That's a daft reason. What would be "unsmooth" about requiring a connection for coop when you decide to play coop?

It's more likely that this isn't really a single player first game but a GaaS with some shop/mtx element which requires it. A bit like how people were advertising SoT being played solo but it's really a GaaS.

One of the main things I like about Xbox is backwards compatibility and the longevity of their older games. These servers will be shut down in 10 years and then the game is unplayable. So not only would this matter in 2023, it will matter even more in 2033.

In 10 years time MS will do a remaster and it be on Gamepass. There's far more important stuff to worry about ...

I actually didn't care much about this kind stuff until I went to play hitman 3 the other week and couldn't because the servers were shitting the bed.

It didn't affect me for most of my thousands of hours played of Hitman 1 and 2 but when it did it was extremely infuriating, I'd be doing a really good start to a run on Professional and lose the server connection just before making my mid run save or once even during an Elusive Target which was extremely g... rubbish.

I still fail to understand why companies would purposely burden themselves with having to maintain a server by forcing online requirements when playing single player modes in games. I mean, I guess on PC it could be used as a form of DRM against piracy, but why is it necessary on consoles? They already got your money for buying the game, so why burden themselves any further?

For data collection purposes. They want information on how you interact with the game, when you're playing, etc. Some people cry about DRM as the reason and I guess it could be to some degree. But they really want more information about you that they learn from how you interact with the software you use.

Yes, I don't like the playable characters. I don't like their ethnic race, their facial structure, or their personality. I just can't relate to them, it feels off. If this game had some type of character customization where I can create a character that represents how I want them to be, then I tend to enjoy it more like most Action RPGs like Elden Ring, Fallout, and Elder Scrolls titles. Because I don't like the characters, it's not appealing to me. So I don't want to bother even trying out the game, even if it's available on GamePass.

Not to mention that the anticonsumer of always being online for single-player campaign is offputting.

Yes, but co-op is the design philosophy that permeates throughout the entire game. That's why the initial CG trailer and subsequent gameplay trailers all show the group of characters working together using their powers and abilities in different combinations. If you play solo, you will definitely be missing out on a lot of gameplay elements.

Paying for online does suck, but not required for single player games that require internet connection. Well for Xbox at least. Don't know about PlayStation.

Xbox LIve is only required to play multiplayer, with the exception of F2P games. Those can play multiplayer without xbox live.
