Russia begins Invasion of Ukraine

THE HAGUE (AP) — The International Criminal Court said Friday it has issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin for war crimes because of his alleged involvement in abductions of children from Ukraine.

The court said in a statement that Putin “is allegedly responsible for the war crime of unlawful deportation of population (children) and that of unlawful transfer of population (children) from occupied areas of Ukraine to the Russian Federation.”

It also issued a warrant Friday for the arrest of Maria Alekseyevna Lvova-Belova, the Commissioner for Children’s Rights in the Office of the President of the Russian Federation, on similar allegations.

The court’s president, Piotr Hofmanski, said in a video statement that while the ICC’s judges have issued the warrants, it will be up to the international community to enforce them. The court has no police force of its own to enforce warrants.

“The ICC is doing its part of work as a court of law. The judges issued arrest warrants. The execution depends on international cooperation.”

A possible trial of any Russians at the ICC remains a long way off, as Moscow does recognize the court’s jurisdiction — a position reaffirmed earlier this week by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov — and does not extradite its nationals .

a little story, In world war 2 , General Auschinlick performed as well as he could against Rommel, but the British people wanted answers for why Africa wasn't going as hoped, well the bad guy is really good at his job doesn't fly so Auschinlick was removed even though he was an effective commander, secrets are kept
unfortunately, morale, strategy, tactics, secrets, everything is complicated, the more open the country the more vulnerable to the realities of war.
and the Ukrainians are the good guys in the conflict with, but Ukraine has plenty of problems /corruption / regional strafe of its own after the war is over things are likely to still be a mess there.
the other thing is the reality of Crimea, Crimea was pretty pro-Russia before 2014, part of the reason conquest was fairly easy in 2014, and has just been stocked with Russians since, plus taking militarily speaking, taking Crimea will be a nightmare as from the Ukrainian side its basically an island fortress. At the same time leaving Crimea under Russian control is a major long term security issue. There isn't really a good outcome with Crimea, hopefully in the mean time Ukraine focuses on kicking Russia out of every other inch of the country, Putin will die (the mind numbing loyalty to him tells me that somehow he isn't finished when Ukraine wins, and as long as he's there the threat of war reamains) and someone less terrible replaces him

Do they though? Putin's inner most circle is composed of nationalists and possibly ultranationalists. They don't give a shit. Plus, Russia doesn't acknowledge the ICC. At most it severely limits his foreign refuge options. If anything they'll likely spin this to fit their "the west is evil" narrative they're pushing.

Besides, this news will barely reach anyone in Russia since the regime have the media on a tight leash. The first thing that has to get knocked down are the state sponsored propaganda channels. Until then, most of the Russian population will be none the wiser.

Like the most recent law the Russian goblin has just instated:

He's going all in on silencing the Russian population on every possible angle.

ICC ruling doesn't mean much in the short term. It doesn't have a say in Russia, just like it doesn't have a say in the USA. When it will become important is when Russia decides to rejoin the world and seek something from a country that does have ICC oversight, or a partner of a country that does.

But for as long as Russia and its partners want to pretend they can go their own way it's just some PR and not much else.

Russians still appealing to the Czar for help.

Spoiler: Putin does not give a shit about all you mobiks, even the ones from the big cities. Until you turn your guns on the Russian government you will keep being sent into the meatgrinder and your pleas for someone else to be sent will be all that is left of you.

Well this ruling limits his travel options, given that the ICC's 123 member states must arrest him and turn him over, if he is found lurking and oozing his way within their borders. The ICC haven't finished yet with their list of charges, and most likely will also indict Putin's ministers and associates as well.

Jesus Christ... My mind just can't wrap itself around this, it's the 21st century and Russia is conducting a war using waves of bodies, can you imagine Russia going up against Nato, it would be utterly horrific for Russia if NATO jets and missiles got involved

Yep, it was next level stupidity and recklessness for them to mess with that Reaper drone earlier in the week. Should take a page out of Turkey's books and shoot those Russian fuckers out of the sky.

High-ranking NATO general: Russian spring offensive is dead

A high-ranking NATO general downplays fears of a major Russian offensive, according to German Bild. The conclusion is that nothing more will come of the plans.
- This is the Russian spring offensive. This is what it looks like. This is all there is.
According to the general, one reason why the offensive has stopped is that Russia's ammunition and equipment are running out at the same time as Ukrainian forces are being reinforced. According to Focus, the same source says that the Russian losses in mantal are also significantly higher than the Ukrainian ones.

They simply haven't a clue how to conduct a war at this scale against a capable adversary, the shitshow that is the Russian command structure doesn't allow for modern warfare on such a large front, they have no combined arms ability whatsoever with everyone seemingly doing their own thing.

I mean surely their must be high level meetings where they have admitted defeat and know they cannot win nor sustain this war, the west just keeps pumping more and more arms into Ukraine and they all know it, yet they keep at it and when their weapons factories deliver a few more missiles they simply launch them at cities for no strategic value, it's all so fucking useless and an utter waste.

I could care two fucks about Russians, seemingly they hate themselves even more that the rest of the world hates them but someone has to tell Putin that they are fucking up the country and in the long run destroying not only their demographics but any chance of recovery from this.

To be a fly on the wall in those meetings...

Member states have ignored ICC arrest warrants before. It's not like there is any punishment for doing so.

Not the first time i've heard this kind of thing now. Its pretty anxiety inducing just how much relies on this single offensive. Putin's strategy of just waiting out the west until their support fizzles out is becoming a more increasingly likely outcome.

Czech contributions are low to begin with. The US can maintain its military support indefinitely. The UK will likely follow US example. Sending weapons designed to fight Russia to be shot at Russia is a bargain.

Nobody knows what would happen if the republicans win the US election though.

It's very important for Ukraine to get themselves in the best possible position before that.

Republicans love defense spending. Selling/giving weapons to Ukraine creates American jobs and makes it easier to green light new spending as stockpiles of older equipment dry up. MAGA republicans lack the numbers to override bipartisan legislation since the Democratic party is already going to support the continued support. I wouldn't worry too much.
