if anyone find the game too easy, in the "assist" gameplay options, you can turn off the assistance for tricks landing.
It will make that you have to let go of your trick before landing. If you're doing a kickflip and just keep holding it, it will keep spinning and you will bail, while with the assist you can never bail like this, it automatically stops and land perfectly.
I don't think it was a good choice to have this on by default.

This is another thing that would make any competitive mode less viable, if they ever decide to add one in the future.

They're adding a leaderboard and more multiplayer options, so I'm guessing it does get competitive to some extent

Doesn't assist modes generally impact your ability to string higher combinations, and do more complex things? I noticed grind assist for examples severely limits what you can pull off.

Those "Each Season Includes" looks really promising on the road map. New Skateable Areas and new challenges.

I played half an hour today. The last skate game I played was Skate 1.

It's a functional game, all the gameplay stuff works well. The art style is not so bad when you're in the game, and at least it runs at 4k 60.

I do miss the camera being by the skateboard on the ground, like it was in Skate 1.

Press in the joystick and it will move up close to your board

You can change that in the settings. In the camera options there is a setting for low and high camera, it's on high by default.

To be honest I don't understand why this became the default and why most people seem to prefer it that way. The low, close to the board camera is more iconic for the Skate franchise.
It gives more sensation and a better sense of speed.

The far away camera does give you more visibility, but I find it much less enjoyable for this gameplay.
