This is my favourite bit.

"In the meantime, as an alternative to spending £55bn on Activision, Microsoft could set up a live stream into Smith’s office and charge people to watch his tantrums. They could make millions from that sort of entertainment."

Windows is still the dominant player.

Apple share is due to rise of content creators and college students. It has a good service quality for people in that age group.

But the rest of the world still uses windows due to most softwares being optimized for windows. From work place to schools to gaming. And its also cheap to get compared to apple ones.
Market share wise across all devices? Android is much bigger & if you really want to include everything Linux actually dwarfs Windows.

And Apple OSs are actually very close to Windows if you combine them, in May:

Android: 34.78
Windows: 29.28
Apple: 25.87

But if you really really want to count everything let me tell you, Linux is the king:

MS pussy'd out on the anti UK rhetoric..

Love to see commentators daring to challenge Microsoft on their bullshit. It's an awesome opinion article.

On another note, watch people grasp on this as if there was something wrong with it:

PC and mobile are different market.
Apple pc os isnt even close to windows OS. Its a complete domination.

Operating systems market share of desktop PCs 2013-2023, by month

Published by
Petroc Taylor,
Feb 27, 2023
Microsoft Windows was the dominant desktop operating system (OS) worldwide as of January 2023, with a share of just over 74 percent. Apple’s Mac operating system has gained market share over the years, albeit remaining a minor player in the desktop OS market. Linux, the third most popular desktop OS, has a small but stable share of the market.

Different versions of Microsoft Windows

From its initial release in 1985, Microsoft Windows has gone through endless mutations. Notable versions include Windows 95, Windows XP, and Windows 7. Windows 10 is the newest addition to the family, being able to run on PCs, tablets and embedded devices. In 2022, approximately 65 million PCs were shipped with Windows operating systems installed.

Apple’s Mac operating system

Having an equally long history, Apple’s Mac operating system (macOS, previously Mac OS X and OS X) also went through different releases. The most recent version, macOS Ventura, is the nineteenth release of macOS. A older version of macOS, Catalina, is currently the most popular macOS, now run on 81.7 percent of the Apple computers as of December 2021. macOS runs on Apple’s Mac computers, including the MacBook, which is Apple’s laptop PC product including the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air, and the iMac – Apple’s desktop computer.

Yeah android may be a huge part of today's global OS market, the fact is that if you want to work or play some games, you've gotta use a PC with Windows. Mac OS may be more significant these days, t's not really relevant since Apple doesn't sell their OS separately for any PC. So if you build your own machine or buy a prebuilt computer or laptop from some store, you'll use windows at a moment or another. A Linux distro is an alternative but you'll end up using wine/proton for this and that in the end. So yes I count wine as "having to use Windows".

What I'm trying to tell is even if Windows is a little bit less significant (and I insist on "a little bit less") these days in market shares because of Android and Mac OS. It's still there as that OS you have to use at a moment or another if you want to do everything with your computer. The day desktop Linux (not android) is significant enough so that most consumers applications are natively available for it, then we can stop talking about MS having a monopoly over consumer PC OS.

Dial back your persecution complex over corporations that don't know you exist. They will be okay.
Remember this handy rule: If it's shitting on the deal, Microsoft, ABK or people supporting any of the prior; It's funny.

If a joke is made from Microsoft, ABK or people supporting the deal; It's not funny. How dare you find anything those people say funny!

Different market or not it's still a OS and competes for users.

Many people who used PCs no longer use them after Smartphones arrived.

In fact Windows ONLY has 1.3 Billion active users vs Android 3 Billion plus.

It's a bloodbath.

No, if a joke isn't funny then that's all there is to it. And Lulu's joke about the Canadian wildfires (a real issue as Jemm Jemm pointed out) wasn't even concerning the ABK deal.

Did you find her "joke" funny?

from the ec there is still no document regarding their approval? only the one released on May 15th in which there is practically nothing written? It seems absurd to me that many take it out on the CMA which, at each appointment, has released full-bodied documents every time which gave substance to their motivations, while the European Commission has not yet explained what studies they did and what led them approval. not that I expected anything from the current ce, but it's embarrassing to work like this

Conme on that is kinda funny that they have a giant 'Welcome to Hell New York' sign up just as the city is clogged with smoke and has a red haze over the sky.

Yeah, hilarious.

The CMA is being gang banged on but they are the most professional regulator. I hope they are allowed to their jobs.

Yeah, hilarious.
Someone else made the joke, which was funny, she just responded to it in a slightly less funny manner because thr joke was funnier without any commentary. But yeah you can joke about serious issues and have it be funny, in fact that used to be the best type of comedy until the perpetually 'offended' people like you showed up - although the joke is about the unfortunate timing of an ad campaign and the wildfires, not the wildfires themselves.

I did. The tweet image had "Welcome to Hell New York" advertisement for Diablo 4 in what literally looks like the atmosphere of hell.

That advertisement in that atmosphere in and of itself is pretty funny because it's really bad optics for Diablo 4. No one is seriously going to associate Diablo 4 with the wildfires, but I imagine a CCO's job would be to address bad PR.

The joke is "I shouldn't have to say this, but for the dummies who would blame Diablo 4 for the wildfires: <insert PR spiel here>"

First, I'm not affected by the wildfires so no reason for me to be personally offended and you shouldn't make that assumption. Second, how are you going to say her joke wasn't about the wildfires themselves when she referenced the Canadian wildfires directly. I think I would be more on board with what you are saying if she was talking the timing and circumstances of the ad, but she wasn't.

Edit: I will say that I didn't see the original tweet only Lulu's. Perhaps the joke would have landed better for me if I had seen it first. So you may have a point there.

I get what she was trying to do, but I just don't think she is good at comedy. She is better at memes.

ehhh, it was definitely dark humor and I’d say better than her usual posts during the acquisition

I live in Richmond where, while it’s not as bad as NYC, we’re definitely getting effected from the wild fires (air quality yesterday was at 170 & labeled ‘unhealthy’ and was actually worse than D.C. or Baltimore at the time though not nearly as bad as NYC’s 340 ‘hazardous’ level)

Phone: Calls
PC: Work

Cant make it any simpler.

Its like comparing mobile market to pc/console market.

We are not in the 90's any more. And mobile includes tablets.
People have given up on PC's to move on to those devices and not only at home.
An Operative System is an operative system, if you want to start separating based on product category you will see that macOS has about a 100% market share when it comes to Mac Computers.
