Phil Spencer: announcement this week

I think this will be a non-event. Microsoft bringing Hi fi rush and sea of thieves to other consoles and a few select titles in the future and that’s it. They’re not leaving the console business and next day it’s business as usual.

However

I’m surprised the Xbox PR team has been radio silent. This is a PR disaster. The Xbox brand is being destroyed every day more and more. And not a peep except that vague tweet from Phil.

But the first part doesn't make sense in light of the second part.

It would be very simple for Phil to put out a tweet that extinguishes the fire. He could say (in better PR speak than this), "We are bringing Hi Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves to other consoles. We are considering a couple other titles for the future, but there are no plans to send our major exclusives to other platforms. We will have more details next week." He could squash all this craziness with a simple tweet like that -- if that were true. The fact that he did not say that tells you that it is not true. It's bigger than that.

p.s. It also seems to me that Phil and the Xbox PR team are not in the driver's seat, when it comes to these decisions. Big spending and low profits have understandably drawn the attention of Daddy Warbucks, who is calling for some changes in strategy.

Probably, but keep in mind anything they say can impact markets, so they have to have all the ducks lined up and vetted by legal if its a significant announcement that plays in to stock value. So whilst I'm sure something is happening, and have made my predictions, don't read too much into the current lack of detail. Better to look at the leaks with a critical eye. Primary source for me is actually Moores Law comments around industry chatter from within AMD/Apple etc that Xbox internally are dealing with a crisis, or rather the actual quote on the podcast was 'red alert'. I tend to trust people with links to engineering over influencers who make a living out of a platform. So its something major for that reason, not so much around the Phil tweet.

We need a poll:

How will MS announce their news?
  • Blogpost
  • Tweet(s)
  • Pre Recorded Video
  • Livestream
  • Corporate Letter
What else?

Besides “influencers”, does anyone else get affected by this? It’s not like the entire platform shuts down next week. Most likely a 3P focused rebrand under the “Microsoft Gaming” banner with Xbox becoming the Surface-esque line of the same? This is Microsoft after all, anything else would be too ambitious 😄

I posted this in a previous thread and I still think there going down that hardware route (handheld and new console)

If they don’t enable a duel boot into full windows (Which I think would be the best option).I think there might be an option to boot into a custom version of it that would allow access to PC Gamepass but also steam.

That way they satisfy everyone, you have your base xbox optimised games profile for people who just want a console experience with the os and there library, want to access Xbox console game pass and play their library.

But you can also (dependant on how flexible the os is for it) use your Xbox to access pc gamepass, but also steam client, People would be access there steam games, where Microsoft sells games, (yes valve would get a cut but we’re talking about people buying an Xbox for this feature) and de facto PlayStation exclusives when they release on steam.

This may actually be beneficial to Sony if Microsoft are able to bridge the divide between pc people wanting a console form factor pc, and Xbox console players themselves.

Microsoft need hardware, At a decent price to match the ps6 in power (home console) the benefit of it would be the understanding that you’d buy an Xbox/PC Gamepass box/Steambox.
If there’s a 12 month or so delay between an Xbox release and then a PlayStation release. We’ll that’s about the same time that Sony takes to port from PlayStation to pc neither side is really loosing out on exclusives apart from Sony who would not be getting their 70% they would get from selling to the Xbox console users.

Or they could just open it up as a full windows experience where it’s effectively a pc which you could just use and install emulators and mods etc.

Whereas Microsoft have got money from people buying there games on Xbox/PC/PS5/next Nintendo
Or subscribed to game pass, buying games on Xbox (Console), or steam.

Handheld I see as a Xbox version of the steam deck not sure about the power though. Maybe a little less than the rog alloy is it?

They probably won’t include the port for external GPUs though.

The problem with people like you is that you can never see the forest from the trees. You need to ask yourself how we even got here.

This is not like Sony releasing games on PC 12-18 months after they had been exclusive to the PS on a game-by-game basis.

Keep this in mind, at some point, MS had a release cadence identical to Sony. Make your game, then release that game on the Xbox. And then after Sony started doing the PS+ free games stuff, MS started theirs too. But then something happened. MS started releasing their games on the PC, and then gamepass, and then gamepass PC and now, everything they make comes to both console and PC day and date. This happened over a 5-6 year period. We didn't just wake up one day and this is where we were at.

And now, they are gonna start releasing their games on the Playstation on a case-by-case basis? That's like Ferrari opening a store but then selling lambos because that's the only way they can get people to come into their store. You dont see it? Where do you think we will be in say another 3-5 years? And mind you, just last year... and the year before that, MS came and emphatically talked about how Xbox games exclusives will remain exclusive. And you can sit there... and still somehow find a way to convince yourself... that this would just be HFR and SoT, a few odds and ends here and there... and thats it? Really?

If I had told you in 2021, right after MS just acquired Bethesda, that this was going to happen? If I told you then that gamepass would ruin Xbox, and that Xbox would have to release their games on a PS platform to keep their books and shareholders happy because of how badly XS consoles would perform and how much Xbox gamers do not buy games... Wouldn't you have thought I was a troll at best or crazy at worst?

And yet... here we are. And people like you still don't get it. Still don't see that MS will lie and manipulate their way into being a full-on third-party publisher because that's the best way they make money over a 3-5 year period. Business as usual indeed.

No. But the instant you say 'you can get Xbox games on Playstation' you fucking murder the Xbox in cold blood.

It's selling badly now. It'll go well under Wii U numbers if they have zero 'exclusives' for it.

I thought Don Mattrick FU’d MS big time, but this is getting embarrassing and exciting at the same time. If MS didn’t buy Sony in any way or form, they are in a big trouble with their fan base loyalty

My predictions for next week:

- They will announce the Xbox Series X redesign, digital only. Also the new controller.
- They will talk about how convenient a digital console is, because of gamepass and the cloud
- They will announce a few games for PS5. They will say that Xbox is for the gamers and everyone should play together.

That's it. There won't be any soap opera or anything. However, it will implied that their business model will begin shifting to be more software focused. If they went third party it would happen until next-gen, definitely not now. They are not dropping from the race early.

IMO, If more high profile first party games do get announced for PS5 (like Halo or Gears), I believe they will do it the exact same way Sony is releasing their games on PC.

As an owner of all three current consoles, if Microsoft goes third party, or at least partially third party (temporary exclusives), I can't say I like the idea of Sony being left without direct competition. They were already behaving like asshats this gen.

Some may be too young to remember, but the late PS3 and early PS4 era was the best time to be a PlayStation user, and that was thanks to strong competition. Shit, there was a time when we had 12 games in rotation on PS Plus and Sony randomly deciding to send you an email with 10 bucks of PSN credit every other week. Look at how things are now.

Anyway, fuck Microsoft. With very few exceptions, like Hi-Fi Rush, they haven't released anything good in ages, but I really hope someone else steps up to give Sony a run for their money.

They should make Phil publicly apologize for the failure of X-box and put his face on the console box like they did with Hidekazu Yukawa on Dreamcast boxes.

The cognitive dissonance and double-thinking on display among certain personalities within the industry sure is someting to behold

Funny how you say you own the 3 consoles, but are "worried" only about lack of competition for Sony.

Is Nintendo not competition?

If yes, your premise dies right there. If no, then why aren't you worried about Nintendo themselves having no competition?

Go ahead and square that circle without being obviously biased...

edit: I think you might be the one that is too young, as I think most would argue the PS1 / PS2 were the golden age of Playstation, with the PS2 becoming the highest selling console of all time.

Just popped into my head with everything going on and somehow it felt relevant. Anyone else remember how during the Xbox 360 days there was Microsoft 1st party IP released on PC and DS? I remember this happening but nobody seemed to think this was indicative of anything (and as history shows, it wasn't). Actually it's super strange in hindsight, Rare had a team that made several DS games, including Diddy Kong Racing DS. An exclusive game on a rival device using their 1st party IP. Pretty sure a bunch of other 360 first party games made it to PC too at the time, I definitely bought the PC version of Fable 3 whenever that was.

Obviously EVERYTHING going to another platform is different, but on the topic of opening Pandora's Box, that happened long ago in 2008 with Viva Piñata and again with Ori and The Blind Forest on Switch in 2019.

Things seem really crazy right now, but I'm just bringing this up to say that there is still a possibility that things aren't about to be as radical as everyone is acting like. But I guess either way, we should have a better idea next week.

I hope after this, no matter how long it takes for these loonies...that everyone truly understands its a plastic box with some parts inside that plays video games.

Just, buy the games you want, where you want, buy the plastic you want but don't be emotionally attached to that plastic or the company behind it.

I kinda hope they palm it off to asus or msi or whoever and I may get my dream of buying a 1000 dollar xbox os themed steam machine type box I can plug into my telly.

Just need MS to sort the os out and the apk to make my games run.

But man. Being this crazy over people being able to play games wherever they want is wild.

Nintendo has been doing their own thing for a while now, so no, I don't consider it direct competition.
I've been gaming for quite some time now, mate. My first console was an Atari 800XL, which I still own. But if you want to call me biased, that's up to you, I guess. 😅
